Motherboard, RAM, PSU, cooling
CPU is an Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 @ 2.66GHz—got two of them in there
The motherboard is an Asus P5KPL
RAM is 2GB... I think it’s Transcend, there’s some writing on the stick but I can't quite make it out
Power supply is an Antec 500W
Cooling? Pretty sure it’s just the standard Intel stock cooler

With this setup, overclocking is a pipe dream. 😁

It’s perfectly fine to overclock even with stock settings. What kind of CPU temperatures are you seeing right now?

Look, I'll just bite the bullet and grab a new fridge if I really have to—no biggie. It’s just that those programs you sent me in that link... man, they aren't doing much. When I run those load tests, the temp climbs up to 68 after a little while, but once it finally settles down and takes a breather 🙂 it's sitting at 42

68 degrees is pretty hot, and once you start overclocking, you'll probably see them hitting over 80° with that stock cooler. Definitely grab a decent heatsink before you push it, unless you're planning on using your CPU to fry eggs! 😁

You're running pretty hot on that stock setup... might be wise to hold off on the OC until you've picked up at least a Freezer 7 Pro.

The temps are probably spiking because—well, I was actually mid-way through stripping down my cooling setup—and honestly, who knows how much of that thermal paste is even left sitting between the heatsink and the CPU right now...

lol! That’s not grease, it’s thermal paste! 😁 In theory, taking off the heatsink shouldn't really change much.

Are these temps even possible?

image

It used to be totally normal—around 131°F under load. Is it possible I botched the thermal paste application? I doubt it, though, since the GPU isn't acting up. Before this, it would freeze at about 163°F, but now it runs fine, which makes these load temps feel a bit off. But specifically right after swapping the paste? Anyone have an idea what's going on?

Maybe try using an older version of Core Temp to take the measurement

Did you maybe go a bit heavy on the thermal paste, or perhaps the cooler isn't seated quite right?
Give it another shot; I personally went through about ten different iterations of applying and reapplying before I finally nailed the perfect ratio.

For me, running a full load on Prime95 keeps things around 65°C, while Orthofix doesn't even push the temps nearly as high.

Everything looks normal now:

It might still run a couple of degrees warmer than before. Since I just applied fresh thermal paste, that could be why it's sitting a degree or two higher. Also, one of the pins wasn't seated quite right earlier.

I’m not entirely sure if this belongs in this specific sub-forum, but I figured I’d ask anyway and hope someone can provide some clarity. I am currently running two 512MB sticks of Kingmax RAM; however, one is rated at 677MHz while the other sits at 533MHz. Since they weren't purchased as a matched set, I am wondering: if I go into the BIOS and manually force the speed to 677MHz instead of letting it default to 533MHz, will the slower stick actually handle that increase without causing major stability issues or system strain?

man, I feel like there’s barely any paste in those tubes—it’s almost like they're playing games with us. seriously, where do you even find this stuff? and how are you actually supposed to apply it? is there some secret technique or do you just smear it on like you're brushing your teeth? 🙂

So, does anyone here from the Los Angeles area know a decent computer shop they can recommend? I used to hit up a place called Nexus, but those guys totally ripped me off—well, they actually just shut down, so I haven't found a reliable spot since then. Also, I'm looking at some 4-video setups or whatever... I can't even remember the name of that thing you use to attach the cooler, but I'm struggling to get one to fit. I'm wondering if that might be why my temps are hitting the roof lately.

So, I was wondering—which one of these is actually worth grabbing? Between the Cooler Master MasterAir series for socket 775 and the Cooler Master MasterAir series for socket 478, which one do you think performs better?

So I finally hooked up that Jupy thing to the fourth fan slot, and man, what a difference—my temps are sitting at a chill 42 now, whereas they used to spike all the way up to 60 like crazy

Give it a shot. However, I suspect you'll need to bump up the memory voltage, which means you're unnecessarily overvolting the 677MHz stick too, leading to higher heat levels. You might want to consider if it's actually worth the trouble.

Andrew Gonzalez11 said:To be honest, there's hardly any thermal paste left on mine—it's practically non-existent. Where can I even find some, and how are you supposed to apply it? Is there a specific technique, or do you just spread it on like toothpaste?🙂

Just clean off the old stuff with some isopropyl alcohol and then spread a thin layer of the new stuff using a plastic card. You can pick up a tube at any local electronics store or even a pharmacy.
Andrew Gonzalez11 said:Also, does anyone near Los Angeles know a good computer shop? My old local spot used to be Best Buy, but they closed down, and I haven't found a reliable place since. And regarding those pins on the cooler... I can't get one of them to click in properly. Could that be why my temperatures are so high?

OMFG 🤣
Is the push pin snapped, or did you just not rotate it correctly? If you haven't released the tension, it won't snap into place.
Andrew Gonzalez11 said:And which cooler would you recommend: the Cooler Master MasterAir series for socket 775, or the Cooler Master MasterAir series for socket 478?

The Cooler Master MasterAir series. $1.75 It's more expensive than the other option.
Andrew Gonzalez11 said:jupy connected it to that fourth "view" and now my temps have jumped from a steady 42 up to anywhere between 42 and 60

Hey guys, so I was messing around in my BIOS yesterday—mostly because I saw some guy on YouTube overclocking the exact same processor I have—so I tried bumping the frequency up to 400 and... yeah, total disaster. My PC just shut down and wouldn't even attempt to boot back up for a solid hour. When it finally did kick back to life, it gave me that annoying error saying I needed to change my BIOS settings, so I just set everything back to Auto. Now, when I run OCCT and Core Temp
I noticed one of my cores is hitting 98% usage while the other one is just chilling at maybe 15-30%. Why is it doing that? Both of them used to run at 100% all the time before this mess.

Anyway, no worries everyone, it's fixed now.🙂
- So, here's the thing, I've got this ASUS PA010-8LB4W cooler—well, mine has a copper base, that part that actually touches the CPU, you know?

Actually, this isn't even my specific model, it's just a photo of one, but it has a round fan instead of a square one, and those fins are curved, whereas on my ASUS they're totally flat.

I know I'm probably talking a bunch of nonsense here, but bear with me, I'm just venting!

Son, please, stop wasting your time on YouTube and all that nonsense; you’d be much better off heading over to PCMag instead.
