Getaway (2013)

A few years back, there was this project floating around Hollywood called ''Stopping Power'' that was supposed to be Jan de Bont's big comeback... The premise actually sounded decent—someone’s kid gets snatched during a family vacation, and the dad has to play chicken with the cops just to keep his child alive. People were pitching it as a mashup of de Bont's ''Speed'' and... well, nowadays you'd probably call it Nessonov's ''Taken''. John Cusack was slated for the lead, and the script came from the guy who gave us that creepy vibe of John Ryder in ''The Hitcher''. Not sure where it all went sideways, but the project is officially dead in the water. The reason I'm bringing up this little backstory is because while that specific movie might be gone, the concept isn't... coming out this year (well, in a few days, actually) is ''Getaway'', an action thriller about a guy whose wife is kidnapped, and if he wants her to make it out in one piece, he has to pull off these high-stakes driving stunts on command from the kidnappers (who are basically just a voice on a phone). It's got those ''Taken'' vibes, sure, but also hints of the ''Fast & Furious'' franchise, and the car work might even remind some people of ''Gone in 60 Seconds''. Since we're running pretty low on movies that actually nail good car chases and tight plots—especially since ''Fast & Furious'' has started to become a bit of a headache for everyone—this actually looks kind of interesting... and considering the budget is probably only slightly higher than the catering bill for a ''Furious'' set, you have to respect the hustle. The cast features Ethan Hawke (who's been building a really solid reputation lately by starring in these low-budget flicks that somehow turn into massive hits; think ''The Purge'' or ''Sinister'') Selena Gomez (who most people agree is the weakest link here/just carries a ton of bad buzz) Jon Voight (from what I gather, he's just doing voice work, not appearing on screen) and that somewhat forgotten 90s villain Bruce Payne. If nothing changes, it drops on 8/30.

Honestly, as soon as I spot a high-end sports car on a movie poster, I’m pretty much sold right then and there—how could I not be interested? 😁

All I noticed in the trailer was how Hawke totally swiped Cruise's jacket🤣

The movie looks pretty cool, but I don't get it—maybe I’m just getting too old for this—but why does nobody seem to dig the brunette? Did I miss something? To me, she feels like every other character in this genre...

Ethan Hawke, high-speed chases, and nonstop action? That's always a winning combo for me. Definitely adding this to my watchlist 🙂

As soon as I spotted Selena Gomez in the trailer, I pretty much wrote this movie off. It feels like Hawke used to pick much stronger projects back in the day.

I’ll probably give it a watch just because I'm hoping for some decent action, but I'm definitely not expecting a top-tier thriller.

So, looking at trailer #2, it seems like he picks up Selena on the road just because she asked him to, but if you look back at the first trailer, it feels more like Selena was actually trying to hijack his car. In that version, he disarms her and pulls her inside, forcing her to stick around with him... hmm, interesting.

Man, the rating just tanked... sitting at a 3.8/10 now

Looks like everyone is just piling on Selena because of her involvement, and she's basically dragging the whole score down.

Why on earth would Ethan take a role in a flick like this, especially with an even worse cast than this one😕 Seriously, why🙂

I just don't get it! Ethan was actually in Before Midnight this year, which was a great film. And then he turns around and dives straight into this garbage.

What happened? Is he drowning in debt or is his agent just messing with him?

Even with the terrible reviews, I found this movie pretty gripping and exciting. 8/10 👍 It only drags a bit toward the end. The concept of a disembodied voice issuing commands and threatening the lead's wife is actually a great hook. This could have been a massive hit if the execution had been more creative. They really should have added more characters, some more inventive challenges, and maybe even some action scenes outside the car or more gunfights. If they had gone that route, it would’ve been a total winner... 🍿
