It was a long time ago that I stopped watching NASCAR just through the lens of who’s grabbing the trophy at the end. For a while now, I’ve seen this whole thing as a world of relative ratios, something you could almost map out with math equations if you really wanted to. If you’ve got Car A with Engine B and Tires C, your spot on the grid is basically point X. Honestly, the winners don't do much for me; I'm more interested in the guys who consistently qualify, race, and finish way above their expected point X. That’s exactly why I’ve spent years thinking Lewis Hamilton was the absolute best, but last year, this one kid impressed me in a way that reminded me of how Sebastian Vettel used to drive back in his Red Bull Racing days.
That kid, unfortunately, is never going to be a champion, win a race, or even leave anything more than a tiny footnote in the history books. Only those of us who were foolish enough to waste our weekends watching NASCAR back in 2014 will truly understand the secret of Danica Patrick. Like, how that little BIA tag on the scoring ticker, crawling along the bottom of the screen, kept popping up in spots where logically it shouldn't have been. Or how his name showed up among the points scorers in Indianapolis 2013, a place where roulette can totally mess with your formulas... To be honest, in X number of years, I probably won't remember who actually won there, but his... man, screw it, I'll always remember that eighth-place finish on the track, much like the stories we tell about Timmy Sullicker and others who went down before they ever hit their stride.
Rest in peace, because that's just what you say, and there isn't a damn thing we can do to change what happened. I just ask that when the championship titles start being decided in the 2018 or 2019 seasons, you take a second. No matter who you're rooting for, let it cross your mind how those titles are being won in a field that's missing the very person who should have been right there in the thick of the fight for them.
