Hey everyone, quick yes/no question for you guys. Is a 23'' Full HD 16:9 monitor just too short? I’m looking at picking up this one Dell UltraSharp with an IPS panel—well, it's got that 16:9 aspect ratio—but honestly, the whole widescreen thing is kind of bugging me... I'm worried it'll feel awkward to use.

It might feel a little weird at first, but honestly, you'll get used to it pretty fast. 🙂

Maybe take a look at this Apple model instead.

Look, there isn't much of a selection when you're hunting for a 16:10 aspect ratio, and honestly, I'm not even sure if Full HD setups even support that ratio properly...

Yeah, that's what I figured. Thanks for clearing that up!

@Joshua Garcia3/">@@Joshua Garcia3 - It's just way too much money. Honestly, dropping $1,400 on a Samsung—even the one I had my heart set on—is already kind of a massive stretch for me :/

About a year and a half ago, I picked up a 23-inch Apple 1920 x 1080 (16:9) monitor, but I always felt like I was lacking vertical space. I used to use a 1600 x 1200 setup, and that’s what I’m stuck using at my job too.
After doing some actual digging on the forums, I saw people recommending 1920 x 1200 (16:10 aspect ratio) for work, which is supposedly way better. It's a shame because they're pretty hard to find now. I guess most people just assume everything is the same, and honestly, it's probably easier for manufacturers to cut 16:9 panels since they get more out of the glass.
I ended up grabbing an IIYAMA E2607WS (26-inch), which I left for the kids, and I'm more than happy with it. It uses CCFL instead of LED, but it only pulls about 50W max, and I have the backlight set to 65%. The built-in speakers are actually decent, too.
In a word? Perfect. I might actually regret it if I can't find a 16:10 monitor in a few years.

It’s hardly anyone's fault that the selection of 16:10 monitors here in the States is so limited, which leads retailers to just push 16:9 displays at 1920x1080 resolution like they're some kind of mindless drones.😁 Nothing really fits quite right in this market anyway, so what’s the big deal regarding the aspect ratio? For instance, a 24-inch monitor running at 1920x1200 is perfectly fine, and frankly, I don't care what the resolution is as long as it isn't one of those forced, standardized 1920x1080 setups.☕

A lot of people find 16:9 monitors frustrating, and I'm certainly one of them, mostly because the vertical space feels far too cramped; an LCD shouldn't be designed solely for binge-watching movies or series.😁 Besides, I haven't heard of anyone dropping dead over their first plum just because they watched a movie in Full HD on a 16:10 monitor, so I doubt it's going to be an issue.😉🍿

Which specific Samsung model are you talking about? 🙂

Dell UltraSharp. Honestly, it’s probably the cheapest IPS panel you can find in the States—at least from what I’ve seen while scouring the web. I’m kind of strapped for cash right now, so I can't really justify dropping more money on a fancy setup, but man, I am really leaning towards getting an IPS. I did see some reviews complaining about ghosting issues, and a few people mentioned backlight bleeding or how the stand doesn't tilt much, but... I don't know, those details don't really bother me that much.
And I'm just hoping the 16:9 aspect ratio won't be a total dealbreaker for me, but like I said, there isn't much of a choice here—especially when you're looking for a 16:10 aspect ratio 😢

I’m a 16:10 fan too, but man, when those monitors aren't around... my old Dell 20" 1680x1050 still gets the job done just fine, but even thinking about the day I actually have to replace it gives me a headache.
