Can someone—maybe the resident expert—explain this to me. If the first Grand Prix was back in 1950, how on earth is the fifth Monaco GP listed as being held in 1933?

And how does the thirty-fourth Monaco GP end up happening in 1978?

How is that even possible?

Look, we’re all reasonable people here. We should be able to make sense of things—especially stuff we claim to be certain about, like the "official" start date of 1950.

I'd actually love to hear the expert's take on this one.

I mean, someone please walk me through this logic. If the very first Grand Prix took place back in the Inaugural season 1950, how on earth does it make sense that the fifth Monaco Grand Prix was held way back in 1933?

And how is it even possible that the thirty-fourth Monaco Grand Prix happened in 1978?

Seriously, how does that work?

Look, we're all reasonable people here—surely we can try to make sense of these discrepancies. Especially when certain folks are so incredibly stubborn about sticking to that 1950 starting point.

I would genuinely love to hear an explanation from the experts on this one.

The first official Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix was indeed held in 1950.

As for the 1978 date—they were likely counting all the various GPs held in Monaco overall (keeping in mind there was a hiatus during WW2, plus cancellations in '49, '51, and '52), so the math actually kind of checks out if you look at it that way.

They were probably thinking about all the GPs held in Monaco total—since things were paused during WW2 and they skipped '49, '51, and '52—so I guess that adds up somehow.

Show me where on any of those posters it actually says "Formula 1"

And tell me if an official Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix was even run in 1952.

The "Formula 1" championship didn't even exist until 1981. So, you could turn yourself upside down and still wouldn't find a way to say the first official Formula 1 Grand Prix happened in 1950. Let alone 1952.

It’s all right there. If 1985 was the 43rd, then 1950 couldn't possibly be the first by any logic at all.

Duh. Obviously. They meant the total count—whatever. It doesn't matter what you call the championship. A Grand Prix is a Grand Prix.

Whether it was run with Formula 1 cars, Formula 2 cars, sports cars, etc., etc.

It’s a shame they didn't put Senna or Raikkonen on the poster. Maybe then jadeseal7 would actually get where you're coming from.

Well, if he drove his 34th race back in 1976, then it makes perfect sense that by 1985, he was at number 43. I feel like I’ve already walked through this logic—come on now, don't mess with me! Just grab a calculator and do the math yourself.

What I meant was the total count, including all those seasons where things were interrupted. Everything you need is right there on the internet; if you don't know, just give Google a quick search. 😁

Check this out. An F1 car compared to an actual F1 car.

And this was back in 1948. In Monaco!

How on earth is Raikkonen going to be on an '85 poster? Honestly, Jason, you clearly haven't a clue what you're talking about. ☕

As someone who loves Formula 1, I really should have known better—back in the day, they didn't just roll out a brand-new chassis every single year like they do now...

I said total, including the cancellations. It's all over the internet—if you don't know, just Google it. 😁

So yeah, the total is right. But then why does the opening post say 1950???

Someone explain that to me.

Inaugural season 1950

Gonna go ahead and use a quote from my esteemed colleague here

little loser said:🤣🤣

You actually believe Bernie Ecclestone's statements?

Hahashahhahhhahhaha,......

The Inaugural season was 1981

Go ahead—check it yourself. On all these posters (which I definitely didn't draw—God forbid, I have zero artistic talent)—nowhere does it say Formula 1.

ruggedhawk20 said:So, all in all, yeah. But then why does the opening post mention 1950???

You'll have to walk me through that logic here.

Well, it’s simply because the thread starter didn't specify they were referring to the first GP held under the modern Formula 1 regulations—rather than just the very first GP ever hosted in Monaco.

jadeseal7 said:The OP didn't specify this was the first GP under current F1 rules—just that it was the first GP held in Monaco.

Fine, then go ahead and cite 1948

since the 1948 Monaco Grand Prix used cars built strictly according to Formula 1 regulations anyway.

No matter how you slice it, it's true.

And if you want to make things even more ridiculous, that site where you're copy-pasting Bernie Ecclestone's revisionist history actually has a massive logical flaw.

image

Basically, they claim the race started in "1950," yet there's no track record listed. If there’s no track record, the race hasn't actually happened. I mean, come on—if they were racing, there would be some kind of record, right?

ruggedhawk20 said:Well, they should probably just point to 1948

because the 1948 Monaco Grand Prix was actually run in cars built specifically according to Formula 1 regulations

No matter how you slice it, the logic is flawed here...

And if we want to make matters even worse—the very page where you've copy-pasted Bernie's revisionist take on history actually contains a glaring logical error itself

image

Basically, the argument claims the races only started in "1950," yet there's no track record listed. If there isn't a track record, then technically the race hasn't ever been run, right? Because if it had, there would be at least some kind of lap record to show for it. Makes sense, doesn't it?

Lap record 1:14.439 (Michael Schumacher, Ferrari, 2004)

I'm struggling to see what the issue is there...
