Life would be a whole lot easier if things actually worked this way 😬

Amazon is supposed to be your go-to for comparing prices and seeing what's out there, but let’s be realβ€”it doesn't cover everything and it's often off the mark. On top of that, you've got these shady companies that list dirt-cheap prices just to bait you into clicking, only for you to get to their actual site and find out the price is totally different.

Go read the megathread for anyone looking to buy a laptop and try to answer as many of the questions as possible. Once you do that, we can try to hunt down a decent deal for you. Honestly, don't try to wing this alone; there's a razor-thin line between a laptop that actually works and a total piece of junk, and sometimes they cost exactly the same...

I'm just trying to figure out where the best deals are hiding. A buddy of mine is looking to build a PC and asked for my take. We both know our way around hardware specs, so picking the right parts isn't the issue here. When I put my own rig together, I spent ages scrolling through Amazonβ€”though I think I eventually pulled the trigger at Micro Center, but that was a while ago. I'm sure there are certain retailers known for being pricey and others where you can actually snag a bargain. I figured I'd ask around here for some specific names of those budget-friendly spots, just to save myself from wasting more hours hunting on Amazon.

Yeah, just like swiftbear7 mentioned, sites like PriceGrabber don't actually show you the full picture. You really have to dig through a ton of clutter to find anything better than those big-name retailers who just hike up their prices whenever they feel like it. It’s kind of funny how companies like Amazon work, tooβ€”they might drop prices over the weekend just to grab attention, but then by Monday morning, everything is back up, and suddenly they aren't even competitive anymore. Like, they'll offer free shipping, but then you realize the base price is so inflated that the "deal" totally disappears. I think Best Buy usually has some decent offers if you look closely. I was actually hunting for something myself recently and noticed on IBM that they had some pretty interesting deals; some devices were actually hundreds of dollars cheaper there compared to everywhere else!
It’s honestly super helpful to use Opera and install the PriceGrabber plug-in. Once you pull up a page with a specific price, it immediately pops up other offers so you can see if you're actually getting a good deal!
