Disney's live-action animated remakes

Finally, a dedicated mega-thread for all those Disney live-action adaptations born from their animated classics. I’m opening this because individual threads for every single movie—even when they get their own space here on the forum—rarely stretch past two or three pages, which frankly feels a bit pointless. This way, we can actually discuss, compare, and debate them all in one place—while also dissecting what we might expect from the upcoming slate (of which there seems to be an endless supply, if you look at the list below).

We're looking at the following films:

1996. 101 Dalmatians
2000. 102 Dalmatians
2010. Alice in Wonderland
2010. The Sorcerer's Apprentice
2014. Maleficent 2015
2015. Cinderella
2016. The Jungle Book (the new adaptation by Jon Favreau; plus, we have the Warner Bros. - Mowgli version coming soon)
2016. Alice Through the Looking Glass (the sequel to the 2010 adaptation)
2017. Beauty and the Beast 2017
2018. Christopher Robin (based on Winnie the Pooh)

As for the upcoming adaptations on the horizon:
2018. The Nutcracker (from the fantasy catalog)
2019. Dumbo
2019. Aladdin 2019
2019. Cruella
2019. The Lion King (also directed by Favreau)
2020. Mulan (now, this is one I am actually looking forward to 🎉)
2020. Maleficent 2 (with Julia returning)

So, it looks like we'll be facing a massive wave of these adaptations very soon. 🍿

I really have a soft spot for those live-action remakes that actually stay true to the original animation... It’s such a relief when they don't just take a classic and turn it into some completely unrelated story, like that Beauty and the Beast situation, though I have to admit, I couldn't help but watch that one too...

I've spent quite a bit of time sitting through those kinds of adaptations...

Yeah, it's just another one of those Disney's remakes—they seem to be churning them out endlessly these days.

I haven't sat through their entire catalog, but honestly, the 2016 version really blew me away. Next year, we're getting Mowgli based on that same book, though word is it’ll be much darker than this Disney's take.

I haven't sat down to watch every single one they've put out, but I have to say, the 2016 version really blew me away. It’s actually quite striking. Honestly, I think it's definitely better than that 2016 one... I don't know how to explain it, but the 2016 version just gives me this lingering sense of unease, almost like it's a bit unsettling to watch... 🙂

I really hope they decide to do a live-action version of The Princess and the Frog...
