Charles Ramos4 said:A country where albums like those are sitting in the top 10 bestsellers doesn't deserve anything other than to fall apart. For god's sake, the musical taste in that nation is just pure garbage. 🤦

👍 What’s even worse is that things have actually gotten more intense on what used to be Yugoslavia territory. It’s a cycle, really... the kind of music they listen to dictates how they think, which dictates their politics... it was the same back in Yugoslavia and it's the exact same story today.

Carol Walker said:Hmm, I noticed the debate around my suggestion died down a bit, so let me clarify why I picked this one. To me, The Eagles are absolute perfection, and honestly, Hotel California is probably the greatest song ever written. But it’s kind of depressing because I get the feeling that 90% of people in my circle only know that one track—some don't even know that! I once told a friend what my favorite song was, and when I finally revealed it, he just went, "Oh, they're a one-hit wonder."

I guess comments like that happen because I belong to a relatively younger generation (The Eagles were basically formed right around the time my mom 😬 ) so, you know, whatever.

That said, it feels like I’m surrounded by actual music buffs here—people who definitely know way more than just the song Hotel California. So I figured, why not suggest this album and see what you all think? Maybe someone isn't even a fan of The Eagles or familiar with their catalog, and this album might actually catch them by surprise. That’s really what drove my decision.

Anyway, during my short stint on this thread, I’ve suggested some pretty wildly different albums (Cooper, Golden Boy, Apparat, and now Hotel California) mostly because my listening habits are all over the place. Sometimes I’ll throw out a legendary classic, and other times I’ll pick something obscure, because sometimes I listen to household names and sometimes I dive into artists who aren't exactly mainstream.

I didn't actually get a chance to listen to the albums from the last round, so I didn't want to vote for something just because I already love it. It would have been easy to just vote for, say, Sam Fender, whose album I already know and enjoy—but what's the point? I'm here to discover new stuff, but I also don't want to sabotage great albums just because they're famous. For instance, albums by Isaak or The Rolling Stones are incredible; why shouldn't I vote for them? Just because they're well-known? It seems silly to put pressure on how anyone should vote, and honestly, winning isn't even the most important part to me. Sure, it’s nice to see your suggestion win, but personally, seeing *any* vote counts as a win because it means something resonated with someone, just like it did with me. (Oh, I'll use this moment to say thanks to Amanda Robinson4 and Vanch for voting for Apparat! I was expecting zero votes for that one, so seeing two—especially from the mods—felt like a massive victory to me.)

At the end of the day, my point is that everyone should just vote for what they actually like, whether it's Apparat or The Eagles. It doesn't matter. If an album is mediocre or just bad, a big name won't save it (I mean, didn't System of a Down flop despite being huge?). Likewise, if an album is genuinely good, having a famous name behind it shouldn't be a reason for anyone to sabotage it just to help some unknown artist win.

So yeah, 👍

You don't really owe anyone an explanation. As far as I'm concerned, I was just expressing doubt that it's harder for the underdogs here to win, regardless of how good the music is. If I understood correctly, this is basically like a forum version of Eurovision where we are the jury. That means we should focus strictly on the music rather than how popular the band is, so we can decide what's actually good as objectively as possible. If we can do that, then fine.

It feels worse now because there's barely anything worth listening to available—or at least, very little—whereas back in the old days, you could find decent bands everywhere. Even if they were just top-selling acts like Šemša or Brene. I mean, once I see an album titled uzak Pantalon, I already know there isn't a single listenable track on it. If it's called uzak Pantalon, you can just take that whole vibe and shove it, honestly. I'm just done with it.🙂

Man. And then you hear someone say: "Do you really think you're smarter than everyone else? If the majority is listening to it, it must be good"... yeah, that's just mass appeal... and that's exactly what gets shoved down our throats by the media as "popular." Sure, there used to be quality in mainstream bands back in the day, but even then, when you look at everything that was actually available, those were still just a decent minority. I mean, I just look at history and how the masses have behaved regarding other stuff, and it becomes immediately clear to me what the crowd is all about and what their taste is like—whether we're talking music, politics, whatever... Once you start digging and actually thinking for yourself, your taste shifts instantly.

The album I suggested is my absolute favorite, though honestly, their other stuff doesn't really hit the same way for me. The band started heading in a totally different direction right after their second record, and they lost that specific magic they had here—this one is just in a league of its all own. But hey, regardless of my personal taste, I have a feeling my pick won't be sitting at the very top of the list this time. At best, it’ll probably land somewhere in the middle.
Unless there's some kind of huge surprise in store...

Jebote, the ego on some people here is unreal. Just take a breath... we’re talking about a meaningless poll on a meaningless forum on an insignificant planet in an insignificant galaxy. Look, I already promised northerndrifter42 that I’d vote for him exclusively until he wins, but hey, I can swing a vote your way if he’s cool with it.

I listen to everyone from household names to artists you've probably never heard of.

Just suggest whatever you actually enjoy and can talk about for a second. If people vibe with it, great. Don't overthink it or stress about the rest.👍

For what it's worth, I've been pushing nothing but metal for the last month, and clearly, the crowd here isn't really feeling that vibe right now. Doesn't mean I'm stopping, though.😁

Country Music and its modern pop successors have always been the biggest thing in the US. My old man used to claim—if I remember him right—that those big American country hits were always the most popular in places like New York. Maybe that’s a bit radical or just plain wrong, but honestly? I’d say New Yorkers actually listen to modern pop-country more than people in other cities do—plus, Americans as a whole are just a more cultured, well-read crowd, regardless of where they're from.

Look, the list is what it is—no point crying about it. All I know is that regardless of what kind of country this ends up being, I’d much rather have spent my youth at some community service project holding hands with a cute girl from a neighboring state, with Blue Orchestra playing in the background, than living through this messy transition era where everyone's obsessed with their phones and chasing empty promises of a bright future.

Blindly speaking, Pharaoh is my favorite. I’ve practically worn out my digital library listening to Kreator over and over... 🙏 Between Sun Ra and Alice Coltrane, they're my go-to jazz legends right now.

👍

Objectively speaking, this is easily the best album in the group. But now I gotta figure out who I'm actually voting for personally. 😁

And we still haven't had anyone suggest Sun Ra—we need to fix that ASAP.

And water becomes rain, falling to the earth;

In this way, nothing, air, water,
and fire are actually one and the same—
On other levels."

What complexes? What are you even talking about? And how am I supposed to vote for you when I'm not even the one suggesting albums 🤔

I don't really care—it doesn't bother me—but honestly, this whole thing feels pretty pointless now. We should just pivot to a different kind of game—like picking the best tracks or the best album from a specific band. If the number of people suggesting albums doubles next week, what then? Are we supposed to spend ten days voting? There is zero chance I'm sitting through 15 albums in five days—especially when ten of them aren't even worth my time if someone offered them for free—plus there's those other two or three that I wouldn't even give away to a bartender for a beer while I'm wasted.
I can't remember a time in my life when God commanded me to listen to more than three or four albums a week.

From that first group, I'll admit CSNY has more artistic weight than the Eagles—but nobody else on that list holds up, regardless of their hits. From the second group, though, I’d say the same about Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, and maybe even the Grateful Dead. It's not like I think they're the greatest ever or anything, but calling them just "background music" is total nonsense.

The Eagles are stronger to me than CSNY. With the Eagles, I'm certain that for at least those first three or four years, they were actually driven by honest impulses—whereas those four guys always felt fake from the jump. Set aside their ten or so great songs for a second.

To me, this is just classic post-hippie, proto-Luciferian nonsense that starts getting on my nerves after only a few minutes. If we're talking about actual maturity, humor, or just masterful handling of roots American music, John Prine is easily the most evolved artist here this week. Donald and Lydia, Paradise, Illegal Smile, or Sam Stone would eat everything else on this list for breakfast. Maybe except for the title track Jolene or some of The Stooges.

God, I love a little variety...😁

Anyway, stepping away from the album talk for a second—we’re slowing things down a touch while we cook up something totally new and wild. Things are really picking up here on the boards, and seeing some fresh faces join the mix is honestly the best part...

Five days might actually be a bit too long for the poll, since I can see some of you have already made up your minds. Let's knock it back down to three days.

A I Will Always Love You (, Manchild,) nothing? Do you even have a soul, you wicked woman? 🙂

Edit: I don't know if you noticed, but every single song on that album is incredibly pretentious. Clearly, she was just being a submissive little pushover.

I was done with Prine after three songs. If you're going on a trip with Sanders, you need an open mind. Giving up after the tenth song is like stopping mid-sex before you've even gotten your pants down.

Most of this stuff doesn't really hit for me lately either. Probably just a mix of what's being pushed and my own mood.

No kidding he's fed up—I wouldn't have expected anything less after that top-tier metaphor about pulling down his pants.😁

If you're looking to open your mind—run on some Marijuana—you might actually find some top-tier polemic literature here. It’s way better than that mindless babbling you get after someone starts blowing on a saxophone.😁
