So, the word "peder" actually traces its roots back to Ancient Greece. It’s basically a mashup of the words *pais* (which means boy) and *erao* (meaning to desire).

Back in Ancient Greece, being a "paiderastes" wasn't even seen the way we talk about it today; it was often tied to the whole mentor thing. For wealthy kids, getting educated meant following a mentor around. They’d watch political speeches in the agora, help out with public business, hit the gym together, and hang out at symposia.

From that Greek term, you get "pederasty," which describes a man's attraction to the same sex—specifically an older guy toward an adolescent.

You see references to pederasty (as a synonym for gay men) all over ancient literature. There’s even that famous dialogue between Socrates and Crito in the work "The Banquet."

Back then, the term didn't carry that nasty weight it does now. It was just a way to describe a sexual orientation that included both gay and bisexual men.

When did calling someone a "peder" become an insult? Nobody really knows. But we do know that the English slur "faggot" turned toxic around the 17th century. Originally, "faggot" meant a bundle of sticks, and it was used to describe older women. Since there was this huge stereotype back then that all gay men were "feminine," they started using the term to mock men they saw as effeminate, and that’s how it got its ugly reputation.

It's pretty interesting that on https://en.wiktionary.org, the definitions for the term cover everything from a man attracted to the same sex to a lazy, clumsy, or unprincipled person. Synonyms usually include things like homosexual or just straight-up insults.

Bottom line: the word definitely picked up a negative vibe over time. But look at what happened with the word "queer"—how it went from a slur to a politically correct label. Maybe the same thing will happen with "peder." Who knows.

Look, Nikola Tesla was hands down the greatest electrical and mechanical engineer to ever come out of this country (PERIOD). Honestly, whether he was American, or whatever other label people want to throw at him—gay, straight, red, green, none of that actually matters for history books or the massive legacy of inventions he left behind.
