Since we recently decided that trashing a user's specific moves is basically the same as insulting them personally—which makes sense, right?—I was wondering does intentionally misspelling or twisting someone's username count as an insult toward that user too?

Also, could the admin team walk us through the reasoning behind this stance? Just a few sentences would go a long way in making sure everyone stays on the same page during discussions.

One last thing—if messing with nicknames is officially considered an insult, does that rule apply to the entire site, or just certain sub-forums? If there are any exceptions to the rule, please let us know.

Thanks!

Well, I guess it really just depends on how bad the misspelling is.

Brian Edwards78 said:And one last thing, if—by some chance—this kind of intentional username twisting is actually viewed as harassment,

You should probably take a look at the rules in this PDF:

rustydrifter10 said:• In your opening post, please provide a specific reason along with an explanation, and make sure to include links to the posts in question.

• We can't resolve vague threads where the actual issue isn't clear, so those are subject to being locked.

Moving forward, we're going to need concrete details for everything.

Thanks.

If someone is intentionally butchering your handle—or anyone else's—just to be a jerk or mock them, I’d hand out a warning. It might not technically be "harassment," but I'd definitely drop a custom ban for that kind of behavior.

Rocky said:You got flagged for trolling, when really you just offended some user who hadn't even breathed in your direction—you called her primitive...

darkhawk said:That’s just not true. I mean, if you slap "De-" onto my handle, suddenly I’m an "anti-civilizer"—and since the opposite of civilization is primitivism, isn't that right?

Rocky said:You basically forced this condescending nickname on yourself, and that dictates how you act. Personally, I don't see anything wrong with the prefix "De-" itself.

It’s absolutely wonderful how perfectly in sync you all are. You draft the rules, then you selectively enforce them only when it suits whoever happens to be glancing at the handbook at that exact moment—otherwise, you behave like total savages.

This forum has always suffered from a skewed moderation team, but what we’ve been seeing lately is just beyond the pale of good taste. Let me point out one thing: the user who slapped that "De-" prefix on my name walked away without a single penalty, which has clearly emboldened everyone else to keep doing it. But, of course, there’s a catch.

• The conduct guidelines for the Politics subforum apply to the use of derogatory nicknames for both forum members and third parties. Maliciously distorting names like: Sranjo (Harmon), Kradimir (Kradimir), Smranader (Ivo), and similar variations will not be tolerated, nor will the malicious distortion of forum members' handles. Furthermore, to maintain a civilized debate, it is advisable to avoid expressions that could be considered offensive when discussing public figures. Such posts will not be tolerated, and moderators reserve the right to issue sanctions, particularly for uncivilized posts.

That rule is applied whenever and however it feels convenient for someone. Not only did the moderator fail to actually apply the rule here, but the administration completely ignored my entire appeal. During that process, I was met with false accusations, arrogance, and extreme rudeness from a moderator who continues to moderate regularly today without facing any consequences whatsoever.

The moderation on this forum is bottom-tier; they don't even attempt to fix mistakes anymore—they just let things slide.

rustydrifter10 said:It really depends on how much you twist the nickname.

Let's just say the name is Gica. 🤷

I honestly think the way you want to handle sanctions is a total miss—I mean, it shouldn't be up to the mods to decide if twisting someone's handle is offensive or not, right? Their job is just to step in when people are clearly messing with names on purpose. It’s exactly what Sophia Thomas7 was getting at. At its most basic level, it's trolling, and anything beyond that is straight-up disrespect.

As for the rules themselves, they seem pretty clear to me—it's just the way they're being interpreted that feels totally inconsistent.
Constructive threads with suggestions are always welcome and anyone can jump in as long as they make solid points and follow the rules.

🙂

So, the big question here is how we judge an insult: Is it up to the mod to guess if a user is actually offended, or should the user report it via Trokutić, or should the mod just objectively penalize any blatant disrespect?

Personally, I’m leaning toward a mix of the last two—it feels more balanced to have both the user's input and the mod's objective eye, don't you think? That's just how it should work, anyway.

I actually brought up a similar point over six months ago: . But there was zero answer regarding how insults should be handled. It feels like they're always dodging the issue instead of just setting clear guidelines for everyone's benefit.

But look, let me try to break down why your "moderator discretion" philosophy is a bit flawed.

Picture this: you and I are debating, I don't know, Nazi avatars or propaganda in signatures. We're on completely different pages here—you don't really get the subject matter but you have the power to ban people, while I know my stuff but only deal with bans when I'm the one receiving them.

We're going back and forth, and then you claim all WWII German soldiers were Nazis and that having a Goebbels quote in a signature is fine, but a soldier's avatar isn't. In this scenario, let's say I lose my cool and start mocking your lack of knowledge by calling you "Gica, seriously, stop talking nonsense."

Under your version of moderation, you'd only ban me if *you* felt insulted by me calling you "Gica." But what if you aren't offended? Does that mean the comment just slides? (Hello, we both know it wouldn't, and I'd definitely catch a penalty, but this is just a thought experiment to show the flaw!)

According to Sophia Thomas7's view—which I'm with on this one—that comment gets a 45-point hit for being insulting. Period. There's no debate about whether you were personally offended or not. It doesn't matter to her because she's just objectively moderating and refusing to let people mock usernames. Simple and fair.

Hey, can the admins please finally make a call on how we're handling people insulting or twisting nicknames?
It would be awesome if the forum rules got an update too—just so everyone actually knows where they stand.

Based on Sophia Thomas7's vision—which I'm totally on board with—a comment like that earns 45 points for harassment. There’s no need for a long debate over whether you felt insulted or not. It doesn't even matter to him because he’s just objectively moderating and making sure nobody makes fun of other users' handles. It’s straightforward and fair.[/B]

Whether it would be a ban for harassment or a custom warning for derailing the conversation depends, but 45 points? That's a lock.

If someone called darkhawk a "jerk" (like in those PDFs where I show up), I'm pretty sure he'd issue a ban for harassment. If someone were doing some kind of mockery parade—not necessarily insulting the handle itself, but intentionally twisting it—he’d probably hit them with a custom warning. If someone calls him "Not-darkhawk" just once, he probably wouldn't ban them, but if they keep pushing it... well, damn, it's obvious you aren't there to talk, you're just there to stir the pot.

To me, it makes sense. Generally speaking, I wouldn't even bother getting involved in an argument about whether something is an inside joke or who actually took offense.

Matthew Anderson said:If someone actually had the nerve to call him "Uncivilized"—just once—they’d probably walk away without even getting a ban... or maybe just a slap on the wrist.

I honestly don't know where to start with this mess—it’s just one long, tangled web of nonsense—but let's try to untangle it. First off, I have to address what Michelle Alvarez8 was saying earlier, because frankly, it was completely off base. You can't just throw out half-baked theories and expect everyone to nod along like we're in some sort of mindless cult. It’s exhausting! And then there’s the whole situation with the local legislation—this ridiculous attempt at regulation that feels more like a power grab than actual policy. It reminds me of those old, outdated laws they used to struggle with back in the day—you know, the kind of stuff that makes you wonder if the people in charge are even living in the same century as the rest of us. It’s frustrating, really—deeply, fundamentally frustrating. Anyway, I digress. The point is, we need to look at the facts, not the emotional outbursts. If we want any semblance of progress, we have to stop acting like children throwing tantrums in a playground. We need substance. We need logic. And most importantly, we need to stop pretending that everything is fine when clearly, it isn't. It’s just not.

That post was completely pointless—honestly, there wasn't a single useful thing in it besides someone tacking my handle, De, onto the end of it.

That is just a textbook ad hominem—pure trolling and a blatant distortion of a username. Honestly, that isn't even the core issue here; the real problem lies in how the moderator went and explained it:

Rocky said:You went out of your way to pick such an imperatively patronizing nickname—it’s practically your entire persona at this point. Honestly, though? I don't see what the big deal is regarding the "De" prefix. It’s hardly a crime.

It’s honestly laughable—you see people getting banned or wiped out over absolute nonsense, provided that nonsense happens to clash with the moderators' precious little idols—yet when others who share the exact same views break every single rule in the book, nothing ever happens. Not a peep. It’s pure hypocrisy. And this is just one tiny, pathetic example of the chaos being driven by Rocky and a few other mods running the show over there.

You just sit there in your little bubble of delusion and hold onto it if you must—but let’s be real here. Both you and I know that post would have been flagged instantly. Honestly, one has to wonder if a moderator who fails to see anything controversial in that kind of rhetoric even deserves to stay in power. Especially when we all know the blatant bias involved—if I were darkhawk, openly championing leftist ideas, any user foolish enough to call me De would be dealt with immediately. It's a joke.

So, we can talk all day about rules, consistency, and "objective criteria"—as if those things actually exist here—but let’s get to the real heart of the rot. The absolute worst part of this entire circus? There are zero consequences for the moderators. None. Zilch. And you just know the next batch of mods will follow right in their footsteps. It’s a complete farce—it reminds me of that old saying about why a dog licks itself... well, you know the rest. It's just mindless, repetitive nonsense.

darkhawk said:There wasn't anything in that post other than adding my handle, De-

It’s just a classic ad hominem attack—pure trolling and messing with my username.

Look, I gave you a very direct answer, didn't I? Personally, I don't see a single post like that as being problematic. If this kept up, I’d be handing out warnings. As it stands, I'd just delete this one.

So, please, don't try to lump me in with "the rest of them." Thanks.

Hey darkhawk,

I’m asking you—as kindly as I can—to please move your appeal regarding the ban and the moderator over to the proper thread. Look, I totally get where you're coming from and why you feel this was unfair, really I do—but at the end of the day, having a clear, consistent policy on insults and nickname-mocking is just way more important for keeping this community healthy, don't you think?

Thanks for understanding.

Or rather, it depends on whose username is being targeted by the distortion... ☕

Matthew Anderson said:If someone is intentionally twisting your handle or anyone else's just to mock them or turn it into some kind of public spectacle, I’d hand out a warning. It isn't necessarily about the insult itself, but more about the act of using a custom tag to facilitate that kind of behavior...

Unfortunately, not every moderator shares that perspective, especially over in the American football boards...

I've seen just about everything on this forum, but I don't think I've ever witnessed such blatant, sadistic behavior being silently sanctioned by the moderation team...

It’s truly hitting rock bottom...

Matthew Anderson said:Whether they'd get a ban for insults or a warning to cool down the debate depends on the situation, but 45 points would definitely be enough.

If someone calls darkhawk a derogatory name (like in the PDFs where I'm mentioned), I’m pretty sure he’d issue a ban for harassment. If someone is just messing around with his name—not being outright offensive, but intentionally twisting it—he’d probably just give a warning. If someone called him 'Uncivilized' once, he likely wouldn't ban them, but if they kept pushing it, well, you know, it's obvious they aren't there to talk, just to stir the pot.

It makes sense to me. Personally, I wouldn't even get involved trying to figure out if it's an inside joke or who's actually offended.

I'm wondering if it's even worth reporting when people twist someone else's username in chat threads—like using "finger of fate" over in the Lonely Hearts subforum. Especially since the moderators don't monitor those specific threads that closely, so they might miss the subtle nuances in how users interact on those kinds of topics.

Look, I’ve said this a few times now: if you're having issues in the chat, just report it. You want me to drop a link to that post?

I’m not hijacking anything. 🙂
A few weeks ago, I was actually looking for answers to exactly what you asked in your opening post, but I just don't feel as bold about posting on the main boards like I used to... 😢

If I recall correctly, I've only seen maybe three cases in the last ten years where someone was penalized for misquoting a username, and none of those happened in the American politics subforum. 🤔

So, does that rule even apply to the whole site, or not? 🤷

EDIT: Before I get snapped at with a ban, I should mention that I already sent a detailed message to the moderator explaining my specific issue and question privately. 🙂

Man, it’s just the same old story. They’re clearly just sweeping everything under the rug here—classic move, right? But hey, if you want to dig into anything specific, just ask! That’s what we’re actually here for. 👍

Could someone be a pal and explain the logic behind getting this post banned?
It was flagged for harassment—even though the post doesn't actually call out any specific user. To me, banning stuff like this just makes zero sense. 🤷

EDIT:
DISCLAIMER for those who might be a little slow on the uptake: This isn't an appeal against the ban. I'm telling you, this isn't an appeal.

The whole "harassment" excuse feels totally off since they didn't even call out a specific user by name in the post. To me, handing out bans like this just makes zero sense. 🤷
Look, you don't actually have to drop a username; if it's obvious who you're talking about from the context of what was written, it still counts.

In that case, it might be a good idea to refresh the forum rules and the guidelines for bans—just so we aren't all guessing in the dark, right? It’d be much better if everything was laid out clearly for everyone to see.

What’s the actual policy when it comes to people intentionally messing with usernames? Honestly, nothing has really addressed my original question yet.
