IVP (Intravenous Pyelogram) procedure questions

Has anyone here actually gone through that screening yet? Looking at the patient prep instructions, it sounds pretty brutal... 😲

Let me know if you've dealt with this—is it actually painful, how long does the whole thing take, and how much of a nightmare is the wait for the results? Thanks in advance for any info!

The scan itself isn't even that bad, honestly. The only truly "gross" part is having to get poked with a needle just to get that contrast dye injected so they can track everything on the RTG later. Other than that, there’s no pain—just the minor annoyance of having to shimmy around and flip from side to side on the table.
The way you're using "gross" probably refers to all that prep work you have to do at home beforehand. It basically involves flushing out your system with gallons of water and those heavy-duty laxative powders, kind of like prepping for a colonoscopy. If you don't get things sufficiently cleared out, the RTG won't show anything useful, and then the whole thing was just a waste of time.

So, I just got my ultrasound results back and it’s giving me a bit of a headache. It says there’s this hard, hypoechoic mass located up above the uterus, but they couldn't really tell exactly what it was...

What do you guys think this could be? Maybe a kidney cyst or something? Anyway, I’ve got an appointment with an internist next week for a renal ultrasound. The woman—she’s a gynecologist—actually suggested I get an IV urogram, but honestly, that feels way too invasive for me. I don't love the idea of dealing with contrast dye and all that extra stuff if I don't have to. I'd much rather just hear what the internist has to say first.

If anyone has any clues about what this might be, or if you've dealt with something similar, please let me know!

Hey everyone, I just finished an IVP today, so I figured I’d share my experience in case it helps anyone else. I went over to Mayo Clinic, and I had it scheduled a week out. For two days leading up to it, I stuck to clear broths, rice crackers, and tea. The day before, I took two Dulcolax tablets to make sure everything was cleared out. When I got there, the doctor mentioned I should have used the liquid version instead of pills since it works better, and noted I wasn't quite as empty as I thought—but hey, it is what it is.

There was zero wait time, and they brought me right back. The whole thing takes about 30 minutes, and honestly, it wasn't painful or even uncomfortable at all. They just give you the iodine through an IV and take the images. I didn't feel any weird warmth or burning, and my urine color didn't turn anything crazy. I should get the results in a few days; fingers crossed for good news! 🙂

Your stomach is probably just bloated...

The prep is basically just watching what I eat for three days leading up to it.
