Why 26?😕
Shouldn't that be 24?🤔

I'm guessing back when Matthew Young35's criteria were being drafted, there actually were 26 cars on the grid...

To be more precise, that was when Matthew Young35's calculation program was actually being developed.😁

It doesn't really matter; those things are easy enough to adjust.

The real point is this: I believe there is absolutely no reason not to adopt a better, more precise scoring system. We shouldn't accept the excuse that the current one is "easier to calculate," because that simply isn't true anymore.
I'm not just pushing my own proposal here; I am more than willing to write a new calculation program based on any other principle, provided it is superior.
Now that I've actually run the numbers—which took me just under an hour, despite some initial stumbling, so not too bad—I've even come up with a few small ideas on how to make the process even faster.

It would be absolutely perfect if we could actually factor in the time gaps...

For example, if you rank someone 6th but they actually finish 12th, the system should subtract those time deficits accordingly. And vice versa...
Since the maximum gap is just one lap, you'd automatically know what the worst-case negative impact could be...

The only thing left to work out is how to handle a DNF—maybe just tack on an extra penalty, like 10% of the total laps remaining at the time of the crash...

Honestly, asking people to track down specific time gaps seems like a bit much.
The math isn't even the hard part; the real issue is whether anyone would actually care enough to bother typing out those kinds of detailed predictions.

Nah, that's not it...

People should just stick to what they've been doing, just picking positions, because trying to guess gaps is basically a freaking lottery..
The calculation itself would have to factor in the time gaps..

Say I predict Vettel 3, but he ends up finishing 8th..
You’d take the gap at 8th minus the gap at 3rd (regardless of who was actually there) and that gives you negative points for Vettel.

Or if I pick Maldonado 12, but he somehow claws his way to 1st..
Then you’d take the gap at 12th, subtract the leader's gap (which is 0), and those are your points..

I was trying to run these numbers as an example, but I hit a massive wall because the math just falls apart when you realize they don't provide exact times for anyone a lap or more behind. It makes the whole thing useless...

1-Vettel 67.5 - 0 = 67.5
2-Button 85.2 - 3.1 = 82.1
3-Raikkonen 0
4-Hamilton 78.1 - 14.7 = 63.4
5-Grosjean 14.7 -64.6 = 49.9
6-Schumacher - dnf
7-Webber 85.2 - 77.9 = 7.3
8-Rosberg 77.9 - 78.1 = 0.2
9-Perez - dnf
10-Kobayashi 85.2 - 64.6 = 19.6
11-Hulkenberg
12-Alonso
...

I can't help but blame the lazy FIA for being too incompetent to actually log the precise gaps...

There is so much potential here to refine this system. I’ve actually been seriously considering whether introducing logarithms into Matthew Young35's criteria might yield better results—perhaps by placing a higher premium on positions closer to first place...
... though, in all honesty, that might be overkill.

Ultimately, it would be beneficial if everyone could grasp the rules clearly from the very start.

stormybadger8 said:Look, it’s obvious. This season has been a total mess.
That’s why I started that thread about rethinking the points system and maybe switching to Matthew Young35's method next year.😉

So, what’s actually the issue?
When Max was drafting those rules, hitting the 11th through 16th place bracket was legitimately a nightmare.
I think that’s what he was aiming for.

Because you basically had predictable patterns:
4 cars from two teams in 1st-3rd
4 cars from two teams in 4th-10th
6 cars from three teams in 17th-24th

Everything else was a toss-up, but those specific groups were practically constants for years.
Predicting positions 11-16 was way harder than guessing the top spots.

But this season? There aren't really any constants left—aside from the usual bottom six drivers from three teams—so the old logic doesn't even apply anymore.
But hey, it is what it is.🤷
Changing the scoring system mid-season makes zero sense unless we come up with something better that everyone can actually get behind.

In the meantime, I'm just waiting to see the results based on the systems proposed by Matthew Young35 and Dorian.
Mainly so I can figure out where the discrepancies are and why.

Personally, I’m against making major rule changes while the season is already underway.

I didn't even realize we were expecting results using Matthew Young35's method. Alright, I'll get started on that.
My apologies if this takes a while; it's my first time doing this.

Perhaps it would be wise to open a thread regarding next season's regulations right now? I suspect it would spark a pretty lively debate.

Not a bad idea.🙂
I need to check in with the rest of my mod team to see what they think, dig through some old posts on the subject, and then I'll spin up a new thread.

Personally, though, I love the idea of keeping that discussion in its own separate thread instead of cluttering this one.🙂

As for these results, just post them however you want. I'll compile everything into one big pile tomorrow.
It'll actually be pretty useful to see how those two systems stack up against each other.🙂

Matthew Young35 said:To be fair, Karlospeedi actually has a terrifyingly accurate forecast, but he’s missing two drivers.
This is exactly why I suggested we implement a rule where you can lose up to 5 or 10 negative points. You could have the best forecast of anyone else, but if you're missing those two drivers, you end up dead last in the rankings. Doesn't that seem a bit unfair?

Look, in this madness, history shows us that anything can happen, so let's say it's possible:

TOTAL : 114

Right, I forgot to include
6-Perez 14
8-Michael Schumacher 16

And that's how I win this race, because now I'm sitting at: 86+5+5= 96😉
Just imagine the absolute chaos if that actually happened.
People would literally lose their minds.😉

Scenario 2
Someone might think they're being clever by gaming the system—maybe only picking 10 or 5 drivers—and then you get something like:
14x5= 70 / 19x5 =95
Suddenly, winning the round becomes way too easy.😉
From what I can see, most predictions land somewhere in the 110-120 point range.

So, even if the 24-driver rule looks harsh, I think it's fair.
Of course, everyone's going to complain, and if you look at any of these lists, it seems like you could have a killer prediction just by dropping one or two names.
And all it takes is one driver to DNF, someone forgets to list them, and suddenly we've got total mayhem.

This won't work unless we put a hard cap on points—say 10, 12, or 15—for both the drivers you pick and the ones you miss.
The only thing that makes sense is having a maximum point limit for everyone, regardless of whether they were listed or not.😉

After giving it some thought, I’ve come to the conclusion that the most balanced approach would be to cap negative points at about three-quarters of the total driver count.

Oh man, I didn't actually list those two drivers because I totally messed up when I was copying everything over! 🤷

I honestly don't think this cap is a good idea..

We’re all going to end up stuck with a massive pile of negative points at some point..
And look, that’s just part of the game..

Let's say the limit is set at 3 out of 4 points, or maybe 18..
In that case, my prediction stays at 102 because I picked Michael Schumacher to finish fourth, but he DNF'd, so I took the 18-point hit. Meanwhile, someone else could be sitting at 101 because they guessed Michael Schumacher would take second, but since he dropped out, they couldn't lose more than 18 points..

Suddenly, their "prediction" looks better on paper just because of a technicality..

I’ve moved part of the discussion over, specifically the thread regarding the new points system.

You can pick up where you left off right here in this thread.
Also, I wanted to see if Matthew Young35 is interested in being the 2013 season host, and if he’d be down to run the championship using his proposed scoring system.

Same goes for Dorian, who pitched his own setup, as well as our current Host and anyone else willing to step up and run things.

If you want to be a Host, here’s the deal:
- Post your application for the 2013 season host position in this thread (deadline is July 1, 2012).
- Submit your proposed rulebook for the 2013 season.
- During the 2013 season, you'll handle tallying and posting results for predictions, individual races, and overall season standings—basically making the tables and doing whatever else is needed to keep the competition running.
- You’ll be the final word on any "gray area" situations not explicitly covered by the rules.
A Host can have assistants to help with the workload, but the actual posting of results falls on them, and they're responsible for tracking everything down.

Once the poll opens, players are expected to:
- Vote for the Host and their specific rules (the poll opens when applications close on July 1, 2012, and runs for 30 days).
- Respect the outcome of the vote, regardless of who you voted for. (The winner is whoever gets the majority of player votes; votes from burner accounts or people who don't participate or check the F1 PDFs won't count).
- Follow the Host's instructions throughout the season.
- Abide by the Host's decisions regarding any disputed calls.

It’s actually pretty interesting to pit these two systems against each other using a real example. You can really see how different the results turn out.😉

* competitor Karlospeedi was awarded two sets of 26 points because he's currently missing two drivers from his roster.

The numbers in parentheses in Bjesomar's system show the difference in rank compared to the current system.

It's pretty obvious that bad predictions—the ones where you leave drivers out—get absolutely hammered here.
Also, it's kind of weird that people with a decent amount of correct positions aren't even close to being good under Bjesomar's system compared to the current one. You'd expect the opposite, right? They should be doing better, not worse.😕

Not much swinging around this week, honestly. There just weren't many FL or PP hits to trigger anything.

Actually, it isn't surprising at all.
The reason is simple: the current system provides extra rewards for hitting exact positions. In my scoring method, there are no such bonuses. Beyond perhaps the top few spots, landing an exact position is nothing more than pure luck. After all, can anyone truly predict whether a mediocre driver in a subpar car will finish 15th or 17th?
