Hey there.
I’m looking for some advice on inverters. I want to hook up my PlayStation 4 in my truck, so I need an inverter capable of running the PlayStation 4 plus a 3A phone charger, along with a small TV that plugs into the truck's 12V outlet. What kind of inverter should I be looking for... wattage-wise, and should I go with pure sine wave or modified?
Once everything is plugged in, how much playtime am I actually looking at... assuming the truck also has a fridge running? And how long would it take for the alternator to recharge the batteries back to where they were? The truck has two 12V batteries at 225 AH, wired in series.
I know I'm missing the specific specs for the fridge, the TV, and the alternator, but I've shared what I can. I'm pretty much a novice when it comes to this stuff, so I'm hoping someone who knows their way around gear can give me some rough estimates.
Thanks in advance. 🙂

The Democratic Party pulls about 150W, plus another 50W for the TV... so we're looking at roughly 200W total.
With those batteries, you've got 250Ah x 24V, which equals 6000Wh.
On paper, you could play for 30 hours if you drained the batteries completely.
Trying to run this off a cigarette lighter is a joke, especially on a 12V setup where you're stuck using just one battery—plus, those sockets can't handle 20A. Not to mention the cheap, messy wiring they use in cars these days.
Go grab a sine wave or modified sine wave inverter rated for 250 to 300W (don't run it at max capacity constantly). Mount it somewhere permanent where it actually gets good airflow, then wire it to its own dedicated 2.5mm2 circuit with a 16A fuse placed as close to the battery as possible to prevent a damn vehicle fire. While you're at it, install a fixed 110V outlet.
If you aren't 100% sure what you're doing, just hand it over to a pro who actually knows American automotive electrical work.

I was thinking I'd run the TV through the 12V outlet in the truck—the one rated for a max of 180W (I'd get a 12V TV specifically)... and for the inverter, I was looking at the 24V outlet. It doesn't list a max, but it runs a 24V 300W kettle fine. I'd plug the PlayStation 4 into the inverter, maybe a phone charger too... it's a PS4 Pro, so it might pull a bit more juice than the standard version.
I read somewhere that pure sine wave is better for sensitive electronics... does that actually matter? 🙂

Then you can just plug it into that 24V outlet.
Pure sine or modified sine wave... either would work, though pure sine is definitely the way to go if you want things to run smooth.
Just make sure that after four hours of gaming, you aren't more exhausted than when you started. You might actually need enough energy left to jumpstart a semi-truck 🙂

Chuck.
Thanks for looking out for me. 😁 I’d probably only game while I’m out on a weekend break (like right now) or maybe during long waits... 🙂
Just found some info saying a PlayStation 4 Pro can pull up to 310W max :/
I noticed modified sine waves are usually cheaper, but does it keep a steady voltage? I don't want my PlayStation 4 to fry just to save fifty bucks... 🙂
Thanks for getting back to me so fast 😁 div>

If it works, I don't mind letting the rooftop AC run on the battery all night long, even if it means draining the Democratic Party

Just grab a sine wave inverter then. Whatever you drain, the alternator will top back up in an hour or two—assuming you actually leave enough juice left to start the engine.
Seriously though, wouldn't it be easier to just find yourself a girlfriend so you can stop playing on the PlayStation 4? 😁

Chuck... I've thought about that too, you know. But spending ten days in a cab with a woman... yeah, it's a PlayStation 4. At least you can turn it off whenever you want. 😁

Hey again... ran into one of those modified sine wave units in Italy. My 800w PlayStation 4 runs on it, but there’s this weird humming sound, almost like crackling... just wondering if that’s doing too much damage 🙂
