So, here's the deal: I'm on the hunt for a new HDD. Ideally, I want something that’s as quiet as possible without sacrificing speed—so we're talking 7200 RPM minimum and at least 1TB of storage capacity.

I've been doing some digging online, and I keep seeing people swear by the Samsung Spinpoint F3 series. What do you guys think? What would you suggest for a budget somewhere in the ballpark of $500-$233?

Also, I'm a bit confused about the different Samsung lineups. Does anyone know what the actual practical difference is between their Caviar Black, Eco Green, and other variations?

P.S. Honestly, I’m pretty much done with Seagate for good. This is the second time one of their drives has crapped out on me, and I'm just not interested in taking that risk again.

The window has closed on that deal. If you haven't pulled the trigger yet, you’re better off holding out. Those floods in Thailand have completely wrecked the supply chain, and now HDD prices are spiking like they're premium citrus fruit at a high-end grocery store.

I’m planning to pick up a drive in about a week—specifically a Western Digital Black SATA3, 750GB, 7200rpm with 64mb cache; it’s got stellar reviews, and I'll be looking at $166 over at Best Buy. Honestly, they botched their shipping logistics recently, and now the price has jumped to $283. That’s a 70% hike in just three days; I could probably find something three times better for that kind of money. Everything else has become overpriced too. You can't find anything decent anywhere—it's like Micro Center, Newegg, or even local shops like Staples or Office Depot have just vanished into thin air. Everywhere you look, it's just empty shelves.
