I wanted something a little abrasive and cathartic to clear the air in this thread, and what better than Swans? Initially, I was thinking Godflesh, but I figured Swans would work just fine.
This is honestly like getting hit straight in the solar plexus. 😁
I first discovered them back around '86 when I heard Igor Vidmar spinning Holy Money on Student Radio. I still remember how heavy that sounded to me at the time. Then came '87, when Tiljak brought The Children of God to Off the Grid... though, of course, there were some lighter tracks too, acting as a sort of counterweight to those massive sonic hits.

I first stumbled onto them back around '86 after hearing Igor Vidmar spinning Holy Money on Student Radio. I still remember how much that music messed with my head at the time. Then came '87, when Tiljak brought The Children of God to Off the Grid... though there were definitely some lighter, easier tracks that acted as a counterweight to those heavy hits.
I’ve listened to just about everything—grindcore, black metal, death metal in its most extreme forms—but nothing even comes close to early Swans.
It’s just so abrasive, intense, and repetitive in that primal way, almost like tribal music a shaman would play. It’s cathartic in a way that nothing else can touch. The whole point of this music is to release emotion; in this case, Gira lets it all out, creating this atmosphere of pure cleansing. It makes sense, because it's easy to explain today's world using terms like "Power for Power" which we find in these songs.
Anyway, I better stop rambling, otherwise I won't have anything left to say if this thread moves on too fast. 😁

Quote : Weekend Warrior
He’s more than just some cowboy or a standard country artist—he’s one of the greatest synthesizers of "popular" music I've ever heard. A true musician in the Humboldt sense, really... one of the last of his kind. A man fighting for real values, a genuine gentleman, and a total rebel all at once. Respect to Hanka, Willie, Johnny, George, or Waylon, but for me, Merle is the king of country.

I haven't even finished my homework on Kurt Cobain yet, so I think I’m gonna sit this round out—but hey, I’ll still be voting 😁

...I'm back, just for one day, mostly because I don't have a mountain of suggestions this time.

Just settle in and enjoy the listening session...

Let’s say we give it a full 48 hours once we pass that five-album mark. Even then, we’re still looking at a ridiculous pace of nine albums in a single 24-hour window...
#2313 ·
In my humble opinion, that's a pretty meager number of albums for a single week.
Can anyone throw out some more suggestions? I'm all ears if you're feeling inspired!

Can anyone drop some more suggestions? If you want to, that is.
Yeah. Maybe we should stick to the 5-day poll format like we planned, but let everyone pitch in two albums instead. We’d be able to cover double the amount in a single week. Plus, the competition would actually be fierce, which makes winning feel way more rewarding.
#2315 ·
Since not everyone has had a chance to weigh in yet…
I've extended the poll to two days total.
That should be more than enough time given how many albums we're looking at.

Just opened up my voting window 🤦
Mostly, I’d just cast my vote for Swansea, though it wouldn't change a damn thing anyway 😁
New album of the week... musically it holds its own, but man, some of the worst lyrics I've ever had the misfortune of hearing. "A father loves his son dearly," "God the Father loves His children," blah blah blah. It’s like listening to a bunch of seniors going through menopause. 😁

Honestly, I'd probably just vote for Swansea—not like it would change a damn thing anyway. 😁
New album of the week... musically it’s decent enough—but man, some of the worst lyrics I've ever had the displeasure of hearing. It’s all that "a father loves his son" and "God loves His children" nonsense. Honestly? Sounds like a bunch of old guys hitting menopause. 😁
I spun this album again right before I hit the polls, and honestly—it didn't hit nearly as hard as the last time around. The biggest issue—way bigger than the lyrics, since you can't exactly expect Dylan or Baudelaire levels of poetry within the framework of vocal-heavy soul music—is that flat, uninspired vibe they went for. It feels like they thought being monotone would make the record feel cohesive, but it just drags. Aside from the brilliant Inner City Blues, everything from track two onwards feels pretty one-note, though I will say Mercy Mercy Me breaks up the monotony just a little bit.
I'm siding with Merle here—I went back and forth on Kemo, but that just isn't one of his standout records—as for those loud guys, especially Swansea at this stage, you either gotta blast them with the volume cranked or just stay far away.
#2319 ·
When I first heard Kemo, my initial thought was that this might just be a compilation, though I couldn't quite tell if it was actually a full-length studio album or something else entirely...

Maybe that sweetness in this Motown classic is actually intentional. It feels like part of the Creator's master plan. 😁
Even within the context of their usual output, which tends to get a little sugary and over-the-top from time to time. What's Going On The bio is way too avant-garde for me. Besides, Marvin Gaye had a rough time getting everything recorded.
