To get straight to the point, over in the diaspora sub-forum, there used to be two separate threads dedicated to Canada:

Employment in Canada

Emigration and living in Canada

And after about a thousand posts, those two threads were eventually locked, and they just opened one big master thread instead.

Now, look, I totally get why they did that, except for the fact that on this new main thread, you aren't even allowed to ask a single question regarding moving to Canada—whether it’s something silly like "is it expensive there?", something about paperwork, or just asking if any procedures have changed lately...

The "solution" they went with was basically pinning links to all the old Canada-related topics and pages in the top post, and now people are just expected to figure things out on their own.

I completely sympathize with the moderators, honestly, because people get so tired of seeing the same repetitive questions over and over, like "how much does stuff cost," how to immigrate, if you need a visa, or even just basic life stuff. And there really are certain questions that specific people keep asking constantly without even bothering to read the last twenty pages of the thread, where the answer has already been given at least ten times...

But you also have to realize that there are still ongoing issues that some individuals are facing, things that haven't been brought up yet or weren't handled well before.
Like, what happens if something changes this year regarding the Working holiday program rules and suddenly everyone has a ton of questions—but then you aren't allowed to ask them here.

My take is that they should probably allow a bit more breathing room for questions—just the regular, everyday kind—while still scrubbing all the nonsense about asylum or specific immigration tactics.

For example, right now I have absolutely no clue if my three-year-old can come with me on my Working holiday permit, or if they need their own separate one. The websites don't go into detail anywhere, and I'm not supposed to ask on the forum, even though there's a good chance someone has already called the Canadian Embassy and actually knows the answer...

I'm not looking for a ban or a report or anything like that, I'm just trying to politely point out an issue that more and more people are complaining about. If things stay exactly like this, well, I guess I just won't care either way...🙂

Thanks for understanding!

Look, if they let more questions through on that thread, how long before people take it over again with constant emigration questions? You have to sympathize with the mods. It's not their job to sit there 24/7 watching to see if someone asks about working under the table or some other stupid question that was answered ages ago.

The answers are all in the old threads and that sticky at the top. Personally, I don't see an issue with it.
Take your question about the WH, for instance. In a way, it's a bit silly. A Working holiday is primarily for young people who want to travel and work and see Canada (that's why it's called a Working holiday, right?). It's basically similar to work and travel in USA. That kind of program isn't really designed for people traveling with kids.

Thanks, brightpuma. I’m glad you actually get the point of this thread and why we're doing it this way.

The discussion thread for the American diaspora living in Canada is officially open now that we've gathered all the useful links into one master topic. We had to shut down the others because they just turned into endless arguments and those repetitive "how do I move to Canada" questions that everyone keeps complaining about on the forum.

On top of that, you get a ton of people popping up with questions they could solve in a single click on Google or just by giving the Canadian Embassy a quick call.

After weighing all our options for a long time, ambermason16 and I decided this was the best way to handle things, and so far, it’s been working pretty smoothly without much drama.

Today's warnings were handed out after people started nitpicking the moderators again (here we go AGAIN) and drifting off-topic. I've mentioned several times before that this kind of thing isn't allowed, and if anyone has an issue, there's a PDF specifically for appeals, so the warnings shouldn't really come as a shock.

I hope that clears things up enough, and I don't really see any need to keep debating this.

I mean, I totally get it, and honestly, it’s true that about 95% of what gets asked here has already been answered, which makes repeating it feel pretty pointless...

But seriously, could someone just clarify one thing for me... if someone actually comes along with a legit, brand-new question—like maybe regarding some recent change to visa regulations or something similar—where are they even supposed to go to ask that?

I was actually chatting with Henry Moore2 about this exact thing, and she told me that on this Canadian social thread, you can totally drop questions even if they've been answered a million times before, or if they're super specific, or if you just can't find a single shred of info on Google or from the Embassy.

Alright, I went ahead and updated the clarification in the very first post, so hopefully everything should be crystal clear now regarding what this thread is actually about.

Just a heads-up for everyone: any users on this or any other thread in the diaspora section who start nitpicking the moderators or whining about "dictatorships" are going to get hit with instant warnings. If you just need to vent or blow off steam, go use the PZK.

It’s been months, maybe even years, that I haven't seen a single fresh question that hasn't already been answered in one of the last three threads. Or, if it's something really specific, you could just call the Embassy and talk to someone who actually works there.

If anyone ever does run into a real curveball, feel free to just drop it in the thread for the diaspora living in New York City.

I’m a bit confused—why was my thread about Canada locked? Is there some kind of rule now against talking about Canada?

I mean, I thought I laid out pretty clearly why the topic should stay open, yet here we are. It feels a little lopsided when one serious discussion gets shut down, while something totally mindless—like that "swallowing" thread (I think that’s how it was titled)—is allowed to run wild with ten different sequels, where people basically just post emojis or a couple of words just to hit their daily post limit.

If the thread is locked, how are we supposed to actually connect with people who are planning to move under these new regulations? How are we meant to find those bits of practical advice that you won't find on any official government website, but which actually make the whole emigration process manageable?

It feels like Canada is being singled out here, whereas everyone can talk freely about Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, and plenty of other places without an issue.

I’d really appreciate some answers to these questions—and please, let’s skip the generic canned responses. I'm looking for something specific.

Thanks!

I have to admit, I didn't spot that thread on the diaspora forum. Can you drop a link? ☕

As for everything else, it's all laid out clearly in this thread.

With all due respect, you guys are just contradicting yourselves now.

Henry Moore2 said:This thread is strictly for socializing.
Any trolling will be dealt with—strictly speaking—and if you have questions about moving, please look for info here.

(A big thanks to our resident gentleman for gathering all these links!)

Any questions regarding emigration in this thread will be deleted and/or result in a ban.

Enjoy!

ambermason16 said: The thread is open to anyone who wants to join in, whether they're Canadian or not. But the goal here is just hanging out and swapping casual info. Since the main topic is packed with links useful for anyone looking to move to Canada—plus two other massive threads that cover basically every question imaginable in extreme detail—we feel like the Canadians have officially done their part in keeping everyone informed.

At the same time, we're reiterating—this thread isn't meant for questions about emigration, immigration, visas, paperwork, jobs, or anything else that usually makes up 90% of the Canada-related chatter. Please read the PDF rules and use the resources already provided. Any "technical" questions posted here will be deleted and/or lead to a ban. It’s probably time for everyone to put in a little effort themselves. You have all the material right there.

Thanks.

First you say nothing about emigration is allowed, then you say it actually is (?!)

How am I supposed to know I won't get banned if I do end up asking something?

Henry Moore2 said:It’s been months, maybe even years, that I haven't seen a single fresh question that hasn't already been answered in one of the last three threads. Or, if it's something really specific, you could just call the Embassy and talk to someone who actually works there.

If anyone ever does run into a real curveball, feel free to just drop it in the thread for the diaspora living in New York City.

That's just not how it works, considering immigration rules shift almost every single year—think Working holiday visas, provincial programs, and all that jazz. When you deal with the Embassy, you get these incredibly brief, half-baked answers; they don't seem to have any interest in giving a meaningful response, they just parrot the URL of the official website like some kind of automated script.

Do you honestly believe that the rules for moving to America aren't going to change again?
Do you think the situation as it stood back at the end of 2012 is somehow final?

Where am I supposed to go to hear from people who are actually planning to move this year?

The one solitary thread about Canada has such a pathetic turnout, and frankly, it’s because of all your bans. The level of interest speaks for itself—you've got a whole thread dedicated to bans and strictness within the Canada topic... meanwhile, my thread, which was strictly about emigration, was shut down expressively fast, even though I had support from everyone who showed up there... I just don't get it.🤷

I went through all thirteen pages of your CHAT thread, and honestly, only one person on the forum is openly complaining—she's clearly annoyed by anything remotely American now that she’s settled in Canada, and she made it very clear she can't stand people asking her anything related to the moving process. (Though, I highly doubt she felt that way when *she* was the one scrambling for info back home—it's that classic mindset: "everyone help me when I need it, but don't bother me when I'm the one being asked"... but anyway, that's off-topic, so I'll stop!) A much larger group of people (including Canadians themselves) told you guys that this setup doesn't make sense, to which your response was basically that you don't know what to do or how to please everyone. Here's my suggestion: let this CHAT thread stay exactly as it is, but unlock my thread and let it be exclusively for emigration, just like I laid out in my opening post. That way, those of us still planning our move to Canada can access fresh information, while those who find immigrants annoying can stick to their own chat thread about the weather, nightlife, echoes, and other "vital" topics. (My blood pressure is starting to rise a bit as I type this, and I'm pretty exhausted, so bear with me.)

Look, if you’re going to quote someone, please just quote the whole thing. It’s like trying to understand a movie by watching a five-second clip—your point doesn't really hold water unless we see the full context. Until then, the decision stays unanimous.

There’s already a thread over there with all the links and responses.

Yeah, they agreed with you. But then, right in the very next post, some woman jumps in asking a question that's already been answered a dozen times. It's like, did she even bother reading the other threads? Or checking the official websites? Nothing. And it happens constantly. otherwise, admins usually need extra time to get back to you simply because, in like 95% of cases, they have to clear everything with the mods first.

The guy replied to my post but skipped half my questions—so naturally, I asked why he wasn't answering all of them.

If those kinds of posts are such a headache, just delete them. Besides, her question *did* get an answer, and honestly, those types of free riders would be ignored by most users on locked threads anyway... I don't see the issue. Personally, I just ignore them and move on.

As for going to Facebook—I don't even know how to react to that suggestion. I'm actually a bit shocked by that approach... is the goal here to foster actual quality discussion, or are you trying to drive people away?? A forum isn't just the admins and moderators; a forum is its users.

The longer I spend on this forum, the more I get the impression that the only thing that matters to you is inflating the member count. Whether people are inactive or permanently banned doesn't seem to matter—I've noticed we can't even delete our own profiles—as long as the database grows to attract advertisers, the actual core purpose of a forum like this becomes totally irrelevant.

And I'm still waiting for an explanation as to why Canada is being treated differently compared to Australia, New Zealand, and everywhere else. The reasons you give for locking threads could apply to almost any other discussion regarding emigration to those countries.

Why not just have two separate threads for Canada? One could be a casual chat for people who are already there—where the admins and mods claim everyone is just complaining about immigrants—and the other could be strictly about the emigration process itself. Then the users can decide which one they want to participate in... and I guarantee there would be way more activity in the emigration thread.

What kind of answer is that, really? You didn't actually address a single one of my questions... I mean, what’s even the point of this thread if nobody is going to answer anything?🤷

So, looking at this thread on employment in Canada—the first post was from back in 2007—and then there’s that other thread about emigration and living in Canada from 2003. Do you seriously think the laws, the regulations, or the visa programs haven't changed one bit between 2003 and 2012? We're talking about a nine-year gap here. It's a massive stretch. Honestly, if you ask the exact same question in 2003, 2007, or 2012, you aren't going to get the same answer twice. Things move fast.

Do you honestly think we’ve reached a point where the laws, regulations, and programs have finally stabilized enough to just lock this thread away by the end of 2012? Like—is everything actually said, done, and settled? I mean, I wonder if we're really at a stage where nothing else is going to shift... though, knowing how things go, that seems like a pretty big assumption to make.
I'm quoting a snippet of the post I'm responding to—but seriously, what’s the point of quoting entire posts like that?
But honestly, if that’s really what you’re calling an argument—well, here it is. Your entire post, laid out right in front of you.

Henry Moore2 The user said:Hey there, my fellow Canadians,

Since everyone seems to be complaining about the same old questions popping up over and over—not to mention all the trolling and how massive this whole thing has become—I figured I’d offer a little solution. Just a thought.

This thread is strictly for hanging out—just a place to kick back and chat.
Look, I’m going to be pretty clear about this—any trolling or unnecessary drama will be dealt with strictly. If you actually have questions regarding relocation or moving to the States, please go out and do your own research first. here.

Big thanks to the gentleman for doing all the legwork and gathering those links!

Just a heads-up—any questions regarding emigration posted in this thread are going to be deleted or flagged. Keeping things organized, I guess.

Enjoy yourselves!

Henry Moore2

EDIT: Just to clarify—regarding the questions... It’s honestly impossible to find an answer. Based on what we talked about in previous threads—or if you just do a quick Google search or give the embassy a call—it’s all pretty much cleared up.

So, I assume this is your way of saying you were a bit miffed that I didn't turn into this whole EDIT thing—which, let’s be honest, doesn't really tell us forum regulars much of anything, does it? It’s all a bit vague—I mean, what kind of criteria am I supposed to actually follow when I'm putting questions out there? Do you personally have some master list of every single question that’s been asked? Because, if you do, I definitely don't.

So, I went ahead and pulled some quotes from the folks who aren't exactly seeing eye to eye with you—just a little collection of the pushback from the very first page of this new thread about Canada.

Tudum said:So, am I still considered part of the inner circle here in the CHAT, or have I been officially kicked out?

Maybe we should just set up a North America chat instead?

Warm greetings from a chilly, sunny New York City

Otherwise, life is fine.

ambermason16 said:You know what? (And just to be clear—I’m talking about everyone participating in this thread, not just a specific few of you.) You all seem to be mourning the loss of certain topics, yet you haven't hesitated for a second to snap at every single question or insist—quite loudly, I might add—that everything has already been answered a hundred times over. Look, we aren't the Canadian Embassy. Even they don't spend their time fielding the kind of questions we get here. If anyone actually has questions regarding emigration, they can find the answers in the resources already provided—or, if any of the veteran members want to volunteer their PM inbox as a dedicated Q&A hub, by all means, go ahead. You asked for a CHAT thread, so now you have one, yet somehow it’s still not quite right. It's funny, really—you complain about being harassed by "stupid" questions, but once a solution is actually presented, it’s still not good enough.

These won't be "hot topics"—anyone can use the search bar or just click the links in my previous post. Questions posted here will be deleted and users may be penalized , and again—I'll say it once more—if someone is willing to answer them, just state clearly right here that people should reach out via PM, and the problem is solved. We aren't going to delete this post.

The real issue isn't that people ignore you. It's that most folks respond with irony, trolling, or just straight-up insults. And if they don't get an answer? They just keep asking the same thing over and over. It’s easier to post a question on a forum and wait for someone to do the legwork than it is to actually go look it up on Google. I mean, what is moving across the country really? A few thousand miles? People do it all the time. ☕

I honestly don't even know how to react to this on Facebook. I'm genuinely shocked by that kind of behavior. Is the goal here actually to have a quality discussion? Or is the aim just to drive people away from this place? A forum isn't defined by the admins or the moderators. A forum is the people who actually post on it.

Look, you realize I’m not a moderator or an admin, right? Just a regular user like you. As one forum member to another, if you want the real-time updates, just head over to the Facebook group. At least until the admins lose their minds and start nuking posts from people who can't manage to write more than two lines at a time. They show up every single day.

I’m still waiting on an answer. Why does it feel like Canada gets shortchanged compared to Australia, New Zealand, and everywhere else? All those reasons you gave for locking this thread? You can find them in pretty much any other discussion about moving to those countries.

It’s not even about discrimination at this point. From what I can see, she's just first in line. Australia and New Zealand will be next.

Why not just have two separate threads about Canada? One could be a general CHAT thread for people already living there—you know, the kind where admins and mods always claim everyone is just complaining about immigrants. Then, we have a second thread strictly for emigration. That way, people can choose which one they actually want to join. I guarantee more folks will head over to the emigration side.

It’s inevitable. We’re going to see another 200 questions a day asking how to apply for a Working holiday, where to find jobs, or how to deal with under-the-table work. It happens every time. Honestly, it just forces people who are already serious about making such a massive life change—because moving to Canada isn't exactly like a quick weekend trip to Denver—to actually do their homework and put in some effort to find the facts themselves.
Honestly, if you just take a look at everything linked in the top thread, you’ll pretty much have the full picture. For anything else, just skim through the last 40 or 50 pages of these closed threads. Makes sense, right?

Why ask me to quote your entire post if you weren't actually planning on answering any of my questions in the first place? It feels a bit rude, honestly...

Just be upfront and say this whole thread is just for show—that you're going to keep doing things your way regardless of what the rest of us on the forum think.

But do you actually grasp what this thread is for? It’s specifically for questions directed at the forum administration. If you aren't part of the staff, why jump in at all? Why play lawyer for them? I'm not making some grand deduction here to claim you're "just a user"—it's just common sense to assume the actual admins will be the ones answering on this specific thread.

You’re stepping in for them without even knowing the real reason behind their decisions, just guessing based on your own assumptions. 🙂

Honestly, I don't get how this administration allows anyone to just chime in and answer queries on their behalf... seriously, step up! This feels incredibly amateurish.

So, you think nobody responded because it was just the admins? Don't make me laugh. That's exactly what happens when people don't bother reading the thread before asking a question. 🙄

You're answering for them without even knowing the real reason behind their actions. Just jumping to conclusions based on your own assumptions? Why do that? 🙂

I’m just repeating what the moderators have probably already said ten times. What’s the point of them reaching out to you personally to repeat the same thing for the eleventh time? If I’m online, I can just give you the same answer myself. 🤷

I honestly don't get this administration. Why does it allow just anyone who feels like it to jump in and answer questions on their behalf? Seriously, get it together! This is pure amateur hour.

If I got anything wrong, someone please set me straight. 🤷
