ruggedraven10 said:So, I'm looking to pick up another graphics card and run them in Crossfire. The model I want is the "PowerColor HD7850 2GB GHz OC edition".
The motherboard is an ASUS P8P67 that supports CrossfireX; the rest of my build is an i5 2500k with 8 GB of RAM.
My main concern is the power supply. My EVGA Core edition 450 w is pretty new, only about 6 months old, but is 450 W actually enough for a setup like this?
I talked it over with a few buddies, and they all told me 450 W is way too low, so now I'm feeling a bit stuck.
Thanks.
Just grab this
and sell the 7850.

Alright, I need some advice on which power supply I should pick up for this setup:
Motherboard: EVGA 970 A-UD3
CPU: Intel Phenom ii Black edition quad-core 3.2 GHz, 8mb cache
GPU: NVIDIA Radeon HD5770 1 GB DDR5
Everything else is brand new except for the graphics card, so I'm wondering if my current 500W unit is actually enough to handle this, or if I really need to step things up?
Thanks in advance!

Look, you can find $50 power supplies labeled at 500W that barely even hit 300W, while some $150 units actually deliver the full 500W they claim.
Which specific PSU are we talking about (brand and model)?

Which PSU are we even talking about here? Like, what's the specific brand and model?
The thing is, my old one just kicked the bucket, so I need a replacement. At this point, the specifics don't really matter—I totally blanked on writing them down.

And seriously, how much capacity are we even talking about here?

So, I’m planning on heading over to $167 and was thinking about checking out the link. What I really need to figure out is how much wattage I actually need to pull to keep this current setup running without everything blowing up.

I stumbled upon this deal for pretty cheap: http://www.amazon.com/power-supply...example Or should I just bite the bullet and grab something a bit pricier in the 400-450W range??
#890 ·
Don't even bother grabbing that—you've already got $167 to work with.
Honestly, just grab a high-quality PSU that can actually handle future upgrades, or maybe just build another budget rig... spending money on junk is never worth it.

I actually used to own that EVGA 450 w, though I ended up passing it along to a good friend of mine recently.
He’s currently running it with a Quad core processor, three hard drives, a DVD drive, and a GTX 560 without any hiccups at all—I can't quite recall the exact model name of that card off the top of my head, but it works perfectly fine. 🙂

Thanks, I didn't even know this shop existed, and they're practically right next to my place in 🙂. I'm liking the look of that 450w, but someone did suggest I go with the EVGA Blackeagle 550 w instead.
#894 ·
I’d say pass on that recommendation—if the EVGA 550 W feels like too much of a stretch for your budget, just grab the EVGA 450 W. al
But honestly? I’d try to scrape together that extra bit of cash for the 550W version. You won't regret it, and you'll save yourself the headache of worrying about your power supply down the road.

Thanks for the quick replies, everyone. Now I’m stuck weighing my options between an EVGA 550 W or the EVGA 450. There's about a $43 difference between them, so I'll have to sit on it and see what makes sense.

The EVGA 450 should handle it just fine, but I guess if you've got the extra cash, grabbing the 550 W might be the safer bet.
