I’m getting a bit of sleep... maybe six hours on average, though usually less than that. I've never been great at managing my time. Some days I feel like a total zombie... but I know plenty of people who have lived like this for years, even sleeping less than I do.
Well, the real question is how they do it.

eh, but the real question is how?

It's simple: some people are just hardwired that way, with an organism that demands very little downtime. Ideally, we’d all be able to sleep until our bodies naturally decide they're done, regardless of the clock. At the end of the day, the actual number of hours matters far less than whether you actually feel refreshed and ready to tackle the world when you finally roll out of bed.

well, the real question is: how?

I barely sleep at all. We're talking two hours a night, on average.
Timothy Cox2, why on earth are you trying to settle into a routine of sleep deprivation when you admit you already feel like a complete zombie half the time?

That’s what happens when you stack up several days in a row without enough sleep. Honestly, even if I oversleep, I still don't feel great—it just makes me want to nap even more. For me, catching a few minutes in the afternoon is absolutely vital. Even if it's just a quick 3 or 4-minute power nap, it does the trick. Take Elon Musk, for example—he famously averaged about four hours of sleep, but he always made sure to take those 20-minute naps to stay sharp.

Between 2 and 4 in the afternoon, your body is basically begging for a nap... or at least some downtime to just lounge around if you didn't get enough sleep last night.

I can sleep for 15 hours straight if I want to
if I hit the sack at 3 AM.

But if I crash at 10 PM because I'm totally wiped, my sleep is garbage. I'll wake up at 1, then 2, then 4... once that happens, it's over. I can't get back to sleep. Just tossing and turning in bed... it's hell.

Obviously, if I get up at 6 AM, I should be able to go to bed earlier, but I can't. I’ll just stay awake until 2 or 3 in the morning and then sleep for ages.

My blood pressure is low—not sure if that's a factor, though most people just use that as an excuse.
The thing is, getting out of bed is brutal. I feel dizzy and exhausted all the time.

As for sleep quality, you need to air out the bedroom, keep it pitch black, drink some warm milk before bed... none of that works for me.😬

Elizabeth Ruiz2, how on earth can you sleep through all the noise and chaos when you're out for 15 hours straight? I mean, that’s basically most of your day right there! 😬

It’s not like I’m pulling 15-hour shifts or anything, I just have stuff to do. But on the weekends? I can sleep in whenever I want. I hate going to bed early, but man, getting out of bed in the morning is the worst.

I’m tired all the time. Sometimes I’ll just crash for an hour in the afternoon...

And no, nothing bothers me. I wake up, hear the cars passing by or my mom making lunch, and then I just drift right back to sleep...😍

I can pull 15-hour sleep sessions too
and honestly, nothing really bugs me. Even when my sister-in-law swings by with the kids and they're running around screaming and jumping all over the house, I don't hear a thing
but here's the thing—I can be in the deepest sleep imaginable, yet if someone even steps foot in my room, even if they're walking on their tiptoes... I just always sense when someone else is there. It's like a sixth sense or something

Are you hitting the sack at the same time every night? It sounds like your internal clock might be completely out of whack. What kind of work schedule are we talking about here? Is it poor nutrition? Too much booze? Drugs? Stress?

So, there’s this sleep theory floating around suggesting that if you actually want to feel human, you should be hitting the hay around 10 PM. Apparently, you get that deep, heavy-duty sleep until about 1 AM, and anything after that is just your body starting to drift toward waking up...
It’s kind of like how most of us can't stop eating junk food; most people are basically sleeping like garbage too. 🙂

It is a truly curious phenomenon, isn't it? I find myself caught in this peculiar cycle where, during the work week, I might only manage a meager three hours of sleep before being jolted awake at 6:00 AM by the relentless demands of reality—and yet, quite inexplicably, I function with a sort of heightened, albeit perhaps slightly manic, efficiency. But then, the weekend arrives, and I succumb to the temptation of sleeping until 2:00 or even 3:00 in the afternoon, and suddenly, the universe conspires against me; I emerge from my slumber feeling far more exhausted and utterly depleted than I ever did during those frantic, sleep-deprived weekdays. It is a physiological paradox that defies all logic.😕 Honestly, what am I even supposed to do when my soul truly craves nothing more than the sweet, blissful sanctuary of sleep? It is a profound dilemma, really—this constant tug-of-war between the relentless demands of modern life and that deep, primal urge to simply curl up under the covers and drift away from the chaos of existence. How does one navigate such a conflict? One moment you're staring at a mountain of responsibilities, and the next, the sheer weight of exhaustion hits you like a freight train, leaving you wondering why we even bother staying awake at all.😬

Went to bed at 5 AM because Oscar wouldn't shut up
Woke up at 1 PM
That’s eight hours of sleep

And I still feel absolutely wrecked, like I got hit by a semi... even though I ate plenty of fruit and I'm loading up on Vitamin C and B...😢

I feel like you just described my entire existence. I am such a night owl, it's kind of ridiculous.
I guess I just get my second wind late at night when everything finally settles down. Before noon? Forget about it. I’m basically a walking zombie until I’ve had way too much coffee. Plus, my blood pressure is notoriously low, so getting moving in the morning is always a bit of a struggle.😳

They’ve got all sorts of sleep presets available—everything from heavy-duty stuff for insomnia to settings designed to slam you straight into REM
.
Hell no. I am not taking responsibility for the fallout 🙂

Absolutely not. I won't take responsibility for the fallout. 🙂

People with epilepsy and drug users? Just stop.

I installed it. Honestly, I’ve never heard anything more repulsive or grating in my entire life. 👎

By the way, you can listen through headphones while you sleep, provided you kill the bass entirely.

Some people get used to it, others don't. It’s not an all-or-nothing thing. Just don't blast it—keep the volume down. 😉

I can easily pull a 20-hour sleep marathon if I’m exhausted enough...
I'm such a night owl—I can stay up as late as I want, but it means mornings are a total struggle regardless of when I actually hit the hay. Usually, I find myself thinking about napping the second I get home from work, but then I end up wide awake by the afternoon and can't drift off... it’s just a constant loop where I never actually feel rested.
Anyway, I don't have an answer for the original question, but I honestly admire people who can take those quick fifteen-minute power naps and wake up feeling refreshed. If I close my eyes, I'm out for hours and wake up feeling like a complete zombie...

I spend all day just dreaming about sleep... I can't wait to get home from work and crash for an hour, but it always seems to bug the people around me. They’re usually looking to grab coffee or something, and they know better than to call because I'm out cold... I just worry about how it'll play out in my marriage. This afternoon nap habit? It feels baked into my DNA at this point.

I’m honestly one of those lucky people who can function perfectly fine on very little sleep—I don't even feel the need for long naps during the day! Maybe it’s just a leftover habit from my childhood when I had to drag myself out of bed early every morning for daycare, but it stuck. I guess I'm just wired this way! Personally, I love being able to get by on short bursts of rest. If I actually sleep longer than my usual routine, I immediately start feeling sluggish and totally out of sorts.🙂
