Which PSU should I buy?

I don't think there's much to debate when it comes to Corsair, especially if you can snag a brand new unit at that price point.

I ended up pulling the trigger on a Corsair unit. The build quality is seriously impressive—it feels solid, it's fully modular, carries a bronze certification, and delivers 620W of power. It comes with a 5-year warranty, too, and arrived brand new and sealed for $167. Thanks again for all the advice. I think I’ve finally managed to wrap my head around the basics of power supplies.

Hey there,
I'm looking for some advice on which power supply to pick up for an Intel Core i5-8400 paired with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti, specifically something I can find at Micro Center. Ideally, I’d love something fully modular, or at least semi-modular if possible. My budget goes up to $233 but honestly, if it isn't necessary, I don't feel the need to drop the full 🙂

Or maybe this one:

- The TT version offers better efficiency, a Zero RPM mode up to about 200W, and a warranty that lasts two years longer.

Actually, I’d say the CX is just a slightly more rugged version of the Corsair Vengeance, maybe with a bit more build quality.

👍
Haven't really seen them much in the local stores.

So, does this power supply actually live up to its price tag?
I really dig the fact that it features a slightly larger fan, the full modularity, and that Gold efficiency rating.

Yeah, it’s a solid choice. You'll likely get about $33 10 years of reliable service out of it, even with semi-passive cooling

Hey there,
A while back, I built a rig using some advice from this group + about a year later, Timothy Kim60 gave me some tips on picking out a newer GPU.
I’ve recently swapped in some used parts, so here is my current setup:
Intel Core i7 4790 @ 3.20GHz
16.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 933MHz (10-11-10-30)
ASUS Z97X-Gaming GT (SOCKET 0)
DELL U2311H (1920x1080@59Hz)
2048MB AMD Radeon R9 200 Series (MSI)
1 x 640 GB HDD
2 x 240 GB SSD
My power supply is still that old Corsair CX Series CMPSU-400CXEU, and since the fan bearing finally gave up the ghost, the noise is starting to drive me absolutely insane.
The main thing is that I need it to be quiet. The old one was decent enough, so I don't need anything groundbreakingly silent, just... not this.🙂 .
What PSU would you guys recommend? Keep in mind I'm planning to upgrade my graphics card toward the end of this year or early next with some kind of "quiet" best-buy option (and yes, I'll be coming back to this crew for advice when that happens).
Thanks in advance for the help, and all the best! 👍

What’s your budget looking like?
You can find be Quiet! power supplies pretty cheap these days—they're decent enough—but if you've got more to spend, the options really open up.

Thanks a ton, that's right at the edge of my budget, so I'm heading out to grab it today.

no worries
it's a solid PSU

A buddy of mine is upgrading his rig from an AMD Phenom 840 to a Ryzen, most likely the 1600. He's running a 260X, and while the power supply is decent, it's a pretty old XFX 450 W.
Regarding the Ryzen, it should pull less power than the Phenom, but I'm wondering how reliable an XFX unit actually is after 7 or 8 years of constant use? Especially when you're thinking about hooking up brand new hardware worth a couple thousand bucks to it. 🤔
EDIT: Posted this in the wrong thread. 🤦 Mods, feel free to move this over to the PSU buying discussion.

There really isn't any reason to go through the trouble of swapping it out if the power supply is functioning perfectly fine.
#2017 ·
So I’m running a Ryzen 5 1600 paired with a GTX 1660 6GB on an EVGA 450 W. that I picked up way back in 2012. I actually used it for mining for a few months (running at 300W 24/7), and honestly, it hasn't even flinched. If it's working, I guess just don't touch it. 🙂
#2018 ·
Since the load isn't even approaching its peak, we aren't looking at a power supply that would drag your components down with it; rather, it would simply trigger a preventive shutdown before any damage could occur.
#2019 ·
That’s exactly what I thought at first, too. But the guy seemed a little skeptical, which honestly made me second-guess things unnecessarily. The bottom line is, even if it fails, it won't take anything else down with it.
This is what I was looking for 👍

Hey everyone,
The PSU in Zen's rig just died on me—so now I'm stuck hunting for a replacement on Craigslist, maybe at Micro Center, or wherever else I can snag a decent deal...
It’s running an i5 and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980...
What's the bare minimum wattage I need to pull this off? I want to spend as little as possible, but I'd also prefer it doesn't crap out on them in a year.
Any specific best buys out there? It needs to have 2x8 pin connectors for the GPU and 1x8 pin for the motherboard...
thanks
