What kind of PSU should I pick up for my MSI 780 Hawk?
http://images.tweaktown.com/content/...ard_review.png

Idle: 246W
Load: 470W

Do you think a 450W unit would be enough?

Technically, 450W might cut it, but it really depends on the quality of the unit you're looking at. What specific model are you thinking about using?

I haven't pulled the trigger yet; I was leaning towards either the
Corsair 430 or
Silverstone strider 500 w (though I know that one isn't quite as efficient)

Go ahead and grab the Strider ST50F; it’ll handle the job without breaking a sweat.

You could actually go with this one too...

Got one MSI H77MA-G43 on hand. It's a Socket 1155 setup. Runs a Sandy Bridge chip. Uses an Intel H77 chipset. That's it.
One Intel Core i5-3470 3.2GHz processor. It hits a max turbo frequency of 3.6 GHz. Has 6MB of cache. That's it.
One stick of DDR3 8GB (configured as 2x4GB) Corsair Vengeance Low Profile Blue, 1600MHz.
One Western Digital 1TB Caviar Blue hard drive. Model 10EZEX. It’s a 3.5-inch SATA3 drive with 64 MB of cache. Comes with a 24-month warranty. Simple enough.
Got one MSI GTX 660 Ti 2GB GDDR5 192 bit. It’s the N660Ti PE 2GD5/OC model, specifically the PE version. Just stating the facts.
One XFX Core edition 80+ 550W PSU—comes with that EasyRail tech.
One LG GH24NS DVD burner. It's a DVD±RW drive. You get 24x speeds for DVD±R, 8x for DL, and 40x for CD-R. Simple enough.

Is this power supply actually up to the task for this build?

What kind of power supply can I pick up—doesn't matter if it's brand new or used—in the 400-450W range? I need one that actually delivers what it says on the box; I'm not looking for some cheap unit that claims 400W but actually bottoms out at 350. My budget is around $100-$50...

Maybe some old Fortron 350W or 400W unit, or an older Chieftec, I guess...

Maybe hunt down a used Fortron if you can—you aren't finding anything brand new at that price point.

Alright, if anyone can give me a quick answer, I’d appreciate it—a buddy of mine is putting together a new rig (which is basically my new setup for some gaming sessions) and he’s wondering if he can just reuse his current power supply to beef up the graphics card by grabbing a better one. Thanks in advance!

What kind of power supply are we talking about here?

The PSU is a Seasonic model: SS-430HB Active PFC F3

He’s also running an Intel Core i5-3350

And the plan is to pair it with this Sapphire graphics card: HD 7850 2GB GHz ed. HDMI, DVI, 2xmD

Motherboard: ASUS P8B75-V

So, for instance, I picked up an MK III silencer—just thinking about how that would stack up in a little comparison, you know?

So, I’m looking at this power supply and honestly, it feels ancient—maybe three or four years old? Someone please tell me if I'm crazy or if it's actually time to ditch it.

It’ll hold up just fine as long as nobody went overboard with overclocking it or paired it with some massive, power-hungry GPU. It puts out 350W on the +12V rail, so it should handle that combo you mentioned without breaking a sweat.

Honestly, if it hasn't been opened up in years, you should probably give it a quick blast with some compressed air just to clear out the dust.

It might be a good idea to give it a quick blast with some compressed air to clear out the dust, assuming nobody’s actually touched it in all these years.

+1

It should hold up just fine, I guess. 😉

So, I've got a bit of a question for you guys. I’ve decided to pick up an HD6850 1GB DDR5 256bit card—honestly, the performance on this thing is solid, especially considering it only pulls about 130W at full tilt. My main concern is whether my current Corsair RM450 power supply can actually handle it. I’ve had some people tell me it'll run just fine, while others are telling me not to even bother unless I upgrade. If I really do need to swap it out, could someone point me toward the most budget-friendly PSU that won't flake out on me? I'm not looking for some high-end, overpriced boutique brand; I just want something reliable that gets the job done. The rest of my build is pretty low-draw: the CPU peaks at around 65W, and I'm just running a single 250 GB hard drive and a DVD-ROM...

Just swap it out. I don't think you really want to risk some junk power supply taking your new GPU down with it.

The thing is, I'm flat broke right now. I barely scraped together enough for the GPU and the RAM, so dropping more cash on a PSU isn't exactly in the cards. If I could find something decent for maybe $100, $40 I might be able to make it work...
