Jesse Sanchez4, I have to be honest, I’m having a hard time following your logic here at all
Is this forum actually going to hand over your username and registered address, or maybe even your AOL Instant Messenger info?
Because in my experience, when people reach out to me on Skype, they just show up using their actual Skype handle

I have to admit, I’m totally lost here. The last time I even touched AOL Instant Messenger was back in 2002, so anything is possible at this point.
BTW, does anyone actually still use AOL Instant Messenger? 😕🤷

In my experience, when people try to reach out via Skype, their handle is right there on the screen for everyone to see.

They get your username and the email you used to register. It’s like a digital paper trail; I actually dug through my browser history to find the specific URL the site uses to redirect you, so I’ll paste it here—though I'll break it up slightly so the system doesn't turn it into a clickable link automatically:

http://www . icq . com/people/webmsg.php
?to=RECEIVER_ID&from=MY_USERNAME&fromemail=MY_EMAIL_ADDRESS

goldengull3 has an ICQ icon on his profile, so you could always try reaching out to him that way.

Sure, you could try suing Mark Zuckerberg or Facebook for the exact same thing. Give it a shot. 😁

If I remember correctly, all of this is already covered in the Terms of Service and the License Agreement (vBulletin). It’s all laid out right when you sign up.

I think this was already settled in that locked thread; it isn't really the forum's responsibility.

It’s not about what people write in posts or private messages, but rather within the user profile itself—you even took a perfect screenshot of it. Whoever enables the digital business card will have it show up as a download option under 'contact information' in their profile.

👍

Everything seems to be sorted out (people can always just write, "Check my profile/contact info, my email is in my vCard" in their posts), so feel free to lock this before it turns into another one of those endless loops.

That feature is disabled by default. As you can see, access is restricted solely to registered users, much like how we handle sharing email addresses via private message.

We have no intention of changing the policy regarding the public disclosure of email addresses; this standard is consistent with most other major forums out there.

Paul Green31 said:And I should probably correct goldengull3 on one specific point.

Corporate email addresses aren't considered private data, regardless of how they're formatted. That said, I agree that we should stick to general info here on the forum, even if an address like contact@exxonmobil.com isn't technically private.

They might not be private, but they still qualify as personal information the moment you can identify the individual behind them.

All those endless lawsuits actually forced Facebook to step up their data security. Back in the day, you couldn't even close your profile at all. Now? You can, thanks to all the legal heat.

And trust me, more are coming.

If I recall correctly, everything was covered under the Terms of Service and the License Agreement (vBulletin). Right there during registration.

I doubt they missed anything when building this forum app. It's not like some random construction warehouse built this. This stuff was developed in the USA, where one group of lawyers is just waiting to pounce on any mistake, and another group works overtime to make sure those mistakes never happen.

@goldengull3
I’m with you. That’s why we shouldn't be writing them.

Everything's sorted out (and hey, just a heads up, it's totally fine to say: "Check my profile/contact info, my email is right there in my vCard"), so feel free to lock this thread (I really don't want this turning into a repeat of that last mess).

This whole thread is actually a perfect example of how you can reach a solution if people just bring some constructive energy to the table and show an actual willingness to cooperate for once
unfortunately, though, the endless back-and-forth about searching for the key and all the excuses for why they can't find it is just telling that other, much uglier story we all know too well

unfortunately, the whole obsession with finding a scapegoat and the reasons behind it just tells the other, much uglier side of the story

So, am I part of that ugly story now?

It doesn't matter—of course I'm not, since my humble self always approaches problems constructively, and I think we've all learned something here, which also serves as an apology for that whole business of asking for one. Just one more thing (an epilogue to this thread, and no response is required), if you'll permit me. Having vCards on Reddit could be a fantastic feature. For instance, Vojky is, without any shadow of a doubt, one of the most constructive users on this site (at least regarding legal or technical advice, and I'm not being sarcastic here—I rarely offer praise, but I always enjoy dropping by his threads), but who can say for certain that he's actually a lawyer? (and this isn't just about him, it applies to my humble self or anyone else on Reddit representing a specific profession). The reality is that we are all just anonymous users here (including the admins, supermoderators, and moderators), and I honestly feel it's wrong when a (super)moderator shuts down a discussion by saying: "You've received an answer from a professional (Vojky). We're done here." (that's completely unrelated to this specific thread, which was locked for good reason due to people acting like extremists on both sides). 😁

Anyway, I'm off to explain to Tyndall why absolutely nothing was actually resolved in the "Censored Pages" thread. 😬
