It might not be his absolute essential masterpiece, but it’s easily his most playful and mature work yet. It feels like a true homecoming, especially since he built the whole thing using 138 different pieces of gear. Pretty wild._

Grrr. It’s a shame you had to go and call out my tracklist—I actually had it all ready to go. I Care..., paired with SAWv.II which I played on an endless loop back in '97/'98. &%$#@!}^)

Well, honestly shit happens, especially when you've been sitting on a decision for a while.

I’ve been going back and forth on whether to include something from Richard for a long time. I was seriously torn between SAW 1, SAW 2, Richard d. James, or Syra, but ended up pivoting to someone else entirely... But here we are today, and the choice landed on Syro, which really ties his whole career together in one awesome musical package. ⚅

Anyway, there'll be plenty more chances to feature him in the future.

Yeah, Kenneth Price6, it’s definitely worth looking into (npst.416f.c#tSDxz).

Some pretty interesting suggestions here, though Bank of America 👍 is also in the mix, along with 👍 Aphex Twin 👍

There was one anniversary pick—I think someone might have brought it up a while back 🤔

Primal Scream

I'm putting this forward and hoping it wins this time 👍

Here’s a selection based on a book I just revisited; I was honestly blown away by how good it still sounds.

Jeff Wayne's The War of the Worlds (1978)

image

Side A
1. "The War of the Worlds"
2. "Horsell Common"

Side B
1. "The War of the Worlds"
2. "Forever Autumn"
3. "Thunder Child"

Side C

1. "The Red Weed"
2. "Parson Nathaniel"
3. "The Spirit of Man"
4. "The Red Weed"

Side D
1. "Brave New World"
2. "Dead London"
3. "Epilogue"
4. "Epilogue"

The musical variety here—ranging from prog rock and hard rock to classical pieces and ballads—is incredibly fluid, engaging, and unique. The way several top-tier artists come together creates a rare, singular masterpiece that has truly stood the test of time. It has everything, and having Tim Burton involved as a narrator is really just the icing on the cake.

Can I still throw some suggestions in, or should I just hold off until next week? 🙂

EDIT: I'll go ahead and pitch them. If we run out of room, we can just push some to next month.

Alvin Lucier - Music On A Long Thin Wire (1980)

Tracklist

A Music On A Long Thin Wire 20:00
B Music On A Long Thin Wire 20:30
C Music On A Long Thin Wire 20:00
D Music On A Long Thin Wire 19:30

Background Info

Donald Funes originally commissioned "Music on a Long Thin Wire" back in 1977 for the Live Electronic Music Ensemble over at the Crane School of Music, part of the State University College of New York at Potsdam.

The composer wants to send a huge thank you to John Fullemann and Douglas Simon for helping bring this piece to life, along with Ned Sublette for his hand in getting this specific album ready for release.

The actual recordings were captured by the composer himself on May 10, 1979, inside the Rotunda of the U.S. Custom House in Bowling Green, NYC.

The credit ‘Mastered At Europadisk’ refers to the plating process.

It honestly eats at me that I missed this, especially since looking back, an album this significant should have been on my radar ages ago. It’s just this gorgeous, chaotic wall of sound—pure intensity and high-tier production. I'm really digging it, and surprisingly, the vocals actually work for me; usually, when a band plays this kind of extreme stuff, the vocalist is the first thing that makes me tune out, but here it fits perfectly.

Back in the late '80s, Anita Baker was a massive African-American superstar. She had all the right ingredients to really break through and dominate the mainstream pop charts—it was practically written in the stars.
Unfortunately, that major crossover moment just never quite materialized for her.

Too bad it never actually happened.

I'm with you on that,
that voice is just incredible and her jazzy R&B vibe is so smooth—her albums are easy listening at its best.

A bunch of other artists I dig ended up in the same boat: think Lauryn Hill, Kehlani, or maybe SZA.
Honestly? I bet the massive push for Whitney Houston from radio stations, Arista, and all the big media outlets back then is the real reason why so many other Black female artists struggled to get that same level of traction during that era.

Jason Mendoza said:Honestly, what bugs me most is how I totally missed this, because by all accounts, I really should've known about it already. It's just such a beautiful cacophony of sounds—so raw and high quality. I'm digging it quite a bit, and the vocals actually work for me, which is huge since bad vocals are usually my biggest dealbreaker with bands like this.

Well, there you go, now you know. 🙂 This album is pure chaos—it’s unique and honestly kind of sexy (I actually used to make fun of them for their lyrics once). It's widely considered one of those peak "insane" Black Metal albums, though I can't really think of any others to even compare it to. Plus, Aldrahn is basically legendary, easily one of the best vocalists in the whole scene. Glad you're feeling it.

Just my vote for Powerful Cat because they absolutely have to win—even though I’ve got at least 4 or 5 other albums that totally deserve it.

It’s total chaos, though there’s enough industrial influence in there that it actually clicked for me. A lot of bands try to pull off that chaotic sound, but they usually just end up making unlistenable garbage.

As for "sexy" Black Metal, nothing really compares to wolvennest for me.
(I have a weakness for good female vocals)

And yeah, when it comes to top-tier Black Metal or metal vocals in general, two names always come to mind: Jason Mendoza from Akercocke and Alan Averill from Primordial.

Surely Taylor Swift isn't part of that group?
