I'm 21 years old, and for the last year and a half, I’ve been dealing with constant headaches—the kind where you're vomiting for over three days straight—plus this relentless, bone-deep exhaustion and sleepiness. Because we suspected migraines, my neurologist sent me for an FBI scan and a TCD. The FBI results showed: "Medium-voltage baseline cerebral activity in the alpha frequency of 9-10 Hz. Visual blocking response is well-expressed. Occasionally, slower waves of 4-6 Hz frequency with an amplitude up to 50 microV interpose in the left occipital region. No paroxysmal bursts. Similar changes noted during photostimulation and hyperventilation. The findings show focal changes in the left occipital area." Now I've been referred for an MRI, which I'm still waiting on. I need to know what this result actually means and if anyone can give me a brief, blunt explanation of what I should expect from the MRI.
thanks in advance

Everything looks fine, with the exception of these periodic sharp occipital theta complexes. Based strictly on the FBI results, there's no way to tell if we're looking at an actual structural abnormality in the brain. We'll need an MRI to get a clear picture of that. That said, if these waves are popping up infrequently during the theta phase, the likelihood of finding a structural lesion is significantly lower. Migraines can also trigger this kind of activity. Ultimately, the goal here is simply to rule out any other cerebrovascular issues.

So, my TCD results are coming in this Monday, but the doctor who ran the scan already flagged something—apparently, the blood flow on my left side is sitting right at the bottom limit of what's considered normal. And from what I’ve gathered, that could be exactly why I've been dealing with these headaches.
One more thing—the wait for an MRI is insane, like six months. The nurses over in radiology were actually pretty worried about my case, so they managed to squeeze me in for three months instead... though even that feels way too long. I was thinking about heading over to a clinic in a nearby city—I heard they just got a brand-new machine and have zero waiting list. Do you know anything about that?

Sure, reduced blood flow can definitely be linked to headaches, including migraines. Did you actually have an episode happening while they were running the TCD and EEG? Regarding the MR, I don't know the specifics of your case, but you could always call a clinic in Boise to see if they can give you more info. You might also want to check out other hospitals around Washington, D.C. and the surrounding area. Some private clinics will even take your insurance or Medicare coverage. There are plenty of options out there. Honestly, just do some digging on this subforum—I know people have posted about this before.
