dustypilot23 said:Man, my drive just died on me the other day, and so did my backup 60 GB IBM drive.😁

Thank God I picked up a 200 GB Seagate just last week and moved all my files over.🙂

Well, I wasn't that lucky... everything's gone.😢

I’m just sitting here wondering... how is it even possible? I've got one rig that's twice as powerful on paper, yet Far Cry stutters like crazy... while this other machine—running on half-broken, mismatched memory that barely stays stable—

is absolutely flying... cranking it at VERY HIGH settings with 4x anisotropic filtering!!! Pro 1024x768 resolution too.

I honestly can't wrap my head around it—is AGP really four times more effective than the 6800? It's actually showing some teeth. It makes you wonder... what was even the point of all the "new" stuff?

I honestly can't wrap my head around the idea that AGP is somehow four times stronger, allowing the 6800 to actually show what it can do... it really makes you wonder... why bother upgrading at all?

Look..

I've got this massive 96kb 3D game right here, detail quality is basically old-school VGA level, six different weapons, and you can play it for hours (though you won't beat it in the end 😬 )

that's what we call optimization 😎

Remember what I told you over coffee, Ba? I warned you that drive was on its way out since you were basically the only guy I knew still running an IBM back then.

@ Raymond Rodriguez40

Kate 333 and the 6800 are still kicking. Talk about luck.

That’s what real optimization looks like. 😎

Give me a break. Those guys spent two years grinding out something like *Krieger*. Who even writes code in Assembly anymore? And don't forget, even on my setup with a 9600 modem, a Pentium 2500+ (on your fancy new board), and 2x256 RAM, the thing still stutters and hitches like crazy. Try running it on a low-end rig and then we'll talk about "results."

I'm running a 9600pro with a gig of RAM myself...

I'm pretty sure Far Cry absolutely eats RAM for breakfast, so you can bank on that being a factor.

yeah..

I guess the ASUS thing is actually pretty funny, especially when that lady on the speaker starts going on about how the CPU overclocking failed.. blah blah blah.. 😳 😳

Give me a break. As if some random lady is gonna pop up and say "cpu overc. failed, please..."
I'm the one who got hit with a black screen when I tried bumping those Barton sticks (the non-m ones) to 200 FSB in the BIOS—not some lady. It was driving me absolutely insane, so I just shut the whole thing down. <- as you can see, we’ve got a total pro working the job here.

I mean, I didn't get a polite message, I just got a totally black screen when I tried bumping that Barton (the non-m version) up to 200 FSB in the BIOS, so it wasn't exactly a gentle warning. It pissed me off so much I just ended up pulling the plug. <- so, as you can see, we're dealing with a deluxe model on this job.

heheee

that's all just for show... though it's kind of cool 😁

if you're just creeping up the MHz bit by bit, you probably won't hit a black screen 😁

just one thing though..

did that Barton actually work at 200 on any other motherboard?

It’s a pre-built configuration from Best Buy, so I’m technically not even allowed to crack it open :-((((
strictly speaking ;-)

Question: I've got an Athlon XP 2600+ (1918 MHz) overclocked up to 2700+ (2000 MHz). Should I mess with the core voltage, and what's actually in it for me?

Look, if it's running stable right now, don't touch a damn thing...

If you do start cranking it, you're gonna deal with way more heat, but you'll most likely squeeze out a higher clock speed too...🙂

As far as voltage goes, you can push it up to 1.8V without any real issues.
You can even hit 2.0V if you've got a solid cooler (like a Zalman, for example...)
You could even go as high as 2.2V (just like I did😁), but fair warning: your idle temps are gonna sit around 70 degrees.😁

Stay safe,👋

You might get some higher temps out of it, though, and maybe—most likely—a higher clock speed too...🙂

As far as voltage goes, staying under 1.8 should be totally fine without any issues
up to 2.0 if you've got a decent cooler (like a Zalman, for example...)
You could even push it to 2.2 (kind of like what I did😁), but your idle temps will probably hit 70😁

Živija👋

at 2.2 😲 ..you better be cooling the northbridge too, hopefully even with water cooling😉

So, yeah..
You can bump the voltage up to 1.8 (but I wouldn't go much past that), but with that voltage, you should expect at least 2200 mhz, and just be ready for things to run hotter than usual

Which motherboard are you running again, driftingnomad68?

dustypilot23 said:On 2.2. 😲 I better hope you're cooling that northbridge too, man. Seriously, throw some water cooling on it if you have to. 😉

So...
Don't even think about bumping that voltage up to 1.8V—just don't do it. But if you decide to be reckless and push it that high, expect to see at least 2200 MHz, and get ready for your temps to absolutely skyrocket.

What kind of Setra board are you running again?

Yeah, that 2.2 was just a little experiment to see how far I could push it... and man, she hit 2754 MHz easy.👍

Right now, I’m pushing 243x10 to hit 2430MHz at 1.7V, and I've got a Zalman keeping the Northbridge from melting.🙂

You can hit 1.8 without breaking a sweat, but if you want to push it to 2.0, you’re gonna need some serious cooling under the hood.👍

The plate is an Epox 8k3a kt333

Processor is unlocked, or maybe not...

I've got a heatsink block from a Thermaltake Volcano 7 paired with a fan from a Spire WhisperRock...

Temps are sitting right around 48-52 (maybe 48-55) at the moment

Just bump the voltage up by 0.5-1V and see how much the temps jump.🙂

honestly, I might just crank it to 12V so it can actually clean itself, haha 😁

Honestly, I should just hook it up to a 12V battery and let it wash itself, lol 😁

So, how much should I actually bump it up? There's no way I'd go by just 0.5 or 1 volt, right? 😱

I was thinking about aiming for 2.6v 😂😁

Dammit 😳

My bad, totally messed that one up 😵

Bump it to 1.8v and see if you can push past 2.0 GHz, just keep a damn close eye on the temps 🙂
