A friend just pinged me saying she picked up some "police" virus from the forums
Hopefully she can get it sorted out using Malwarebytes

Don't try pulling that stunt on my computer. Consider this your only warning.

Hopefully Malwarebytes can clean it up.

Yeah, probably. There are a few ways to scrub that crap off your system if you look online.

The bigger issue is that they're running ads that don't undergo any real vetting—as long as they're pulling in ad revenue, they don't seem to care if people end up downloading some Trojan or virus 🙄

It's probably a good thing that tools like AdBlock exist...

George Sanders37 said:The real headache is those ads that fly right under the radar because they don't pass any actual vetting—it's all about padding that ad revenue, regardless of whether people end up downloading some nasty Trojan or malware 🙄

Honestly, thank God we have things like AdBlock...

I mean, if local PC repair shops start getting mailers sent straight to their homes, there’s even this tiny, slim chance that owners might actually take a look at where their money is coming from—especially when those ads are basically just digital poison...

Following that logic, people would just stop using AdBlock so companies could actually make money from legitimate ads instead of relying on sketchy ones just to scrape by.

I know everyone here thinks it's their fundamental right to have a fast, high-end server for spamming and trolling, but that’s not how the real world works. Especially not in a capitalist system like the one we have here in the States.

Axel, you’re starting to sound like a total blowhard. 😢

Look, people just didn't have AdBlock installed to stop those forum ads from being absolute garbage. There's really no need to twist the argument back to that old "it's either adblock or the ads" debate—we both know you already have the answer to that one, don't you? 😉

I honestly dealt with ads for a really long time, you know? But then things just got ridiculous—these stupid pop-ups started appearing constantly, covering up half the page every single time I tried to click on something. And once the viruses started cropping up... yeah, that was it for me. I had to say enough is enough. To be honest, Reddit was actually the very first site that pushed me to finally install AdBlock; I’d never even bothered using it anywhere else before that. So, yeah, that's just how civilized the advertising is over here.

Are you trolling him? 😁

I didn't bother using AdBlock until this forum started spewing Trojans out of its own ads like crazy. I’m not about to go buying some random piece of junk because someone is too incompetent to maintain a site properly. I have zero interest in begging someone to fix my gear or throwing money away at a repair shop because of their mess.

Regarding what you said, all I can do is quote every single post written after this and bow down to each one individually...

People only used AdBlock because forum ads were being garbage. No need to twist the argument into a "what happened before" story about adblock vs. ads. We both know you already have the answer to that. 😉

I didn't even have AdBlock installed before this forum started spitting out Trojans like crazy from the ads. I'm not about to go out and buy some new piece of junk just because someone incompetent can't manage the site properly... then having to beg someone to fix it or lugging it to a repair shop just to throw money down the drain.

I’ve been online pretty much every day since 2007—well, more consistently than before—and I’ve wandered through plenty of corners of the web. But I didn't touch AdBlock until people on this forum told me I had to because the ads were getting progressively more obnoxious by the day. I never really noticed them on other sites, so they weren't a huge deal to me, and I haven't heard of anyone catching a virus from an ad anywhere else besides right here. 😬

You really have to love the irony of it all.

The whole site runs on ad revenue—yet we've got users and mods telling each other to download software specifically designed to block those very ads. 😁

Maybe now we’re seeing computer repair shops funding the forum just so they can scrub away all the junk posted by users who actually make the site money?

If people didn't have AdBlock, these forum ads wouldn't be such a mess. There's no need to twist the argument back to "it was either this or that." We both know you already have the answer to that question. 😉

I'm not selling anything; I'm just saying certain things are linked. I still think a subscription model might be the best way forward, though I'm far from being certain about it.

Since the admin Q&A thread is locked—and since it’s been 48 hours without any response to my previous post—I figured I’d just rephrase things here rather than starting an entirely new thread about the same issue.

What steps are being taken to protect users from malicious software delivered through unvetted ads? I’m not talking about what we can do ourselves—like using AdBlock or other tools we've already discussed—but rather the responsibility of the site admins and the owners regarding technical safeguards and oversight.

Look, as admins, our role here is really just to flag these kinds of issues to the tech team and the owners, and then we have to leave it in their hands. We’ve done our part by reporting it, but beyond that, we just don't have the authority or the tools to step in and fix it ourselves.

Alright, thanks for letting the right people know.

Is there any way we could get some feedback on what you heard—or what you're expecting to hear—or is that all considered proprietary? 🤷 I’m just asking because I'm not entirely sure how things work on your end.

I promise I’ll post an update the second we get any feedback, but honestly, sometimes it’s just so vague or incomplete that there isn't much to actually report. As soon as I have some real clarity, you'll be the first to know. If you haven't heard anything from my end, it's probably because I'm still sitting here in the dark just like everyone else!
