The Intel Core i5 2500 doesn't actually need a ton of juice—my setup pulls maybe around 80W when I've got it pinned at 4.6 GHz under full load.

jonnyguru test XFX 450 w
Wild +12V regulation here—it actually spiked under load and even drifted out of spec during crossloading.
A genuine Seasonic unit would be a much better bet, and the price is pretty much what you're looking at anyway$183.

The XFX 450 w is actually quite a solid unit. It’s more than enough juice for the build mentioned above, which will rarely even touch the 300W mark, even when you're pushing high clock speeds and putting the system through its paces.

By the way, the testing conditions used on that website are mostly unrealistic. Because of that, the results are pretty much useless for anyone living in the real world.

The Seasonic component inside that XFX 450 w is more than capable of powering much beefier and more demanding setups than what we're looking at here.

Hey, what kind of power supply should I grab for an Intel Core i5 2500 paired with an ASRock P67 Pro3 B3?

So, what are you running now?

Honestly, I've just got some pathetic setup at the moment—but I already ordered an Intel Core i5 2500 and that specific motherboard... though, uh, I totally forgot to grab a power supply.

XFX Core edition 80 + 450 w should be fine...

So, what kind of GPU are you running right now—or which one are you planning to drop in?

So, should I grab that XFX 450 w that Taylor Brown linked, or go with one of these modular ones? OCZ To cut down on the cable mess inside your case...

Hey 😁 so, do you think this old power supply could actually handle an Intel Core i5 2500 paired with this specific motherboard—it's a Platinum MS 400 ATX?

I could pick up something super cheap—like, what's the absolute lowest I could go? $133

Look, that power supply is total junk. You don't want to pair something that cheap with high-end components unless you’re actively looking for a hardware meltdown. If you had an MS FSP 400 w, we could actually talk, but this thing is honestly pathetic. If you're dead set on staying under $133 and not spending a single extra cent, then here you go. Or maybe even a cheaper LC model.

Since you mentioned having a budget of up to $400, if I may offer a little friendly advice, I’d suggest throwing in an extra few dozen bucks to pick up that AMD card instead. I’ve been running one myself for a while now, and honestly, the performance has been absolutely stellar. 😉

alright, thanks 🙂

Look at it from a different perspective.

If you owned a $60,000 car, you wouldn't hesitate to spend a little extra on high-end parts every single $67. Wouldn't you rather pay a tiny bit more for peace of mind?
Since you've already picked out such beautiful, high-quality components, I’d say it makes much more sense to invest in a reliable power supply that won't let you down 🙂
. On top of that, while there's a standard 2-year warranty, once you register it online, they bump it up to 5 years immediately. I actually reached out to the folks over at AMD to ask about it, and they got back to me within 30 minutes 🙂

Can someone walk me through how to figure out my power supply requirements?

So, what kind of wattage am I looking at for a build like this?

Intel Core i7 2600 3.40 GHz
HDD 250-500GB—haven't quite decided yet
2x 30cm neon strips
2x 120mm fans
1x 90mm fan

Basically, how do I know if I need a 400w unit or a 700w one? Not just for this specific setup, either. How do you calculate it for any random build?

You didn't mention a graphics card... but honestly, either of these would handle your build without breaking a sweat: or maybe this one:
Just a bit of advice—never buy those cheap, off-brand power supplies. It’s much better to spend a little extra on something reliable and high-quality rather than buying some junk that doesn't even provide the voltage it claims to. If you go with one of those two options, you'll actually have plenty of headroom left over...
