Installing Windows

Hi everyone,
I just picked up a new computer. Is installing Windows a complicated process, and where would be the best place to learn how to do it? I use my PC for quite a bit of work, but I've never actually tried this myself. Thanks to anyone who can take a moment to offer some solid advice.

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. Dealing with the BIOS feels a bit intimidating for my first time—I'm worried about messing something up. I guess I just need to take the plunge.

I’ve actually never pulled the trigger on installing Windows myself, so I’m genuinely curious about the experience
Who knows, maybe one day I'll finally find the nerve to try it

I’d suggest installing Windows Vista Ultimate, though honestly, Windows 7 is a massive step up from Vista—provided you get the full version.

Thanks for the help, everyone. I've got Windows 7 Ultimate installed, but now I’m basically starting from scratch since there are so many differences. On that note, I wanted to reply to a specific message. I tried hitting "reply," but I just got an error saying the address couldn't be found, along with a link to the user list. How am I supposed to respond if I can't find the right thread? This has happened to me on the forum before.

It’s highly probable my Windows installation just crashed, and I currently have the installer sitting on a USB drive... does anyone know the proper way to boot from it? I'm working with an old Toshiba Satellite L750 laptop.

It’ll work—it doesn't really matter if you just ran an update or not, you still have to activate Windows one way or another.

Then what is even the point of deleting that update?

That update isn't even a thing anymore—you're basically replying to a post from a year and a half ago.

I was wondering about something regarding a Windows 7 installation. If I have two partitions on my hard drive and I pick the smaller one—maybe around 20 GB—to host the OS, will the data on that second partition stay safe? Or am I going to lose everything there too?

It won't work unless you actually go in there and mark it, then format the "D" drive, for example...

Honestly, 20GB isn't much. Once you start installing all those mandatory background apps and bloatware that always seem to hitch a ride on your system, you’ll burn through that space before you know it. What's the plan then? Maybe try shrinking another partition by at least 10GB if you can.
During a Windows installation, the other partitions shouldn't be touched.
