I gotta post this late at night because my mornings are slammed with stuff I actually have to do.

So, here's my pick for this round: The Shaggs-Philosophy of The World (1969)

Some of you might already know the deal with this one. 🙂 Whether I actually dig it or if it’s any good is a whole other conversation entirely.
The album is weird, totally off the wall, and honestly, I'm just curious—kind of like watching a science experiment—to see how it lands in the voting.

Morphine - Good

Year: 1992
Genre: alternative rock, acid jazz

I’m not sure if I’m stating the obvious here or if everyone’s already heard this one. I was actually debating between this record and Cure for Pain. In the end, I went with their debut—Good. It feels a bit rawer, but honestly, it sounds fantastic. Maybe it hasn't been played to death quite as much, so there's an opening here. Their sound is pretty minimalist and leans into the darker side, but they don't fall into being depressive. Give it a spin.

Brian Eno - Another Day on Earth (2005)

Tracklist
1. This (03:33)
2. And Then sol Clear (05:49)
3. Long Way Down (02:40)
4. Going Unconscious (04:22)
5. Caught Between (04:25)
6. Passing Over (04:25)
7. How Many Worlds (04:47)
8. Bottomliners (03:59)
9. Just Another Day (04:21)
10. Under (05:19)
11. Bon Bomb (03:09)

Brian Eno doesn't really sing—in fact, before this record, he hadn't really let his voice out for over a decade. Personally, I love it when Eno sings; it’s what Jazz Butcher was all about in "When Eno Sings"
.
As for this album, Eno isn't diving into anything too experimental here. He's still playing in that ambient space, but it feels much more accessible than his older stuff—sort of like ambient pop. It's the kind of album where you can just get lost in it—maybe while staring out at a sunset or something.
If you're looking for a standout track, I'd suggest just this one:

Uh, this is actually a really solid set.

I'm waiting on one more suggestion since I'm holding onto the last one myself, even though I hadn't planned on it.
So, hurry up if anyone had something in mind. 🙂

Julia Holter - have you in my Wilderness ( 2015)

image

I just gave this a spin yesterday. I needed something new, and I’d honestly never heard of Julia Holter before... but man, she blew me away after just a few listens. It’s rare to hear such intuitive vocal work in modern music. 'Lucette' was a total revelation for me, especially the live izvedba.

+

Julia Holter sings here of a woman that wakes up on a Balearic island, badly wounded and strewn with cactus leaves. As the song proceeds, she explores the woman's flickering consciousness.

The song is based on a minor character fra a Colette short Story.
(...)
"I was interested in the state of waking up from being unconscious in an unknown place. I wanted to make a song that was kind of grotesque that captures that moment of confusion and gradually the mind gets to remember what happens, and you start to see things emerge more clearly."

Not to mention, I was pleasantly surprised to find this album inspired by my favorite Scott Walker track from 'Scott 4'—which has basically been on my daily rotation for the last month. Because of that, everything about this felt incredibly natural to me yesterday and today. I don't even know if it's actually that good or if I'm just imagining things (and that's saying something, since you really need to hear this track with fresh ears, early in the morning, to get the full experience).

There are some solid albums in here. Maybe 24 hours isn't quite enough time to give everything the deep dive it deserves, but let's give it a shot.
I didn't want to clutter the thread with too many different opinions, so a few of these ended up being hits or misses. With Brian Eno, you get the good along with the bad. I really dug the first and last tracks—they lean more into that downtempo vibe—but the rest is mostly ambient, which just isn't my scene. Some of these more experimental records probably need a few more spins before the pieces actually click into place.
Does anyone know which New Wave artist covered Prince's "When You Were Mine"? Was it someone like Jura Stublić or a similar act? It sounds incredibly familiar, but I just can't place it.

?
A pretty bad cover of a truly brilliant song.

There are just so many covers of this track out there.

https://popcultureexperiment.com/201...you-were-mine/

I honestly thought the second half was Heart by Stublić, but after giving it a listen, I'm not convinced. It doesn't quite hit the same way. Maybe it's some old rock band like Aerosmith or something—or maybe I'm just losing my mind.

I honestly thought it was Stublić's Heart of Glass (that second part of the song) — but after giving it a listen, it doesn't quite hit the same. Maybe it's some old rock band, or maybe I'm just tripping.

You let all my friends come over and eat
And you were so strange
You didn’t have the decency to change the sheets
Oh girl, when you were mine
I used to let you wear all my clothes

The melody is just perfect — maybe that's why it feels so familiar, like something you can't quite place. Great melodies always work that way, so the endless covers make sense, but the only reason anyone other than Prince would sing THESE specific lyrics is if they're some obscure indie outfit trying to be edgy.

Quick thoughts after a speed-run listen

Peter Hamil-Over The opening track gives off major gothic rock vibes, but the rest of the stuff really reminds me of Nick Cave. He actually managed to grab my attention, even if everything isn't quite perfect. Still, a solid quick listen.

Morphine-Good Those trumpets are absolutely delicious. It’s a shame this isn't an instrumental album (or at least feels that way during a quick spin); the vocals and melody just get in the way.

Brian Eno-Another day on earth
Weird that this isn't on Spotify. Had to hunt it down on YouTube. Just a quick skim through what I could hear. Nah, it's not really hitting the mark for me.

Valentino Bošković - Velika prasak This caught me off guard. I totally thought I was in for a jazz album—something like that late American jazz legend who played the vibraphone or sax or whatever. 🤔 The lyrics are pretty incomprehensible at first. Gave it a shot, though.
Prince-Dirty Mind The second track is cool, but it didn't really pack a punch during a fast listen. Maybe because his style is so unmistakable that there aren't many surprises left.

Rei Harakami-Colors of The dark Hmm, maybe a little too obscure for my taste?

Corrosion of Conformity - Blind Sounds like Metallica playing hard rock.
Dali`s Car - The Waking hour Interesting, but the vocals stumble a bit. It narrowly missed the cut for me. 😬
Julia Holter - have you in my Wilderness
Glad someone mentioned her. I was literally just thinking about this singer but couldn't pull her name from my brain. I checked out her last album, Aviary, which was intriguing but pretty hard to wrap your head around. But man, as soon as that first track on this album started, it was love at first sight. Maybe I skipped to the second track or something, I don't know, but that was it. Best thing I've heard in a quick listen. 😍

Peter Hammill, man...
this album is something else.
🙏 😍

redbear12, I'm glad you liked it and that it reminded you of Julia Holter. I just had to share it—she's amazing.

from the selection:

Peter Hammill - Over
I honestly shouldn't have even hesitated while voting, since this is one of my absolute favorites. Even though I figured there was zero chance, I really hope it stays on the list somehow... I wouldn't have dared to suggest 'Over' specifically, though. I try to avoid suggesting my all-time favorites from certain artists because I never know what to say about them. It's hard to stay objective when you love something that much... so I'm pretty curious to see what Arthur Brown6 writes in the intro.

Rei Harakami - Colors of The dark
I absolutely loved this today! I listened to it a few times, along with another one of his, 'Wasuremono'. Just beautiful, calming Japanese electronica and minimalism. It reminded me of something. I'm hoping for a tie! Maybe I should dig up some of his earlier stuff too.

Morphine are great; I love 'Good', but 'Cure for Pain' is definitely my favorite. Brian Eno has plenty of better, more important albums out there; this one is okay, I guess, but it didn't really grab me... I couldn't get to Valentino Bošković today, wasn't really feeling it, but I will when I get a chance. It's cool that there's a new album out! And Car - The Waking hour are interesting. That's about it. There's more, but I haven't had time to go through everything like I usually try to. Oh, and I missed Prince too. Maybe tomorrow...
