But honestly, what's with throwing in all those elements from that Spartak TV show? And why on earth did they cast Orlando Bloom's twin brother, you know, Jon Snow, as the lead...

This whole project has been stuck in pre-production for ages, and it was originally supposed to star Orlando Bloom. But what really gets under my skin while watching the trailer is that predictable romance subplot—it feels like you just can't make a movie these days without forcing one in.

It’s true, ever since Titanic hit theaters, studios seem to prioritize the romance during pre-production for these disaster flicks, treating everything else as an afterthought. 🤣 Honestly though, I’m not really feeling much hype for this one. I’ve never been particularly big on ancient history movies, nor am I the biggest fan of Paul W. S. Anderson.

As soon as I saw Kit Harington was in it and realized it’s a period piece, I’m watching 😍

I was honestly bracing myself for some total bottom-of-the-barrel garbage, but it actually turned out to be... alright? Look, it definitely has its issues—mostly the dialogue and a few scenes that feel borderline ridiculous—plus it drags in spots, but at the end of the day, it’s just your typical Hollywood blockbuster. Kiefer Sutherland is easily the best part of the whole thing.

Rating is somewhere around 5 or 6 out of 10.

The romance was a bit irritating, though fortunately it didn't have a happy ending so the movie wasn't totally ruined 😁. It felt predictable, especially that final showdown with the "main villain." Wouldn't it have been better to focus on the city and the volcano instead of all that romance? It’s worth a watch regardless.
Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje steals every single scene. What a king; I've been a fan since OZ 🙏

My advice? Don't waste your money on this garbage. It’s honestly not worth it. If we hadn't scored free tickets for the night, I wouldn't have even bothered showing up.

I found it to be alright, nothing particularly groundbreaking, though certainly worth a watch if you have the time. Visually, it’s quite striking, even if the plot leans into some rather silly territory that I suppose is somewhat tolerable. As far as the cast goes, Kiefer Sutherland was probably the standout for me. For the most part, I think nimblemason3 gave a pretty solid breakdown of the film, though I might personally nudge the rating up just a tiny bit—perhaps a 6.5.

The movie is really solid. 9/10. If you're into action sequences and ancient history, this is definitely your kind of flick. There’s a romance running through it too, but the gladiators are the ones truly stealing the show. It's a great watch. I caught it in 3D at AMC $13. It wasn't cheap, but it was definitely time well spent. 🙂 The special effects and the fight scenes are easily the best parts of the whole movie.

IMDb? Please. People use it to post absolute nonsense. I wouldn't trust those ratings any more than I'd trust a flying cow.

Boring, cliché, subpar acting, and a plot that’s as predictable as it is unoriginal. The only saving grace is the setting in ancient Rome—the costume design and the atmosphere are actually quite interesting.

The main issue is the whole premise—Pompeii (turns out people aren't big fans of tragic romances). It’s kind of ridiculous to try and pull off a love story set in that tiny window between a guy becoming a gladiator and everything blowing up—love at first sight followed by sudden death within a day or two, maybe a week tops. The opening sequence showing how the lead ends up a gladiator is pretty pointless. And that whole subplot where the general is obsessed with the lead actress? Totally forced. The entire plot is just one cliché after another without any actual logic...

Just finished watching this and honestly, I’m not feeling it at all.

First off, casting Kiefer Sutherland as the main villain was a massive miss. Seriously, the whole movie felt like Jack Bauer just showed up dressed in Roman military gear. 😁

Then there's that cheesy, trashy love-at-first-sight trope between Jon Snow and that little Pompeian woman.

Thirdly, the casting is just bad across the board, especially with her parents. If I can't get past Kiefer being the bad guy because he's basically Jack Bauer 😁, then I definitely can't stomach Jared Harris playing this noble, caring father—especially after seeing him play that psychopathic Nazi nutjob David Robert Jones over in Fringe. And having Trinity as the mom doesn't exactly help things either.

The only decent parts were Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as a gladiator and the visual effects, which were actually pretty solid. Mind you, they look a bit fake sometimes and they're definitely overused, but they do the job.

And finally, that absolute nonsense about how the Pompeians don't feel like Romans?! What kind of stupid logic is that?!
