Right off the bat, we meet Caesar (Edward Norton), this charming young businessman who basically lives life in the fast lane, leaning hard on his good looks and high status—you know, the whole flashy cars and beautiful women routine.

His latest one-night stand is Nora. But Caesar isn't really the type to handle intimacy, so he tries to distance himself from Nora, who turns out to be pretty intense and refuses to just let things go.

She ends up making a scene at Caesar's birthday party. To deal with the drama, he decides to use Sophia (Penélope Cruz)—who happens to be his best friend's potential girlfriend—just to get this troublesome ex out of his hair.

The next morning, Caesar finds Nora waiting in a car outside his apartment. She manages to shove him into the vehicle and, in a total fit of jealousy and madness, slams into a wall. She doesn't make it, while he survives the crash but ends up with his face hideously disfigured.

To top it all off, he ends up behind bars facing murder charges, and even Sophia, whom he’s already started seeing, can't look past his appearance to stay with him.

I'd love to hear what you guys think about this movie. It's been a long time since I've seen one this good. 😍

I totally agree—it’s great, though as soon as I started watching, I realized just how much of a mess the American remake, Vanilla Sky, actually is. Honestly, I ended up passing out right before the end last night, so I didn't even see how it wrapped up... Could you please shoot me a DM explaining how it ends and how everything gets untangled?
I was actually paying close attention this time (I was way too young to grasp what was going on when I first saw Vanilla Sky), but I just drifted off at the most crucial moment.

Honestly, what is there left to say? This thing is so incredible (and genuinely good) that someone actually needs to summarize the ending for you? Welcome to the modern age—just download the movie and finish watching it.

I caught it last time it was airing on NBC. Honestly, just a stroke of genius...

So, how did you guys actually wrap your heads around this movie? Everyone seems to have such a different take on it. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

It’s classic sci-fi, I suppose, though it is certainly told through a somewhat unconventional lens, but then again, I guess that was likely the director's intention all along.

It actually had me in tears within the first thirty minutes. Up until the point I stopped watching—which was about three-quarters of the way through—it was working perfectly, and I was more than happy to trash the remake starring Tom Cruise. Just to clarify for the busybody who seems determined to gatekeep this entire subforum, since apparently every single argument needs a rebuttal 😉

@lonehawk8, thanks for the DM 🙂

I found it pretty gripping, though I honestly got so lost that I couldn't tell where reality ended and the dream began. Here’s how I pieced it all together: there was a car crash involving Nora, she passed away, and he was left physically broken. He started having those dreams that night while he was running toward Sophia's place, where he ended up staying overnight.
What are your thoughts?

Like I mentioned before, I watched this a few months back, so my memory of the specifics has faded a little... but overall, it was exceptionally well-executed, and personally, I consider it a true masterpiece.

Well, by the end of the movie, that "avatar" figure, E. L. E, explains that his perception was essentially hijacked the morning after his intoxication.

Yeah, if you ask me, nothing actually happened after the drinking binge. It was all just a dream, and then in the morning, Sophia finds him out front and tells him, "Open Your Eyes."🤣

What do you think?

E. L. E explained to him what actually went down after that morning, so they decided to pick that exact morning to start the virtual reality sequence, which wraps up right at the end of the movie.

Yeah, but wait—how are Anthony, Sophia, and his friend supposed to be fake? 🙄

They aren't fake—they actually happened—but I suppose they feel fake because those shared experiences don't really exist anymore once that morning passes, especially since the ending takes place 150 years later.

I think I see it much more simply than that. 🤷

I suppose the most straightforward answer is actually the correct one. And it really is the right way to look at it, mostly because that's how everything is explained during the movie's final scenes.

Look, the remake, the little details, and all that other fluff don't really matter here, so I’m going to ask you one more time—since you haven't actually clarified anything and I'm still sitting here completely baffled. Was the movie really such a life-changing masterpiece that you now need someone to sit down and recap the rest of it for you? I mean, why even bother watching the movie all the way to the end?Look, it's not like we're living in the 80s where you have to rely on NBC for your entertainment. Besides, trying to recap the rest of Open Your Eyes is basically impossible—it just doesn't make any sense at this point, even if I were trying to type it out in a PDF. Honestly, I bet if someone tried to summarize a novel over on a literature forum that actually blew them away, the reaction would be exactly the same, if not even more intense. We always see these requests to spoil the ending; usually, it’s just because people didn't vibe with the title or they're just too lazy to sit through the rest of the movie. It’s really no surprise, honestly. I'm sorry, I didn't quite catch that. It looks like you might have sent an incomplete message. Feel free to drop whatever you were thinking about whenever you're ready. That’s strange. 😁 Like I mentioned before, this is actually my first time having the chance to dive into something like this around here.

Just a general observation here—and please don't take this personally, I don't even know you well enough to be picking a fight with you, so let's keep it civil. But just imagine if someone fell asleep right before the end of Kubrick's Odyssey, only to wake up completely losing their mind because what they just witnessed was so incredibly breathtaking. So you're actually asking me to sit here and summarize the rest of the story for you? That’s a bold move, honestly. I mean, I appreciate the enthusiasm, but I’m really not sure I have the stamina to be your personal audiobook narrator today.. 😕 I’d honestly just send him straight to the principal's office—and if things got really heated, I might even consider reaching for a ruler, depending on how much we actually like the guy. It’s pure blasphemy, really; just a textbook definition of being lazy. 😬

I’m really not trying to start anything here. 😁 It’s just that, you know that feeling when you watch an incredible movie and you just have this desperate urge to share it with people, especially those close to you? You want to use the movie as this shared experience—sort of "forcing" them to sit down and watch it together, and then having a big debate about it afterward. If I just sit here and dump the whole plot on you, the entire magic of actually watching it is lost, don't you think?

Something else is bothering me, though—did you at least try to convince neonorca4 to finish the rest of the movie in that private message? Please tell me you did. 😁

I really enjoyed that movie. I can't recall every single detail, but to me, Vanilla Sky is just as good. Even if it feels a bit "scattered," it has its perks—for instance, it skips > that murder at the end spoiler>>, which felt unnecessary in the original version. Plus, there's that scene in Times Square.

There is one specific detail from the original that I noticed, and I think it’s vital: > the fact that Sophia never actually fell for Caesar. Their romance only truly blossoms within that "dream." He also keeps a friend he lost in the real world, and all the chaos happening in his dream seems like his own conscience punishing him for his past actions—like how Nora keeps haunting him... and so on. spoiler>>
