Yeah, people use all sorts of random adapters and makeshift setups. One guy's PC fires up on the first try while someone else's won't even budge.
Yeah, 2x molex will handle that load just fine. No issues there.

It didn't even cross my mind that this was about mining—even though I mine myself. I honestly thought it was some kind of rendering setup or something. The power supply choice and that 150W figure just didn't add up to me. A GTX1070 with proper tuning pulls about 100W when you're mining.

Thanks so much for all the helpful replies! So, I'm thinking maybe something like this would probably work just fine, don't you think?

Yeah, they should be fine, I guess.

Hey there, fellow forum members.
My Fortron Raider 750W power supply just bit the dust on me.
My current setup is running an FX8320, an xfx 280, and 8GB of RAM.
I was actually planning on upgrading later this year to a Ryzen 3600, an RX5700, and 16GB of RAM, but honestly, with prices being absolutely sky-high right now, that’s looking like a pretty expensive endeavor.
I'm willing to shell out about 500 bucks—$200I am also totally open to suggestions from eBay or other local classified sites (anywhere in the Chicago area works for me).
Thanks in advance for the help.

If you aren't overclocking, this should be fine and gives you a solid PSU for the future upgrade. Otherwise, you'd have to settle for something lower quality just to get more Watts.

The Corsair 550 w TX550M is 80 plus Gold rated. It goes for about $95, but you get a modular design and solid reliability out of it.

Hey everyone, I'm looking to pick up a new power supply for my rig. Since my budget is a bit tight right now ($133), I've decided to hunt for something used—provided it hits at least 600W. I've put together a list of the units I've come across that look decent to me, so if anyone could help me narrow this down to a top 5, I'd really appreciate it.

Riotoro 600 w Builder edition
Kolink Classic Power 700 w bronze
EVGA 600BQ bronze
EVGA 600BR bronze
EVGA 650 G3 Gold
Seasonic S12II 620 w bronze
Zalman ZM700-GV
Zalman ZM700-LX
Zalman ZM700-TX
FSP Hyper 600
FSP Hydro 700
Corsair CS750M
Corsair GS600
Corsair CX600 bronze
Enermax ELT620AWT

In case you need my current specs:
Gigabyte GA-X48-DS5
Intel Core 2 quad Q9650
Gigabyte GTX 660
Corsair XMS2 DHX DDR2 2 x2GB
Black Series DDR2 F2-6400CL4D-4GBPI-B 2 x2GB

Thanks!

I'd honestly rather just go with a new 500W unit. Why on earth do you think you need 600W?

My plan is to build a PC that I can actually upgrade down the road without having to rip out the power supply all over again... so I want enough headroom to breathe. That's why I'm looking at a minimum of 600W.

Depends on what you're planning. If you aren't sure, or if you think you'll jump to a new platform with beefier cards like an RTX3070 or better, then 600W is a smart move. Otherwise, 500W does the job.

But honestly, the real issue is that finding all those specific power supplies you listed can be a struggle here in $133.

The EVGA 650 G3 Gold, FSP Hydro, Hyper, CX600, and Seasonic S12 are all decent units, but you really need to look into their warranty coverage and stuff...

While the EVGA 650 G3 Gold, FSP Hydro, Hyper, CX600, or the Seasonic S12 are all solid units, you really need to factor in whether they still carry a warranty and things like that...

Since these are all used, the price point fits perfectly within my budget. Whether they come with a warranty or not doesn't change much for me at this stage. Either way, thanks so much for the advice! 🙂

Does anyone happen to know where I can pick up a single PCIe 6 + 2 PIN cable for a GPU? It absolutely has to be compatible with my Seasonic Focus plus 1000 w, 80 PLUS Gold, SSR-1000FX. I've been scouring every corner of the web and haven't found anything besides eBay listings from overseas sellers who take two months to ship, and even then, there's no guarantee it'll actually show up at my door... 🤦 🙄

I wonder why a power supply like this wouldn't come with adequate PCIe cables? What kind of specific setup would even require that extra cable? I actually picked this up from Best Buy because I thought I might need an additional 2-pin connector, though my GTX 1060 didn't really demand it since the built-in 6-pin was enough. It turns out it’s actually coming in handy now that I'm testing out a borrowed BlackRock card (which uses an 8+6 configuration), because it refuses to boot unless every single pin is connected. That said, isn't a 500W power supply a bit too weak for a card like that? It's strange, because it really should be pulling less power than the GTX 1060.

Is it just me, or does anyone actually know how to "mod" these things? Specifically, can I turn an 8-pin CPU cable into a 6+2 for a GPU? Or maybe just a 6-pin to power a riser? From what I've gathered, they both pull from the same 12V rail, right?
If I want to run 2 or 3 different power supplies for my mining rig, I'll have these extra P8 cables just sitting there. They’re modular units, so finding extra cables is basically impossible—you can't just grab them anywhere. I picked up a Gigabyte unit and didn't come with any spares. Google it. People usually end up bugging the manufacturer directly.
Whatever! For now, it seems like my best bet, though even then, I'm still short on enough outputs.

Option two is just taking one 1200W unit and splitting it into two. There are pros and cons to both, obviously.

So, if anyone has any insight, let me hear it.

P.S. No need to lecture me about polarity or whatever—I'm an electrician. A total Bandera!

It’s pretty obvious you're a total amateur when you start talking about "12V phases"🤣

From what I can see, they've got plenty on AliExpress—those guys over there really know how to markup stuff. Just search for an EPS to PCIe adapter

My bad—I put "phase" in quotes.

Ran into that cable yesterday while hunting for something else (fake connectors and stuff, since I prefer DIYing my own cables). Now, as soon as I type EPS into the search bar, everything I’ve ever looked for pops up at once. 👍
