Back in 2005, a young French director and writer named Géla Babluani shot his debut feature, "13 Tzameti," on a shoestring budget. It’s a thriller about a guy who accidentally stumbles into a lethal game of Russian roulette played by twelve others. The movie shot to cult status in France almost overnight, picking up awards and nods like Best Director and Best Debut at the Cannes Film Festival 2005, plus the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival 2006. It also made decent money; against a $10,805 investment, it pulled in about $795,223 worldwide.
Since American producers love jumping on foreign remakes immediately—just look at how they turned "Let the Right One In" into "Let Me In"—they decided to grab this one too.
The twist here is that the original director, Géla Babluani, is actually helming the remake. Makes sense why he’d take the gig. Not only does it give his low-budget original more eyes, but it gives him a massive budget and a heavy-hitting cast to tell the story even better. Speaking of the cast, it's actually stacked. You've got a third of the crew from The Expendables, including Mickey Rourke, David Zayas, and Jason Statham, who finally gets a chance to act instead of just being an action hero or a tough guy, like he did in The Bank Job. Then there's Ray Winston, Michael Shannon, Riley, Alexander Skarsgård, Ben Gazzara, Natasha Lyonne, and 50 cent. Ray Liotta was originally tied to the project, but he dropped out for reasons nobody really knows.
The film hit the States on March 13th at the South by Southwest Film Festival, but we're still waiting on a wide release date. It's hitting theaters in Russia on October 28th, and they've already dropped the only available trailer. It’s in Russian, unfortunately, but it looks pretty interesting regardless. Early reviews are mostly positive, so let's hope for the best when it finally hits our shores...

Anthony Smith3 said:Nah, what makes this remake slightly different is that the director of the original and this version is the same guy, Géla Babluani.

hehe, kind of like Haneke. 🙂

Well, damn, I certainly didn't see that coming. 😁

I mean, honestly, not many people get the chance to head to Hollywood to remake their own movie.

Anyway, the latest flick from Baltasar Kormákur is also hitting the rental shelves. 😉

And he sold out too, along with everything else. 😬

Honestly... I hadn't even heard of the original until recently, and I bet most people have no clue it exists. So why not just do a remake? It would bring the story to a much wider audience.🤷

At the end of the day... how bad can things actually get when the same guy is handling both the script and the directing? From what I can tell, the only real difference is just the production value and the acting.

Shame on you, have you seriously never seen 13 Tzameti? 🙂

And here I was, actually thinking about sending over that Story Coverage today. Now I think I'll pass—go watch the film first. 😁

Which leads me to wonder... why not just do a remake? It would be a simple way to bring both the soul of the original and its story to a much wider audience.🤷

Have you even bothered to watch Tzameti?

The reality is that this is a small film, and frankly, that’s exactly how it ought to be. It isn't as if the US or the rest of the world is gasping for air because this story hasn't been told yet; the narrative doesn't claim to be anything more profound than it actually is. There is nothing revolutionary happening here. It simply looks beautiful and carries a heavy, palpable atmosphere, which—in my estimation—is precisely what makes it a good piece of cinema.

I’m not particularly fond of the idea of a remake. My assumption is that it won't offer anything fresh or meaningful to the table. If anyone else's impressions happen to prove me wrong, perhaps I'll give it a look. Otherwise, I think I'll pass.

It’s a bit of a double-edged sword, isn't it? On one hand, I suppose there's some satisfaction in seeing a truly talented individual finally get handed a much larger budget to work with. It's a rare thing to see genuine skill met with that kind of financial backing. On the other hand, it’s frankly a shame that all that capital is being funneled into nothing more than a remake. A waste of potential, really.

Look, it's a small film, and that’s exactly how it should stay. It’s not like the US or the rest of the world can't function without this story; the plot isn't some life-altering epic. There's nothing revolutionary here—it just looks great and has a killer atmosphere, which is why it works.

I'm not feeling this remake idea because I'm guessing it won't bring anything new to the table. If everyone else starts raving about it, maybe I'll give it a shot. Otherwise, nah.

Glad a talented guy finally got the chance to work with a bigger budget, but it sucks that the money is being dumped into a remake.

Based on my comment about hearing about the original recently, you could probably assume I haven't seen it yet... though I plan to.😉

Actually, because it's such a niche film, a remake might actually do it some good. It’s not like remaking Let the Right One In, Oldboy, or Funny Games, where basically everyone knows those movies already. Hardly anyone knows 13 Tzameti. I bet only a handful of people have even heard of it.😉
So... it would be interesting if everyone who hasn't heard of it or seen it spoke up here.
👍Just for the sake of statistics...🙂

Na Last thing I watched was back in 2009.They basically sang his praises over there.

By the way, I really can't get on board with the idea that this movie doesn't have a "bigger story to tell." Maybe it isn't some grand epic, but it works perfectly as a metaphor for capitalism and consumerism. Honestly, the small percentage of Americans who actually possess a shred of awareness are probably just going to end up flocking to that remake anyway.

Nah, I wasn't really paying attention to who was watching. L'héritage I can't seem to track down anything by Géla Babluani anywhere. It’s becoming a real struggle to actually get my hands on one of his films. 😢

Anthony Smith3 said:That’s exactly why a remake would actually serve it well—given how small-scale the original production was.😉

No, this will do more for that director's reputation than it will for the film itself.
Do you honestly believe the majority of people will bother with the original after they’ve seen the remake? I highly doubt it.

It would be quite interesting if everyone who hasn't heard of the movie, or simply hasn't sat down to watch it yet, would actually bother to weigh in here.👍 Just purely for the sake of the statistics...🙂

I suppose I have to agree... heh... If my memory serves me correctly, the name has surfaced on this forum about ten different times now. Of course, those who only ever bother with the latest summer blockbusters wouldn't have heard a word about him, but I suppose that’s to be expected.

Not really, unless they manage to snag an Oscar nomination—and even then, the turnout would be pathetic, since basically nobody in the States actually sat down to watch that Tanovich movie. But hey, if you want to grab everyone's attention instantly, just spit right in their faces. In other words, this remake's subject matter hits home for Americans big time.

goldenhound32 said:Nah, the remake will be good for the director's career, not necessarily the movie itself.
I seriously doubt most people will even bother watching the original once they've seen the remake.

Isn't that pretty much how it works?🤷

goldenhound32 said:Fair point... heh... if I recall correctly, he's been brought up on this forum about ten times now. Obviously, people who only watch big Hollywood blockbusters haven't heard of him, but that's expected.

Exactly what I'm getting at. Audiences embrace whatever hits the mainstream... doesn't matter if it's a massive blockbuster or not. If a movie blows up and gets all the hype—like "Let the Right One In" or this new "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" which is also being remade, by the way—then everyone knows it. But with 13 Tzamets, that definitely wasn't the case.🤷 Barem I think that's the case...

You’re absolutely right. I didn't catch the trailer beforehand. Honestly, when I was watching it, I was completely lost—had no clue what was even happening. The movie doesn't really lay things out clearly from the jump. I'm actually glad I avoided the trailer; it saved me from being spoiled.
