Best waterproof cameras?

Alright, here’s the deal: I’ve got this webcam http://www.canyon-tech.com/products/...r-switcher.Now I'm thinking about mounting it outside a window to monitor the entrance of my building. Can it actually handle the weather? You know, rain and all that? And if some moisture leaks in, am I looking at a fried PC?

It’s pretty unlikely you’ll actually fry your entire computer, but there is a slight chance you could burn out a USB port. Most likely, if it starts raining, you’ll just end up losing the camera itself rather than the whole system. 😉
By the way, if you're actually looking for a camera for a surveillance setup, you can usually snag one for a bargain on eBay or just pick one up at a local big-box store like Walmart!

Maybe look around to see if there’s an existing housing for that camera or something similar. You could probably improvise a custom case yourself—have a local glass shop cut the pane, seal it up to keep the moisture out, and you might be able to avoid any future headaches.

A hardware failure is actually quite inevitable if the camera lacks waterproof ratings, as moisture will rapidly bridge the data lines and the 5V power supply to the ground, potentially damaging the motherboard's USB drivers or the power supply unit itself 😉. I would strongly suggest purchasing a waterproof model or placing the current one inside an appropriate protective housing (@brightviper13/">@@brightviper13 👍).

Also, is there any chance of frying the USB port if I plug the camera into a USB extension cable first before connecting it to my PC?

Look, standard webcams are built for indoor use—period. Aside from just needing to handle a bit of rain, you really have to account for the cold. If temperatures drop too low, the hardware is basically going to give up the ghost. You’d need something with internal heating built into the housing just to keep the components alive and—more importantly—to stop the lens from fogging up constantly.
