Sandi – U tvojim mislama (1994)

Tracklist:
  1. In your thoughts... 3:50 / I just caught a glimpse of that spot... and honestly, it’s hard to wrap my head around how much things have shifted since we last talked about it. It makes you wonder where everything went wrong, or if it was always destined to end up like this... maybe we were just looking at it through rose-colored glasses back then.
  2. When the heart finally makes its decision... 4:18 / I can't quite wrap my head around what you're trying to point out here... there isn't much to go on...
  3. A prayer for you... 3:49
  4. When you find yourself standing all alone... 4:25
  5. Drunk... 4:45
  6. Never... 3:58
  7. Nebo 4:58 / I can't quite put my finger on it, but there's something about the way everything is settling right now... it feels like we're just waiting for that one specific moment to hit, you know? Like we're all just staring at the horizon, hoping for a sign...
  8. Neither north nor south... 5:17

Gaia

A little eco-conscious gothic/doom/progressive/whatever-you-want-to-call-it metal from the 90s.

Queens of The Stone Age - ... Like Clockwork (2013)

image

The sixth studio outing from those stoner rock legends led by Josh Homme. Man, I remember blasting this everywhere when it first dropped... I even caught them live back then at the Trade Fair! The air was thick, honestly felt like there was more smoke in the atmosphere than actual tobacco 🙂. I saw them again later at an INmusic show, but that vibe just didn't hit the same way (not because of the smoke, obviously)

1. Keep Your Eyes Peeled
2. I Sat by the Ocean
3. The Vampyre of Time and Memory
4. If I Had a Tail
5. My God Is the Sun
6. Kalopsia
7. Fairweather Friends
8. Smooth Sailing
9. I Appear Missing
10. ...Like Clockwork

Nick Oliveri couldn't care less—he was basically walking around naked near those 5G towers.

Just messing with you.

Honestly, I have no clue what happened either—maybe Dave Grohl got into a scrap or something.

L'Arpeggiata, Christina Pluhar featuring Lucilla Galeazzi and Marco Beasley-La Tarantella: Antidotum Tarantulae (2002)

First off, let me break down this title so you aren't lost. L'Arpeggiata is the ensemble, Christina Pluhar is the one calling the shots, and Lucilla Galeazzi and Marco Beasley handle most of the vocals on this record.

The vibe: I’m just gonna make up my own label for this stuff. I'm calling it Italian proto-pop music. 🙂

Listening to this on my laptop with these pathetic little built-in speakers just doesn't do it justice. Honestly, I have a feeling it would be a total revelation if I could just get my hands on the original CD and set up some proper surround sound... because the actual content sounds absolutely incredible...

I’ve never been much of a Queens of the Stone Age fan; their stuff never really clicked for me, even though I ended up at two of their shows (call it fate, I guess) and I can't honestly say I had a blast. There’s just something missing in their signature sound for my taste.

I know Tiamat, but I haven't really done a deep dive into them before. I think Weakling is a solid black metal choice, so I’m going to sit down and give them a proper listen tomorrow. I want to hear how they hold up on my high-end home speakers—there's nothing quite like hearing that raw, gritty, lo-fi black metal sound exactly the way it was meant to be heard.

Too much nicotine, Valium, Vicodin, weed, Boner, and booze... and honestly, a little cocaine wouldn't surprise me either.

Or maybe just not enough of everything combined, who knows with those rockers out in CA.

Jason Mendoza said:I know Tiamat, but I haven't really dug deep into them before. Back when I was a weakling, I liked their black metal stuff. I'll give them a proper listen tomorrow (on my expensive home speakers, they'll probably sound properly filthy and lo-fi, exactly how black metal should sound).

If you want that harder, raw Tiamat sound, you have to go back to the start of their discography. They drifted into more experimental territory later on, even did a brief stint with electronic music, which made them a lot softer. Their albums vary wildly in both style and quality. For me, Wildhoney was the turning point—they blended both worlds and added some Pink Floyd psychedelia to the mix. It's easily their best work.

Everything sounds terrible on a laptop if you aren't using headphones. Seriously—seeing kids blasting music through phone speakers makes me want to lose it.

Yeah, you definitely need headphones for this one—even if the mix feels intentionally muddy, kind of like a lot of solid black metal production. Black metal is basically the opposite of death metal; just listen to those early 90s Darkthrone classics.

The material is top-tier, too. I agree—I think this represents the peak of black metal after the mid-90s, even if the whole album is super heavy and bleak.

By the way, this thing is basically impossible to find. It's out of print and the label either won't or can't do a reissue. I'm pretty sure die-hard fans are dropping $200+ on copies over on Amazon and Discogs.

I’ve always had this slight, nagging antipathy toward Homme—not that I'm surprised by this whole massive frenzy surrounding him, though. Look, Queens of the Stone Age isn't bad music or anything, it's just that I've never really done a deep dive into them... they definitely don't hit quite like the Foo Fighters do for me, anyway.

OT:
I was actually debating which albums to tackle over the next few weeks—honestly, there's one artist I'm still undecided on—so I figured I'd just start with something I've been playing on repeat lately. And honestly, nobody has even mentioned how much my memory is failing me, or talked about what might be one of the absolute best multi-instrumentalists out there right now.
