What exactly do I need to look at to choose a PSU?

Well, you really need to know which CPU you're running—but more importantly, which GPU is in the build. Those two components are, by far, the heaviest hitters when it comes to power draw.

I'm currently running an NVIDIA GeForce, but I’m looking to pick up a new card—pretty sure it was an AMD Sapphire with 512 MB on an AGP slot.
The CPU is an Intel Pentium 4 at 2.80 GHz.
I've got 1.5GB of RAM.
Motherboard is an ASUS motherboard.
Any idea how much a power supply like that would set me back?

That should be plenty for your setup.

It’s not even really necessary, honestly—Chicony HPD4802RWR2 is more than enough for a setup like that (plus, the power supply is actually decent quality)

Does anyone actually make one of these power supplies with detachable cables for the stuff I don't need?

Actually, those modular power supplies tend to run quite a bit more expensive—honestly, they often cost more than the entire computer itself is worth.

I saw that Best Buy has a deal going on for a Scythe Stronger modular power supply, 500 W—honestly, I’m pretty sure it’s about as cheap as you can get without actually buying junk.

Could I get a little help from anyone who knows their stuff?

So, my power supply finally gave up the ghost...
I was wondering what you guys would recommend for this specific setup?

processor ( Intel Core 2 duo E6400 box, 2x2.13GHz, 1066MHz, 775-pin, 2MB)
motherboard ( MB Gigabyte 965P-DS4, s775, i965, DDR II , SATA II RAID, FW, GLAN)
memory ( DDR2 1GB PC6400 (800 MHz) ,Kingmax)
power supply ( Power Supply FORTRON BlueStorm 500W, HQ, PFC, 2x12V, 12cm fan)
graphics card ( sapphire radeon HD 5550, 512 MB)

Also—does anyone know of a decent repair shop (maybe somewhere around Chicago?) that won't absolutely rip me off? You know, a place where they actually charge for their labor rather than just trying to squeeze every penny out of you? I’d love to take it somewhere professional because, honestly, I don't really trust myself to do this... I've never swapped out a power supply before, and I'm always worried about messing something up. Is it dangerous to try it alone??

Thanks so much in advance!!

This should be more than enough for you—just give them a call and ask, though I’m pretty sure they’ll slide it right in without any drama. It’s not exactly rocket science, honestly; you just have to plug two connectors into the motherboard, and then you've got the optical drive and the hard drive(s) to hook up. The graphics card doesn't even need extra power. You'll get an instruction manual with pictures, but you can always just wing it based on how your old power supply was set up, assuming you haven't already ripped it out of the rig.

Hey guys. Got a bit of a situation with a PC power supply. It’s some old PDS ATX-500 unit. My network card fried, which ended up taking my motherboard down with it—totally toast, no fixing that mess. I pulled the PSU out of the rig and now I'm wondering: is there any way to jumpstart this thing to get some juice out of it? Are those yellow wires the +12V lines? I’ve got this 150W amp lying around that runs on 12V, and since I don't have a dedicated power brick for it, I was thinking about just hacking it up to the computer PSU. Cheers, thanks.

So, I'm looking to put together a new rig, and I figured I'd come on here to see if anyone could point me toward a decent power supply that won't blow up given these specs

AMD Phenom ii X6 1090 T, Socket AM3, 3.2GHz
Gigabyte GA-880GA-UD3H Radeon
Radeon hd 6850
Corsair RAM 8GB, DDR3, (2x4GB), 1600MHz
Seagate Barracuda, 1TB, SATA, 7200rpm, 32MB cache, 3.5", SATA3

Thanks in advance, guys 👍

How much cash are you actually planning to drop on a power supply? If it were me, I'd be looking at something like this:

You can pick up an OCZ PSU Fatal1ty 550W on MagazinRS. It's SLI-Ready, features Active PFC, provides 12V/50A, and is modular for $159.

I mean, honestly, how much would it even take? Give me a ballpark figure here. $167
Honestly, Seasonic seems like a pretty solid bet to me. I think I’ll sit on it for a little bit longer and chew on the idea before I pull the trigger. Appreciate everyone weighing in with their thoughts!

And honestly, if you actually bother to look through those local grocery stores—I mean, really check the shelves—Walmart isn't always 100% accurate anyway. Personally, I haven't seen them listed in any of their current stock.
