yeah, I was just digging through the manufacturer's site—they're recommending at least 600W...

thanks for the link...

edit: alright, ordered it...

Intel Core i5-2400 (95W TDP)
8GB DDR3
Radeon 5770 Vapor (max 118W)
ASUS P8B75-M
2HDDs, 1SSD, 1CD/DVD drive
My power supply is some random "SL-500" with a gray sticker on it. It's been running fine for months, but I noticed the air coming out of the PSU is scorching hot, unlike the air coming from my case fans which stays pretty cool.

Should I be worried about this before summer hits?

Something like this?

Looks like some cheap unit.
The fact that it's blowing hot air—especially if it's a budget model with low efficiency that generates extra heat—isn't surprising.
Your setup isn't exactly high-end or brand new, so I wouldn't stress too much.
However, if you're planning on upgrading soon or keeping this rig for the long haul, investing in a decent power supply makes sense. It’ll last longer, give you peace of mind, and actually save you some money on electricity. (If this thing is 75% efficient and a better one is 85%, you're saving 10% on power, which adds up over a year).

So, my take? No immediate rush, but having a better PSU isn't a bad idea.

Either way, make sure it's clean—no dust buildup.
Blow it out with a hair dryer or a vacuum (after you've unplugged the PC and hit the power button once to drain the juice).
Or ideally, use compressed air, though that costs a bit more upfront.

For maybe $133, you can grab a much better unit.

Yeah, it's the same company, it's just that I have the 1st Edition while the one on your link is the 2nd Edition, and they both have a power output of 500W.
I'm pretty religious about cleaning my PC heatsinks and fans—even the PSU—but I never really paid much attention to the exhaust temperatures before. With this power supply, though, it’s constantly running hot even when it's just idling, and since everything has been working fine for a long time, I kind of just got complacent. 🤔
As soon as I get a chance to snag something better, I'm swapping it out just to be safe. Plus, I'll finally be able to ditch those annoying Molex-to-6pin adapters for my GPU and the Molex-to-SATA ones too.

Man, that's just an "office" grade power supply. The actual 12V rail output is probably way lower than advertised.

If you can stretch your budget a bit, go modular. You can pull the cables you don't need (though you'll still end up needing most of them).

Quality-wise, it’s right in the same ballpark as the previous one.

Oof, $167 that's honestly way too much for that power supply. If it were me, I'd probably go with something like this:

It’s not actually that much cheaper. That Corsair unit is $464 at Micron and comes with a 5-year warranty.
If you're really trying to cut corners, I'd look at Hex instead—they also offer 5 years. Besides, with power supplies that don't have many cables anyway, modularity doesn't even provide that much of a benefit.

Not even close $167 when it comes to the Corsair CX series, especially if we're talking about a 450W unit. That's a hard pass for me. 😁

If you're already looking at spending nearly $167 and you actually want modularity, then this is the way to go.

If you're already going to skimp $167 and want modularity, then go with this instead.

That (relatively) new CX series is fine—it has a 5-year warranty.

What you linked has 5 years, but the older ones didn't.

Personally, I’d just grab the Hex 85+ for $133 and call it a day.

Is the older generation Corsair HX 520 actually any good? 🙂

Looking for a power supply for an Intel i5 6500 + AMD RX580 build. Here's the catch—I'm buying on credit, and since I'm based in Cleveland and want to skip the shipping fees, Intel seems to be my only real option. Since financing is limited to payments via $167, I've been scanning $167 to find the best value.

I see this 650W modular Antec NeoECO for $183, or any of these be Quiet! System Power 9 units for about the same at $183.

I'm not sure how the financing situation looks at other local shops in Cleveland (like Corsair or HP), but their selection for this budget range feels pretty lackluster compared to what's here. Any thoughts?

That be Quiet! Power 9 is solid; you won't go wrong with Antec in general.

Personally, I'd look at the be Quiet! Pure Power 11 500W Gold. You also have the Seasonic Forza 750W Gold for $166; you could probably bundle it with $167 like a mousepad or something.

I just checked out the selection over at Intel-Corsair-HP, and they don't have any limits on installment plans. But looking at their stock, all they really have is that weak Corsair VS, MS Platinum, and Fortron Hyper M 500W stuff. I almost pulled the trigger on the Fortron today, but $177 it's just way too much for what you actually get.

Now I'm thinking about grabbing an LC Super Silent 550W (LC6550) from Intel plus a case like an MS Fighter, which brings me to about $183. Honestly, I don't mind that price point since I'd end up paying just as much for similar quality power supplies at Intel-Corsair-HP.

By the way, the case everything is currently sitting in is one of those old HP workstations we talked about in THIS thread. So, swapping out the case isn't a bad idea either.

I could order something and wait a few days through Intel-Corsair-HP—maybe a Fortron Hyper K for less than $133, which seems like a great value—but I really don't feel like waiting. And I can't justify spending extra cash because I already blew $233 this month on this used RX580.

So many options, such a dilemma 🤔

Honestly, what is going on with the power supply market lately? I picked up an EVGA 450 W. for $107, and let me tell you, that thing is built like a tank. It’s solid. But looking at what's available right now? It’s honestly pretty depressing. -.- The only decent option I've seen is the Fortron Hyper 600W, but that'll set you back $200. Everything else listed here just seems like cheap MS junk or those bottom-of-the-barrel Corsair units. -.-

If you're looking at New York City, say, Future has a pretty solid selection. Meanwhile, Cleveland is kind of stuck in a rut with its limited options from Intel-Corsair-HP...

If I were picking from this list, I’d probably narrow my focus down to either the top-tier Fortron Hyper or the Corsair CXM, depending on how much cash I was willing to shell out. To be honest, the rest of these options just don't really grab me. XD

Alright, I’m settling this dilemma today. It basically comes down to this: I can grab the LC Super Silent 550W at Intel PLUS some cheap case just to get $167 over it. Or OR I go with the Fortron Hyper M 500W for $177 over at Corsair.

Comparing these three power supplies? I can't find anything concrete on the LC one, and honestly, people mostly just trash it 🤷

Is a Fortron Hyper overkill for $200? I spotted one somewhere for about $200, so...

For the $177 setup, I'd go with the Fortron Hyper M, but it feels a bit overkill to me. I'm not entirely sure how it stacks up against that Antec or the LC model, aside from the obvious modularity advantage—which isn't really a huge deal for my needs anyway.
