Cringey American movie tropes

It’s always been like this... all that cheesy, over-the-top patriotism. But ever since Bush's mess in Iraq kicked off, I’ve become seriously allergic to it. Especially the other night when I sat through *Saving Private Ryan*—all that "dying for my country" and "tell my wife I love her" stuff? I just couldn't stomach it!

I honestly can't stand those people who go, "Ugh, an American movie this, an American movie that... gross, gross..." while they're glued to the screen watching every single one. 🙄

Look, man, just like me and most of the rest of us here, a person just wants to have a little fun tearing these kinds of movies apart. It's a simple pleasure, really, but you actually have to sit through the film to enjoy it properly.

I haven't had a chance to sit down and watch that piece yet, but if it happens to be effective at curing the nausea I get from my own cooking—because, let’s face it, when you're whipping up lunch by yourself, things can go sideways—then I will certainly give it a look, perhaps even twice. Watching it three times, however, would feel like a blatant political provocation, and frankly, we shouldn't let them bait us like that.

From the very start, I was already thinking about giving up... seeing how incredibly tantalizing yet frustrating the viewing experience was going to be. I told myself, "Fine, I've got nothing else to do, I might as well see this through to the finish line." But after 25 minutes of Mel Gibson's relentless preaching and heavy-handed patriotism... when he started thanking God for his bread, his kids, his wife, his house, America, his dishwasher, and even his junk 😁 during a prayer that felt like it lasted an eternity... I was done 😁 and just shut off the TV 👍

It really all boils down to who we’re talking about, doesn't it? Personally, I think John Milius is fantastic, even if he carries that notorious right-wing reputation. As for this modern crop of movies, I'm honestly not so sure, but let's be real—it seems like the major Hollywood studios have been aggressively pushing this specific brand of "American-style patriotism" ever since 9/11 and throughout all these various conflicts. It actually brings to mind an interesting situation back in '99, when television stations across New York City, during the NATO bombings, would constantly broadcast films that depicted America in such a negative light: things like Wag the Dog, Casualties of War, or Apocalypse Now... and the kicker is, they were all American films!

Scottov's take on "Black Hawk Down" is actually much more honest about how it treats its audience. I know some people dismiss it as nothing more than American propaganda, but honestly, that’s such a shallow way to look at it.

So, about the movie "We Were Soldiers"... I mean, I get it. That whole church scene? Yeah, it felt a bit much. It hit me too, and honestly, it was kind of awful and just... well, yeah, it was bad. I guess you could say it was pretty cringe. But maybe, I don't know, try to just look past it?
To be honest, I actually thought the movie was really solid. It did a great job showing how brutal war actually is. It even showed, I guess, that the enemy soldiers aren't just monsters—they're people too. Like that one part with the soldier carrying his diary and a photo of his wife... it was a heavy moment.

That whole "Americana" vibe definitely bugs me too, but even with those scenes, I still think the movie can be good and high-quality and worth watching...

It just doesn't seem to make sense to me to boycott the entire film just because of those specific parts.

*We Were Soldiers* is a decent enough film. However, *UN* is five times more intense in terms of US propaganda. The main difference is that the enemies aren't portrayed as actual "people" like they are in *Soldier*; instead, they’re just mindless targets waiting to be shot.
Honestly, they’re all US propaganda. And you know why? It’s common knowledge that any movie involving the US military has to submit its script for review by the Pentagon first—it's been the same process for thirty years—to ensure everything is politically correct. If it doesn't pass, they won't provide any support or technical advice. That’s actually why *Apocalypse Now* was filmed in the Philippines; they had all the US military gear needed and were willing to rent it out.

I honestly only needed one movie to get the point—Independence Day. Get this: hostile aliens show up threatening the entire planet, specifically targeting the biggest, greatest, most beautiful country on earth, the USA.
But because we love the USA so much, we quickly crush those high-tech little green men and save humanity, proving once again that we’re the strongest nation out there and our long-awaited global police force.

man, you totally missed the point of Independence Day. Forget all that crap about the USA saving the world... the real key to the movie is right at the end--->the whole film acts like they aren't even there, then suddenly—bam—there's a JEW... and not just any guy, but a rabbi... they're looking for a priest or whatever, but nope, can't find one, but then this JEW pops up right when things hit the fan, total apocalypse, and there he is... and who else shows up in an American movie besides a JEW, just chanting away in his own way....

...just saw Lethal Weapon 4 on one of those channels...
at the end, there's this guy and a woman wanting to get married before she gives birth, so they're hunting for a priest in the hospital. They grab the first guy walking by and ask: 'Are you a priest?' ...he says no, but I'm a rabbi... I mean, what a coincidence, right? Out of everyone on the freaking planet, it's a JEW again, and again at the end of the movie, and again a rabbi saves the day, and again he's chanting in Hebrew so everyone gets confused and it's treated like a joke... even the JEW is supposed to be funny... give me a break
