It’s far too much hippie nonsense for my taste, not to mention how mind-numbingly dull and vacuous it actually is...

Vanilla Sky? The Exorcist? Do those even count as cult films?

Betty Blue, David Lynch. It’s not exactly a disaster (mostly thanks to the cast), but I wouldn't go so far as to call it a masterpiece either.

I honestly don't see what all the fuss is about with this movie.

The plot is way too simplistic, there's almost no real complexity... and even Robert De Niro's performance feels pretty middle-of-the-road. I mean, sure, you've got that one "Are you talkin' to me?" scene. If it wasn't for that single moment, I'm not even sure the film would be this iconic.

Top 250 on IMDB? No way...

Just a plain, boring little movie... no real plot, nothing special with the acting...

The whole thing was a disaster.

Sure, if you think a movie is "good" simply because it triggers some kind of visceral reaction, then fine. But there's such a thing as going too far.
I don't think I've ever sat through a film with that much pure negative energy and tension.

So, say what you want.

I fell asleep so easily during this one, and that’s saying something considering I had a little help from some sake-induced sedatives. I was really hoping for something gripping, like the Conspiracy Trilogy.

As for my own picks—Shadow of a Doubt and Under Capricorn stand out as the most atypical Hitchcockian films. During the forties, Alfred Hitchcock tended to lean into more "serious" psychological themes, but here, the suspense and the buildup feel agonizingly slow, almost standard and anemic. The only significant impression left is the atmospheric cinematography, which captures the anxiety and claustrophobia of the suburbs brilliantly—far better than the overly explicit plot or the dynamics of the main characters ever could.

Come to think of it, I pretty much only watch stuff I actually enjoy... which means almost everything mentioned in this thread

haha, the thing is, most kids today just identify with the protagonist, so you'll have to be perfect to disagree😁

And besides, you can't exactly hate on Martin Scorsese; he’s basically the coolest old-school director to ever do it...🙂

I haven't seen Raging Bull, The Deer Hunter was way too heavy for me, I missed Spirited Away, and 2001: A Space Odyssey is just tedious...

A plot? Since when is a complex plot a prerequisite for a decent movie?

The acting? If that wasn't top-tier, then I simply don't know what constitutes great acting anymore.

Look, there is a distinction between objective technicalities of a film and whether or not one actually enjoys it.

Personally, I can't stand The Police.

...hmmm...two things come to mind right now:

"Dirty Harry" — hmmm... I'll give it a shot, but I just can't get into it. And yeah, I get it—the movie is supposed to be much deeper than what's actually on screen—but I just can't get past that dated, black-and-white way of looking at things...

"Gone with the Wind" — I give this one a chance EVERY single year, and yet I never make it past the first fifteen minutes... It’s just incredibly draining and feels totally unconvincing to me. But sure, I'll give it another go this year—who knows, maybe one day it'll actually click. 🙂
