Just got my latest blood work back:

25-hydroxy vitamin D: 11 nmol/L > 75 CMIA Abbott

My Vitamin D is sitting at 11, while the normal range starts at 75. What does this even mean and how do I fix it?

I would be so grateful if Nicholas Myers could lend me some insight here
Greetings,
I am reaching out because I find myself in need of some expert guidance regarding my recent health readings.
Can it be said with any degree of certainty that I am dealing with Polycythemia vera?
Here is the breakdown of my laboratory results for women:
Erythropoiesis came in at 5.91, which is slightly elevated compared to the 5.08 threshold.
My Hemoglobin is sitting at 165, whereas the upper limit is 157.
Hematocrit is at 0.500, while the range goes up to 0.470.
Platelets are at 356 against a range of 424, so those are perfectly fine.
All my other CBC parameters look quite standard.
The lipid profile is within the normal range.
LDH is 156 compared to a limit of 241, which is normal.
EPO is 6, with the lower bound being 4.
JAK2(V617F) tested negative.
The JAK 2 (exon 12) mutation test via blood was negative.
The CALR mutation test via blood was also negative.

My spleen appears to be completely normal.

Vitamin D supplements. Your primary care physician can write you a prescription...

So, I have a 20-year-old son—bless his heart—with a high B12 level at 707 pmol/L.
Two years ago, he was sitting at 650 pmol/L.
His folate levels are normal, and his thyroid hormones look fine too.
He isn't taking any supplements right now—though he was a few years back.
The kid feels completely fine, no symptoms at all.
But Dr. Google is out here making everything sound terrifying...
Has anyone else dealt with elevated B12 before?

Hey everyone, I have a quick question...

Does anyone happen to know how long a white referral for lab work—specifically for things like a CBC, urinalysis, and glucose—remains valid? I just picked it up from my primary care physician yesterday, but my occupational health screening isn't scheduled until March 28th. On one hand, I'm worried that if I head to the lab today or tomorrow, the occupational health specialist might reject the results because they’re "too old" by the time my appointment rolls around. On the other hand, I'm concerned that if I wait ten days to go to the lab, this specific referral might expire. Am I just overthinking this?

From what I know, that referral should be good for about a month.

Thanks for the help, everyone.

I was also wondering, what would be considered an "abnormal" lab result?

Hey everyone, I was wondering if someone could help me make sense of these lab results.
I’ve been getting some extra testing done because my platelet count keeps hovering right near the upper limit.
It’s just been bugging me—my total platelet count is pushing that top end, while everything else seems to be sitting at the bottom of the range, or even slightly low.
Thanks in advance!

I went in for HLA typing because we were looking at possible psoriatic arthritis—specifically due to some swelling in my fingers. There’s also a history of autoimmune issues in the family; my sister has MS, and several other relatives deal with diabetes.

I see some of the antigens listed suggest I’m a carrier for certain genes, but I'm struggling to gauge how much weight to give that. How "strong" is this link, really? If anyone here has experience interpreting these types of lab results, I’d truly appreciate your insight. 🙂

To whom it may concern,

Looking at these MHC typing results, the main red flags are the risks for psoriasis and multiple sclerosis. Specifically, you have HLA-Cw6. According to the literature, this marker significantly spikes the risk for psoriasis—up to 16 times higher for Type 1 vulgaris and as much as 33 times for the guttate variety. Type 1 vulgaris typically hits before age 40 and tends to be more aggressive, often involving widespread skin changes across the body. Common triggers include stress or infections, particularly strep throat. Weight is another factor to consider here; obesity acts as a multiplier. If someone carries HLA-Cw6 and is overweight, their risk of developing psoriasis jumps to 35 times that of an individual with the same genetic marker who maintains a healthy weight.

Unfortunately, there's a genetic predisposition for multiple sclerosis here—specifically involving hla-drb1*15 and hla-dqb1*06. It essentially triples or quadruples the risk compared to someone without those specific HLA haplotypes.

I'm looking for some guidance.
Can I say for certain that I have Polycythemia Vera?
Lab results for women:
Erythrocytes 5.91 (range up to 5.08) increased
Hemoglobin 165 (range up to 157) increased
Hematocrit 0.500 (range up to 0.470) increased
Platelets 356 (range up to 424) normal
Other CBC parameters are fine
Lipid levels are normal
LDH 156 to 241 normal
EPO 6 (lower limit 4)
JAK2(V617F) negative
JAK 2 (exon 12) mutation in blood negative
CALR mutation in blood negative

Spleen is normal

Ma'am,

The data you've provided doesn't necessarily point toward Polycythemia Vera; however, one cannot rule the disease out based solely on these figures. Your attending hematologist will need to determine if there is a clinical indication for a bone marrow biopsy.

We're looking at values right at the upper limit of normal. Nothing alarming here, though follow-up is likely needed. Once you cross 800—especially if you hit 1000—that's when the conversation changes significantly.

I’m running some tests because my platelet count is hovering near the upper limit.
It’s bothering me—the total platelets are pushing the ceiling, while everything else is sitting at the floor, some even looking a bit low.
Thanks in advance.

The labs look fine. I see no reason for concern here. There isn't some universal rule stating that every single blood marker needs to be equidistant from the median. Not sure where you picked up that idea.

Hello,

For the last six months, I’ve been dealing with these health issues. To be more precise, I think it all started somewhere around April of last year. I had these bouts of dizziness occasionally—maybe when standing up or just moving around, I can't say for sure... and my left leg would ache sometimes, from the back of the knee down towards the foot. Those symptoms still pop up every now and then, along with the vertigo.

Then in November, everything hit at once: sudden anemia caused by iron deficiency, high cholesterol, and high triglycerides (which I’ve never struggled with before), plus rapid weight loss. We actually suspect I lost mostly subcutaneous fat. After that, infectious disease tests came back positive for EBV and CMV... (we aren't sure if it was a reactivation or a first-time infection). My doctor mentioned that EBV might cause the loss of subcutaneous tissue and that sudden drop in weight (about 13 lbs in three weeks).
I'm also seeing dry, scaly skin on my knees and over my heel, soft nails with longitudinal ridges, arthralgia/crepitus sounds in my knees, occasional bone pain (though it's always in the same spot, my upper arms), and lately, some tingling in my left fingers. I also think my tongue looks slightly enlarged; you can see the tooth indentations on the front and sides where it fills the gaps from two missing teeth. I've been reading all sorts of things online about myelomas and amyloidosis, and honestly, the panic is starting to set in.

I’ve seen a gastroenterologist, an endocrinologist, an immunologist, and several other internists. We’ve run just about every test imaginable: CBC is normal except for low hemoglobin and hematocrit; initially, it looked like microcytic anemia (likely due to donating blood three weeks before the first results), but now it's appearing normocytic. Three abdominal ultrasounds were clear, TSH, T3, and T4 are fine, all hormones are okay... colonoscopy was clear, endoscopy was clear, CT scans of the abdomen and chest were all okay, and all ANA/ENA and RF markers are normal.

Just waiting on an MRI of the small intestine now. An echocardiogram was also fine.
I saw a private immunologist who basically told me I was making up symptoms and claimed I have IBD. He's treating me with Mesalamine without any actual evidence of IBD, Crohn's, or any small bowel issues. My calprotectin levels are normal too...

Here are the electrophoresis results from a month ago and the latest CBC after a month of iron supplements—specifically KENDURAL C. Note that I stopped taking the iron two days before the blood draw. My question is: can iron supplements create a false blood picture, where all the parameters look good but the anemia persists? Also, how much of an impact can lipemia have on protein electrophoresis? Thanks.
