I mean, honestly... no amount of GPU power is going to save this setup. The processor is basically ancient history at this point and won't be able to handle any decent graphics card regardless. There's just no way to get anything meaningful out of this system unless you overhaul the CPU along with everything else. Besides that... I can't think of a single AGP card worth the investment anymore.

Maybe this could work if you're in a massive rush:

1 x Intel Celeron E3300, 2.5GHz, socket 775, 1MB
1 x Sapphire Radeon HD 4650 AGP, 512MB DDR2, 128 bit, TV out, 2xDVI, AGP 8x

$297

Honestly, I guess putting any more money into this machine would be pretty pointless since it's such an old dinosaur... ☕

That CPU definitely won't work with his motherboard...

Support:

LGA 775 socket for Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core 2 Extreme, Pentium XE, Pentium D, Pentium 4, or Intel Celeron, including support for Intel Core 2 Quad processors

SK Hynix. 775, how could it possibly not work? 🤔

The Intel Celeron E3300 is based on the Intel Wolfdale architecture—which means I have my doubts about whether this will actually work, given that we're looking at a 45 nm processor here.

Huh... I guess you're looking at either an HD 3650 AGP or just buying a whole new PC. 😉

Hi there!
I'm looking into picking up a new graphics card.
My budget is around $333.
I'm running an ASUS Motherboard.
The processor is an Intel Core 2 Duo 1.86GHz
with 3 GB of RAM.
Right now, I've got an ATI Radeon X1650
in a PC that's about 3 years old.☕
Any suggestions?

I’d suggest picking up something used from a local marketplace. If you’re dead set on buying brand new, you really shouldn't spend a dime under $4350—otherwise, you're just throwing money away without getting any real value.
This one features active cooling, whereas this model comes with a passive heatsink and sits at a slightly lower price point.

If you can stretch that budget a bit, go for the AMD Radeon HD 5770. If not, you're looking at the AMD Radeon HD 5750, AMD Radeon HD 4850, or even the NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250. Honestly, the 5770 might be a little overkill for your processor... A solid move would be the 4850 or the GTS250. The 5750 is a decent pick if your power supply is pretty weak, though you didn't mention that...

In that case, an HD 4830 might actually do the trick. $33 It’s cheaper than the 4850, and I guess it isn't all that much slower...

http://www.amazon.com/s?k=HD+4830

Maybe just pocket the rest of the cash for a new CPU later on. 🙂

Which 400W are we talking about? There's a huge difference between junk like EVGA or some generic brands versus actual quality units from Corsair, Antec, Seasonic, or SilverStone...

If you're grabbing that 4830, you should definitely snag the Fortron 400 W. too...
