I've been searching online, but I'm having a bit of trouble finding a PCI USB card. All I can seem to find are the portable ones, nothing for a standard desktop PC... does anyone have a recommendation?

Let's say:

Where do you actually need it?

That’s me. I need an upgrade for my desktop PC; it’s been running for over seven years now. So far, the deals I've seen have been pretty underwhelming. I tried looking through Best Buy, but I couldn't find anything worthwhile.

I'm running into a bit of a snag here. I am trying to transfer a 1.2 GB folder onto an 8 GB SanDisk Cruzer Nano, and it is taking about four minutes to finish. If I'm using a USB 2.0 port, shouldn't that process be significantly faster?

Not necessarily. I think it’s fine.

I spent some time looking up drive speeds online, and everything seems standard. I am curious about how external hard drives will perform, though. Should we expect to hit those maximum transfer speeds when using them?

I suppose so.
I've tested quite a few external hard drives, and they all seem to hit the same speed limits.
To be honest, I haven't really come across any flash drive, hard drive, or other storage device that actually manages to max out USB 2.0 speeds before.

I wasn't expecting top speeds, but it certainly got close enough for me..
