How to increase DM limits

I honestly think it might be worth looking into bumping up the limit from 10^2 to 10^3 messages, because when you really sit down and crunch the numbers, it feels a little stingy—especially since those sent messages count toward the total too.

It shouldn't put much of a strain on the infrastructure at all, since most of what we're sending is just plain text anyway. I'd bet the mods have basically unlimited capacity so they probably aren't sweating it, but I'd love it if you guys could just give this suggestion a little thought.

You can actually toggle off the setting that tracks how many messages you've sent.

The moderators have a 300-message cap. It’s the same deal over on ROFL too. 🤣

Does anyone know how I can turn that off? If you could help me out, that would be great. 🍿

But yeah, way back when I was lurking more than actually posting on this forum, even as a regular user, my inbox limit was 1,000 messages. And wouldn't you know it—it was running on vBulletin too. 🙂

Knowing Andrew, he’ll probably jump in and give us the green light on this... so by tomorrow, we'll be able to spam each other with endless President messages just because we feel like it. Honestly, we'll do it just out of pure spite since we finally can.

Honestly, there’s another forum out there that’s easily a thousand times better designed than this one, and even a regular user can post up to 1,000 messages without any hassle, so I really don't see why it's such a struggle to implement, because let's be real, this whole site feels pretty obsolete in its current state 😳

Private messages > Edit options > scroll down to Slack > Uncheck "Save a copy of sent messages in my Sent Items folder by default"

Honestly, I’m totally down to walk out and go on strike if it means we can finally get them to bump up our limit... By the way, is it actually true that this sent messages option can be buried deep in the settings? Thanks Pikachu

Probably. Basically, the English description says sent messages won't be saved by default if you uncheck that box, according to what Peter said.

I haven't checked the President's inbox to see if it actually works like that—maybe Peter can clarify if he knows the deal—but based on the text, if you want a record of what you've sent to others, don't touch that setting.

Maybe there's some loophole or a bug where they stay saved but just don't count. If that's the case, then 👍.

Honestly, it feels a little cheap having to toggle an option just to expand your inbox, because I feel like it’s so easy to lose track of what you actually said if someone doesn't quote you, leaving you basically just guessing at your own words sometimes.

I’m sending and receiving about 20 messages every single day, just so I can realize some of them aren't actually hitting my inbox because it's completely maxed out. This is honestly pathetic; I hit my hundred-message limit before you can even finish saying "cookies."

How many messages would you guys personally send?

I’m pretty active on this business forum I frequent, but they have this strict cap of 1,000 posts, and let me tell you, it fills up incredibly fast. Honestly, if we could just get a limit of at least 500 here, and maybe have the mods scrap the restrictions entirely—meaning 500 for both incoming and outgoing posts—it would be much better. What do you guys think? 🤷

What exactly do you mean by "unrealistic"? You’re claiming 200 is a reasonable limit while 500 is somehow out of reach? Honestly, that distinction is completely meaningless to me—whether it's 200 or 500, the impact is the same. And if the moderator is going to insist on being contrary just for the sake of it, I’d suggest actually explaining the reasoning behind blocking an increase in Slack notifications. Use a full sentence for once. If you don't want more messages, then just turn them off entirely. Why should I have to suffer through these limitations just to accommodate a handful of people who aren't even checking their notifications anyway? I actually need this functionality.

BTW, rustydrifter10: we're looking at maybe 500-1000 posts for regular users, and maybe 2500-5000 for the mods.

Just bumping up those numbers doesn't necessarily mean we'll have to allocate all that extra storage space right away. It's really just a theoretical limit that most people won't even hit, so I guess the extra load on the server or the database would be pretty minimal—especially when you consider how much weight the spam threads actually pull.

Honestly, 1,000 posts isn't actually that much, and I think northerncyclist2 makes a fair point since most people here probably won't even hit that theoretical limit anyway, though it would definitely be helpful for a few of us 🙂

Besides, we're just talking about text, so I really don't see how that could possibly put any significant strain on the servers
