What's the deal with this "EVGA 450 W1" power supply? Anyone here actually used one? 🙂

Looking at the specs, this thing seems pretty underwhelming—we're talking 70% efficiency, just one PCIe cable, two SATA connectors, and a combined amperage on the 12V rail that's honestly pathetic... if you're seeing this for a bargain price, it’s almost certainly junk.

😲 Oh, please—don't even go there. An ASUS unit costs about a third less, and honestly, it’s the better build anyway.

That Corsair unit was just leftover stock from some old business deals, so I'm just checking. I guess that means I should probably just stick with my current "Corsair CX550". 🙂

I mean, if everything is actually running fine, just leave it alone... based on the specs from that link you shared, that power supply isn't exactly anything special—I'll give you that it costs $83, but this thing... 😲 From what I can see, it’s going for about $100 out there, which is alright, but keep in mind the model itself is basically four years old at this point. Just toss it in the garage for a rainy day. 🙂

As the title suggests, I’m looking for a power supply rated up to $100. In terms of wattage, 300W should be plenty.

I suspect this is actually a Fortran unit—maybe someone could confirm if I've got that right?🙂

Honestly, Spire is just garbage...

If you want my advice, stick with what crimsonstag84 suggested—it’s basically just a rebranded Fortran unit, which is actually a pretty solid power supply 🙂

Which Best Buy power supply would be a solid choice to run an HD 4870 1GB?

I have a feeling my current 400W Codegen unit isn't going to cut it.

Don't even think about trying to run that codegen on a 400W unit...

It really depends on your CPU and how much you're overclocking, but I'd look at something like a Corsair VX450, an XFX 550W, a Seasonic 520W, or maybe a Chieftec 550W...

I’m planning to pick up a power supply—likely one from Chieftec or a similar brand—along with a GPU just to get me through the summer. Once autumn rolls around, I’ll be building a completely new rig and transplanting both the card and the PSU into the new setup.

Thanks for the input.

Not really... honestly, it’s pretty overpriced for what you actually get. 😛

This one seems like a better bet:

Honestly, if I’m dropping that kind of cash, I’d much rather just pick up a Scythe stronger 500W instead—it's fully modular, built like a tank, and comes with a solid three-year warranty.

....can you please, just for the love of everything, explain to me what "modular" actually means? Thanks! 😁

A picture is worth a thousand words, right?

Modular means detachable cables. You only plug in what you actually need and stash the rest away so they aren't cluttering up your case..
