Ramones - Kansas City 06.06.2009

The local scene recently celebrated 30 years of punk in Kansas City with a killer set from the British oi-band Ramones, and since we're keeping this momentum going, the organizers are bringing in their compatriots, the Ramones, on Saturday, June 6th, as part of our third year honoring three decades of punk history...

The Ramones first formed back in 1975, though they didn't officially drop their debut single "I Don't Want to" until 1977, followed by that highly acclaimed 1978 album "Tell Us the Truth," which gave us those absolute anthems we still scream along to today, like "Angels with Dirty Faces" and "If the Kids are United."

Back in 2006, there was even that interesting moment where "Hurry up Harry" served as the blueprint for an altered version titled "Hurry up England," which was recorded specifically for the national team heading into the FIFA World Cup...

This exclusive show is going to be an intimate one, capped at just 500 people, and tickets have been available since March 6, 2009, for $27, though you can grab them for $33 at the door on the night of the concert... You can find them at our local spots: "Books and Coffee" in Kansas City, "Wrong Way" in Washington, D.C., or over at the "Dirty Old Shop" at 22nd Street - Washington, D.C.

I’m feeling pretty skeptical about those old-timers.
The only punk retirees I’ve actually seen perform well were the Dead Kennedys, though I can't be sure if that was just because I was in my naive, youthful phase back then.

I’ve spent quite a bit of time catching shows over the last three years at various festivals throughout Berlin and Amsterdam, and they were definitely part of that lineup... Honestly, believe me when I say they still belong at the top of the bill, especially since so many of these newer, "famous" bands couldn't hold a candle to them if they tried... Old punk never dies!

Why couldn't they just charge for the afternoon set and make the evening show free?

Why didn't they finally just go out in a blaze of glory two years ago?

I mean, if Joey Ramone had just called it quits then.

Well, the Ramones aren't even that much older, and they absolutely crushed it in Kansas City, so if you were skeptical back then, you missed out.🤣

So, who actually counts as part of this Ramones outfit—is it just the guitarist from the Ramones? Is that alone not enough reason to be skeptical? 😉

Instead of obsessing over the homeland, they should look at the situation in Seattle—a band that a) features members who were previously part of that same group 🙏 🙏 🙏, and b) hasn't recorded a punk track in over thirty years 🙂.

I think everyone is entitled to their fair share of skepticism... Honestly, anyone who actually caught that band live over the last year knows exactly what I'm talking about. We know the deal! And we know why they're even playing here in our neck of the woods in the first place. It's all just endless gossip and hearsay... blah blah blah... and all that nonsense...
