How many times has someone actually hit on someone else here?

What do you mean "long post"? Look, this whole thing basically kicked off because of what Brandon Lopez6 wrote:
Elizabeth Davis said:If they're seriously getting this worked up about quoting people, they might as well just put it in the official rules. I mean, imagine someone comes in, reads the rules perfectly, quotes the person right above them, and still risks getting banned. 🤣

driftingfox33, my logic is totally sound, and hey, I know how to use the quote function too, so don't even worry about it, girl.

Edit:
I can't stop thinking about this... So, driftingfox33, are you seriously telling me you'd rather try to be faster than everyone else by using the quote tool on something like "What's 2+2?"—just so nobody beats you to the punch—instead of just hitting "Quick reply"? Seriously, grab a stopwatch and let us know how that works out for you! 🤣

It happens to me all the time—someone drops a post right before I can hit send. Sometimes it’s one, sometimes it’s two or three at once! 🤷

Look, I get why this happens—I usually have a bunch of different threads open in various tabs, and it feels like everyone is posting like crazy all at once. That's exactly why I end up quoting the post I'm replying to. I’ve actually had people mistake my response for a reply to some random "ninja post" that wasn't even meant for me! Plus, honestly? It's just way easier to hit quote and address someone directly than to use the Quick post feature and then deal with the headache of editing my post later just to fix the citations and paste everything back in.

At the end of the day, it's much simpler to just skip over the quoted part while reading than it is to click, quote, and edit after the fact. And let's be real—nobody actually reads every single word anyway, right?

Now, I totally agree that quoting massive walls of text just to drop a smiley face or a quick "lol" is super counterproductive and makes the forum harder to read—that's a total mess. But I don't think quoting short little posts is really such a huge crime, is it?

Well, Michelle Alvarez8 pretty much covered it all—thanks, Michelle Alvarez8!

I honestly had no clue that was even an issue... I mean, listening to people get all worked up over someone just dropping a one-liner? Seriously... 😕

Yeah, it's fine. Honestly, it's probably for the best—save me from having to write all that out myself.

Well, here I am. Just another unemployed guy with nothing better to do...

It’s not in the rules because until recently, it wasn't really an issue—at least that’s how it felt to me, since I hadn't noticed much of it...
No, like loneraven25 said—if anyone actually gets banned, it’s only after a mountain of warnings (or if someone keeps quoting posts way above theirs just to reply to a random sentence from a few pages back or some other nonsense 😁).
I can only recall one single ban for quoting, and even then, it was because they were doing that ultra-useless quoting thing and kept repeating themselves right after being warned.
To me, that’s just common sense, so there's no need to spell it out in the rulebook.

I don't know about other forums, but here at MIT, we decided it just doesn't make sense.
On the rare occasion where people jump into a thread (can't think of a single one right now), they end up killing the flow of the conversation, making the whole topic a mess to read through.
Basically, the need to quote the post immediately above yours is infinitely smaller than the need to edit a post because someone "hijacked" the thread.
And since quoting the previous post just kills readability...

Not to mention how much of a disaster that kind of quoting looks on Tapatalk, which a lot of people use to browse MIT.

Look, it goes without saying that you don't go after someone's family, leak their private info, or just drop a post full of nothing but emojis—that's all baked right into the rules. So, why on earth would quoting be more logical than anything else I've brought up? And if it's so great, why hasn't it been added to the official rulebook yet?

It doesn't say you can't curse at your mom, dad, brother, or sister... it says don't curse at your family (exaggerating, obviously).
It doesn't explicitly forbid quoting the post right above yours when you aren't even responding to it, or grabbing a post from a totally different thread... it just says don't post in a way that kills readability.

Quoting is allowed somewhere else, but not here—just like I told you.
Back in the day, this stuff wasn't such a huge issue, so now we're stuck dealing with it on a case-by-case basis.

Just think about how often you actually bother to re-read the rules of the subforum you're constantly posting in, and there's your answer as to why it isn't in the official guidelines right now. 🙂

I honestly think adding just one paragraph to the rules would settle this debate once and for all.
So, my take is... 🍿

I check them whenever I see a new thread or if I haven't posted on a specific board in over a year 😁. Honestly, I don't see the connection here. Rules aren't just for the veterans who've been on the forum forever (I mean, I guess you won't be reading them either, then 🤷), they're mostly for the newbies, and there are plenty of those on this site.

Elizabeth Davis said:Is it actually against the rules to quote someone directly above you, and does it carry any kind of penalty?

Look, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with doing that, and you definitely won't get penalized for it. We've gone back and forth on this topic plenty of times before, and honestly, my stance hasn't budged an inch. If anyone has been handed a warning or a strike just for quoting a previous post, please reach out to me directly and I will make sure it gets cleared up. I’m asking the moderators once again to please dial back the overmoderating—just let people use quotes freely unless they start posting massive, unnecessary walls of text.

If someone actually caught a warning because of this, let me know and I'll clear it right up. Seriously though, can the mods please stop overmoderating everything? Just leave people's quotes alone unless they're turning into massive, useless walls of text.

So, basically, the admin team doesn't see any issue at all with what I just did by replying to this post? Interesting...

Fine then, why don't you guys just turn on auto-quote (which has been an option in vBulletin since version 2.5, I'm not even kidding) and let's just have a total quotefest so everyone can be super happy and satisfied. 🤷

Not at all. Honestly, they don't.

Alex Barnes93 said:Well then, maybe you should just turn on the auto-quote feature...

There's really no need for that, if you ask me; I think it's perfectly fine to let everyone decide for themselves whether they want to include a quote in their own posts or not. 🙂

Back on the Economy forum, the 2007 rulebook states this:

Rules for posting:
  • Use "post reply" instead of quoting everyone
  • Don't write in all caps; it’s basically shouting at people.

  • Don't quote the post directly preceding yours.
  • Avoid quoting entire posts—just grab the relevant snippet.
  • Comments consisting only of emojis will likely be deleted.
  • Stay on topic; off-topic ramblings will be wiped. Don't waste your breath.
  • Posts can be removed without warning or explanation if you break the rules.

It’s not that we’re out to hand out bans or delete everything (except those massive walls of quoted text), but we all seem to prefer this flow—keeping things clean by avoiding unnecessary quotes of the previous post.

I think the suggestion makes total sense, but honestly, you guys aren't even handing out penalties for it anyway. 🙂

And honestly, the people on these forums really need to learn that you don't have to quote someone's massive, mile-long essay just to leave a comment that isn't even a single, expanded sentence...

Look, if posts are getting way too long, they can be edited down or shortened—that’s really not the issue here.

Misunderstood, so here’s an example:

quoted post:
Cruces said:The warranty lasts a year, damn them 😠
I guess they set it so the battery lasts exactly one year while under warranty, and then we're just left wondering what to do.
Can I swap the battery myself, or do I have to haul the phone into a repair shop? Because the specs say it's non-removable.

reply:
tomo100brt said:If you can find one somewhere (you'd have to crack it open first to see the battery type), you could swap it. It's not exactly easy since it's glued in and comes out almost last. Better to just take it to a pro because I doubt you'll even find the part lying around.
Check the manual and see if you can handle it yourself.

And I have one question to start things off: how do you do a PrtSc... on this? On the T, it was an option when holding the power button, but there's nothing here?.. Or is there some trick like on an HTC?

reply:
tomo100brt said:I'm not sure what you mean by PrtSc, but I think you're talking about taking a screenshot. There are two ways to do it. The faster way is to hold the volume down and power buttons at the same time. The slower way is to find the Active clip in small apps and use that to snap the photo.

Honestly, I practically drove across the entire country just to track down that phone. It was the only place you could actually find one.

It’s sitting there on the shelf at the store. If you pull the trigger on an order first thing tomorrow morning, you'll have it by the second day—pretty much the same turnaround even if you're living right in the heart of D.C.
You could even just swing by their shop and pick it up in person. I'm pretty sure they're located over at the Importanne Galleria, so if you do that, you should be all set. $167 It’s actually cheaper than at the Sony Center, which honestly isn't nothing.

The result.

Look, we aren't talking about people just quoting paychecks just to say, "Yeah, I agree." This is about a guy on the forum actually giving real advice when someone asks a specific question.

Just to be clear, I don't actually know this user—we've never even spoken. It just caught my eye that he's racked up a ton of warnings on various threads about different Xperia Ts.

It would be pretty interesting to hear the full story from that user mentioned above,
just how many private messages he's actually received telling him to stop tearing these threads apart.
