Elizabeth Sanders24 said:So you're saying these tests won't reveal if there's an underlying predisposition for thrombophilia?
I think I'll head over to Cleveland, I'm from California.

That isn't what I said. I was simply explaining what the blood draw is actually intended to accomplish.
Your doctor surely explained the situation to you.

Elizabeth Fowler46 said:Female, 19.5 years old, diagnosed with PCOS. These labs were done before starting birth control pills. Can someone please tell me if there are any contraindications for taking them and maybe comment on these results in general? Should I be worried about these low values and such?
Thanks in advance. πŸ™‚

The results look normal; you could perhaps repeat the CBC just to be safe.

slyfalcon20 said:Is it okay to have a little water before I go in to get my AST, ALT, GGT, ALP, and Bilirubin checked? How much does water affect the results?

You can eat and drink.
Fasting is only required for glucose, iron, and lipid panelsβ€”basically standard biochemistry.
For the rest, it's not necessary, even though at the lab they might ask if you've fasted for a KCC panel. I've experienced that personally, but there really is no reason for it.

I’m still going to see a urologist to figure out why I'm peeing so frequently. I finished a week of Cephalexin and I've been drinking cranberry tea since. My doctor mentioned it might just be a minor UTI, but he said it's outside his area of expertise.

Honestly, if a doctor doesn't know how to handle a basic UTI, they should probably quit general practice altogether and go find some mindless job in epidemiology or something equally useless.
If your urinalysis comes back clean, you don't have an infectionβ€”period. But that doesn't mean there isn't something else causing this constant urge to pee, like a neurogenic bladder, DM, or other issues.
In my opinion, a urologist probably won't have much more to offer you if the tests are clear.

There isn't a whole lot of context here to go on. When did this actually start? Was it a sudden thing or just a slow creep of symptoms? Is the volume per trip normal, or are you going more or less than usual? Are you getting woken up at night needing to go? Is the stream steady or does it cut in and out? Do you get that annoying feeling like your bladder isn't quite empty after you're done? Any burning sensation? Did you notice ANY actual improvement after taking the Cephalexin? And how many days had passed since you finished the Cephalexin before you ran this urine test? Also, was there any unprotected sex (no condom) a few days before this all kicked off? Maybe caught a chill? If you press down right above your pubic bone, does it trigger an urge to pee? Has anyone done a prostate exam (DRE) yet? Have you had swabs taken from the urethra for Chlamydia, U. urealyitcum, or M. hominis? Any history of kidney stones? Did you run a fever along with all this? What were the specific symptoms or tests that led the doctor to prescribe the Cephalexin in the first place?
Plus, you've gotta consider all those other potential culprits that vividsailor7 mentioned.
DM-diabetes mellitus
By the way, usually, a primary care physician handles all this stuff, and they only really call in a specialist if they can't sort it out themselves.

Just got my lab results back today:

WBC counts at 2-3
Epithelial cells at 20-30
Some rare bacteria present
A fair amount of mucus

Everything else on the panel looks perfectly fine.

My doctor isn't even available to see me until Fridayβ€”typical. Does anyone have any idea just how "nasty" these numbers actually look?

Hello!

Could someone please help me make sense of these urinalysis results?
The nurse at the clinic told me the results weren't bad when I asked if everything was okay... but then she said they were fine "by their standards," which just left me feeling totally confused.πŸ˜•
By whose standards, though? The lab technicians who processed the samples?

Proteins neg. units 0-3 ref. intervals 0
Blood 0-3 ref. intervals 0
Glucose 0-3 ref. intervals 0
Methylketones 0-3 ref. intervals 0
Urobilinogen 0-3 ref. intervals 1
Bilirubin 0-3 ref. intervals 0
Nitrites 0-3 ref. intervals 0
Leukocytes 0-3 ref. intervals 0

SEDIMENT 4-6 leukocytes
1-3 Erythrocytes
slight mucus
rare bacteria

If the reference intervals are listed as 0, then what on earth does "0-3" actually mean?! And what about this "1" for urobilinogen?

And what about the presence of leukocytes and erythrocytes in my urine?

I'm 35 years old, and I had this test done because I've been feeling this weird discomfort in my bladderβ€”especially when it's full. It's like this dull ache that isn't quite pain, plus a slight stinging sensation when I go to the bathroom.

I'm hoping for a quick response. Thanks so much in advance.

Hey, I could really use some help reading my blood work.
Everything looks normal except for a few things here:

WBC 3.1 (3.4 - 9.7)
MCHC 355 (320 - 345)
MPV 5.8 (6.8 - 10.4)
Neutrophils % 41.6 (44 - 72)
Monocytes 15.4 (2 - 12)
Neutrophils 1.29 (2.06 - 6.49)
Immature Neutrophils % 6 (0 - 2)
Segmented Neutrophils % 36 (44 - 72)
Monocytes % 14 (2 - 12)
Plasma cells % 1 (0 - 0)
Atypical lymphocytes 4 (0 - 0)
Glucose 4 (4.2 - 6)
Urate 435 (182 - 403)

Is there any reason to worry? I mean, I had a bit of food poisoning a couple days before the drawβ€”mostly just stomach cramps and diarrhea.
Thanks so much!

Hi there.
Here are my S-OGTT results:
Glucose 0' 4.2 mmol/L Ketones 0' neg Neg
Acetoacetate 0' neg Neg

Glucose 120' 2.8 mmol/L Ketones 120' neg Neg
Acetoacetate 120' Neg Neg

I know everything is within range, but I guess I'm wondering if it's actually normal for sugar to drop that low after two hours? That looks like hypoglycemia to me. What could be causing this? Should I go see an endocrinologist or some other specialist?

Also, because my iron levels were high (44, ref.int. 8-30), my hematologist sent me to get tested for hemochromatosis.
Results:
DNA analysis confirmed a heterozygote for the H63D mutation (genotype HD)

After cutting out the few foods that actually contain high iron, here are the blood counts:

Iron 29.1mmol/L (8-30)
UIBC 23.3 mmol/L (26-59)
TIBC 52.3 mmol/L (49-75)
Fe saturation 55.6 % (15-50)

Ferritin 76 ng/mL (5-148)

CBC - everything is within the standard reference intervals, except:

MCV 100.4 fL (83-97.2)
MCH 35.2 pg (27.4-33.9)
MCHC 350 g/L (320-345)
Reticulocytes 3.4 /10^3Erc (5-21.6)
Reticulocytes 14.0 x10^9/L (19-109)

CMP - all within reference intervals

Serum protein electrophoresis - all within ref.int.

ESR 3 mm/3.6ks (4-24)

Vitamin B12 and folic acid - within ref.int.

IgG and IgA within ref.int.
IgM 2.83 g/L (0.4 - 2.3)

Protein immunofixation - normal result.

I know this is a lot, but does any of this mean anything to you? I've never had this many values outside the normal range before, and maybe I'm just panicking a bit.

Are there any other tests I should consider doing? I have a follow-up appointment with the hematologist next week to review all of this, but I feel like they're already making light of the situation, so I want to be prepared.

Thanks.

Female, 30 years old. Shortness of breath, tachycardia, broken capillaries, a lump behind the ear, chronic headaches, nausea.

Blood smear results:
Blasts, promyelocytes, myelocytes, metamyelocytes, erythroblasts, plasma cells: 0
Non-seg. granulocytes: 0
Seg. neutrophilic granulocytes: (bolded) 59 ref (0.54-0.62)
Eosinophilic granulocytes: 1 (0.01-0.05)
Basophils: 0
Lymphocytes: 35 (0.25-0.33)
Monocytes: 5 (0.00-0.01)

I think this is an acid-base status, but I’m not entirely sure since the test name isn't listed anywhere:

#pH: 7.47
pCO2: 4.8kPa
!pO2: 8.7kPa
Na+: 141 mmol
Ca++: 1.16
Glu: 4.4
Lac: 1.6
Hct: 37

Ca++(7.4): 1.18 mmol
HCO3-: 25.0
HCO3std: 25.8
TCO2: 26.1
BE efc: 1.0
BE(B): 1.2
#SO2c: 93%
#THbc: 115 g/l
(! Outside critical limit, #outside ref range)

Can someone please explain what these results actually mean?πŸ™‚

KCC is normal.
Ketones found in urine (2+) and specific gravity 1.010 (everything else was fine).
EKG - normal.
Chest X-ray - normal.

Skin biopsy (healthy skin): individual granular IgM deposits along the epidermal border.
Psoriasis wasn't confirmed by elbow biopsy due to more pronounced spongiosis.

Thanks.πŸ™‚πŸ™‚

We’re getting ready to welcome another little one, so I decided to go ahead and get some swabs done. Everything came back clear, except for one detail on the lab reportβ€”it lists a cervical swabβ€”under the microbiological screening section, there's a microscopic preparation note: it shows 0-4 polymorphonuclear leukocytes per large field. My gynecologist is currently out of the office, so I was wondering if anyone could help me make sense of this? Thanks!
