So!Mazgoon - previewing material from the new album

Exactly three years ago, on Valentine's Day 2000, So!Mazgoon played their first show at KSET right after dropping their debut album. Now, they've just wrapped up recording their third studio record, making this Valentine's Day the perfect time to premiere the new material. Zan Jakopac, Max Juricic, Boris Leiner, and Stanko Kovacic are ready to unveil the band's evolved sound—expect a hell of a time.

Man, if only I could have been there... I’ve seen Mazgoon three times now, and every single time the crowd was just lifeless and pathetic; nobody was dancing, nobody was doing anything. Damn, I seriously love this band, especially that first album—it basically encapsulates my entire summer back in Valentine's Day 2000 (the second one is definitely weaker). At their last show in Indianapolis, they even did a cover of "Monkey man," which was absolute perfection...

Like Generation X - Your Generation (that track is genuinely great, regardless of the fact that it's a "punk" band by Billy Idol 😁)

Eeeeeee, thanks, really appreciate it... but let's be real, the cover charge is the least of my worries. A train ticket is going to run me about $150, and right now I'm sitting on maybe $20. 😢 Is some kind of Santa Claus coming through with presents for Valentine's Day, maybe bumping that price up by $50? 😁

The first Generation X album is an absolute masterpiece.

Hmm, I don't know... It's a decent enough album, but when you look at everything else that dropped during that era—"Damned Damned Damned", "The Clash", "Crossing The red Sea with The Adverts", "Another Music in a Different Kitchen", "The Image Has Cracked"—it feels pretty thin. At least to me, anyway...

Out of those ones you brought up, The Damned... and obviously the first Clash record are better, but the rest of the stuff isn't really hitting the mark for me. Personally, I’m a huge fan of solid pop songs built on that classic vocal-guitar-bass-drums setup, and everything on that first Generation X - Your Generation record fits that vibe perfectly (I smoke through their second album too, just maybe not quite as much). To be honest, I think the Buzzcocks are a way better singles band. The Adverts' debut is decent, though it definitely has some filler, and ATV feels like an incredibly pretentious band to me—they have these great moments here and there, but they just can't sustain it for an entire album. Anyway, we're totally drifting off topic.

Just a quick note to say that the first two albums by the original lineup and the first reformed Buzzcocks era are just as solid as "Singles Going Steady." That’s all I have to say about that... 😁

I actually traded my first two Buzzcocks vinyls back in the day for the first two Birthday Party records... those guys were truly a genius singles band above all else.

If there was ever a band you couldn't find anything to gossip about, it would be Mazgoon. No scandals, no political grandstanding, no controversial interviews... Just pure, beautiful songs. And music is meant for listening, not for talking about... When is summer finally getting here?
