We can't work like this. 🙂

Open up the PC and take a photo of the power supply—specifically the sticker with all the specs. Use http://imageshack.us/ to upload the image here.

Also, what monitor are you running, and what's its native resolution?

We need to know what kind of power supply you're running; there's no point in guessing without that info. Also, let me know your monitor's resolution.

You’re going to need a card with at least 1GB of DDR5 memory, so look for a GTX 460—specifically this one: http://www.newegg.com/p/details/po...7063?service=1

Regarding the power supply, does it actually list a brand or a model on it?

If you end up needing a new PSU too, go with this: http://www.newegg.com/p/details/na...9945?service=1

Alright folks, I'm heading out today to pick up a new graphics card at Micro Center... quick question for the group—which one of these is going to be more of a power hog? I'm looking at the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 768MB versus the Sapphire AMD Radeon HD 5770. My current PSU is a Thermaltake MaxPower 420W, so I need to know if I'm walking into a potential meltdown here.

The power supply isn't exactly top-tier, but it’s decent enough to handle your rig...

As for the actual power draw, you can check here.

AMD Radeon HD 4800

Is this thing actually any good? Also, does anyone have a clue what I should be looking to pay for a used one these days?

Which exact model? The 4850, 4870, or 4890?

All three are fine, but it depends on the rest of your rig. What are we looking at for the CPU, PSU, motherboard, and monitor resolution?

All three are solid choices, really—it just depends on what else you're running in your rig. What kind of CPU are we talking about? How’s the power supply, the motherboard, and your monitor setup? Resolution plays a huge role here, too.

You're forgetting about the 4830 😉

It’s actually pretty tough to pin down an exact value, since there are basically a million different iterations out there—different cooler designs, PCB revisions, factory overclocked versions, varying amounts of memory... plus, of course, you never know how much the previous owner pushed the card through overclocking or just generally beat up on it.

Hey there.
I’ll be honest, I don't really know the first thing about graphics cards, so I’m looking for some advice here. I want to pick up a new GPU because, at this point, I can't even run a single game properly with the one I'm currently using.

The budget I have to work with: $267 I might be willing to shell out up to $900 if I could actually find something truly worth the money.

The rest of the PC specs:
Graphics Card: NVIDIA 8400GS 512MB DDR2
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5200+ 2.70GHz
Memory capacity: 2GB.
Motherboard.🙂Board: ECS GeForce7050M-M 1.0
Bus Clock: 200 MHz
BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. 080014 05/26/2008

I hope I’ve provided enough detail here for someone to recommend a solid graphics card that fits within the budget I mentioned above. I appreciate you taking the time to help me out. Thanks! 🙂

To be fair, the processor is pretty decent 😉

http://www.newegg.com/p/product_info.php?c...oducts_id=9150

Or maybe go used? You could save some cash and get something slightly more powerful than the new one above:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/graphics-card-listing-1957213

Just let me know what kind of power supply you're running. What’s the brand and wattage? I guess some cheap, off-brand units might struggle to handle an AMD Radeon HD 4800 😛

How am I supposed to check that? Sorry, I honestly don't know anything about hardware...🤷

Go ahead and pop the side panel off the case—just be careful with those screws—so you can get a clear look at the label on the power supply unit.
