Proposal for a new "Current Events" subforum

What do you guys think about starting a new sub-forum dedicated to breaking news and current events? Something like

- a massive storm hitting San Francisco
- a murder right in the heart of Washington, D.C.
- a ferry sinking offshore
- the arrest of Jane Lynch, Joe Biden, Eric Adams, Harvey Weinstein, and another 85 people

These kinds of topics don't really fit under politics, and having one central spot to track everything happening in real-time would be great. Users could share whatever they've read or heard, and maybe even get firsthand accounts from people actually on the scene who know way more than the news reporters do.

Well... to be perfectly honest, I don't think it's necessary. We already have perfectly adequate sub-forums designated for those kinds of contributions.

Personally, I find the idea quite excellent—it would be much more efficient to have such breaking news consolidated in a single location. I am honestly unsure which existing sub-forums could adequately house the examples mentioned here.

I don't really care either way—but honestly, I don't think we need it. Everything gets posted on the Forum immediately anyway, and you can always find the right PDF eventually.

The reason I'm even bringing this up isn't about that, though. I just noticed the new PDF scheme, and frankly, it bugs me that NASCAR has its own PDF while basketball doesn't.

Everything is so cramped on the OS right now, and I can already think of 20 great threads that'll blow up once the basketball crowd here notices this...🙏

Seriously, just bring in the Basketball PDF. 😍

I mean, if NASCAR can have a dedicated file for races that only happen like 18 days out of the entire year, then surely basketball can too. We've got 5 or 6 major competitions that matter to us, plus the Euros and the World Cup—and most importantly: we actually have a core group of people on this Forum. 😁

it’s been there...

same old story—begging, pleading, asking nicely... and when the sub-forum finally arrived, it was a total disaster, with nothing more than two or three threads
going anywhere.

It’s not a bad idea, I guess, but it really comes down to how people would actually react to it.
Sometimes you see threads like this popping up on Reddit, and they usually get a pretty good reception over there...

Personally, I find the whole concept to be a fundamentally flawed idea. In my view, the only way this works is if we strictly define a window of relevance for every topic, ensuring that outdated news doesn't suddenly resurface just because someone decided to chime in long after the fact. 😁

So, I was just listening to the radio and heard some crazy story about a boater getting swept away in the Grand Canyon by a massive gust of wind.
I’m trying to figure out exactly where this happened and who the poor guy was.
I've been Googling like crazy, but I'm coming up empty.
Surely someone on this Forum knows the details—any idea which sub-forum I should be asking this in?

There’s really no need to move them; once a topic loses its steam, the mods should just lock it. (For instance, if a dangerous lunatic escapes from an asylum—once they catch him, the thread gets locked.)

Here’s another example:
Back when General Reggie Miller was running wild through Appalachia, or during the manhunt for him and while Ivana Hodak was being hunted, those threads stayed in Politics even though, let's be honest, that isn't actually politics.

If someone thinks those kinds of events have political undertones, then sure, go ahead and start a thread in Politics where people can debate it for days, but breaking news deserves its own dedicated sub-forum.
If someone isn't interested, they won't read it, but I bet that specific sub-forum would be incredibly active and highly read—honestly, most people would probably head straight there instead of checking the nightly news.

Look, this Forum isn't some big-shot news outlet. Honestly, I think a Forum is actually better for staying informed because you get to see the truth from every single angle. Every time I hear some random headline, I immediately head straight to the Forum to see what's really going on, mostly because I don't trust mainstream journalists as far as I can throw them.
Also, people shouldn't be locking threads. As long as something is trending or relevant, people are gonna talk about it, and once the hype dies down, the thread will just sink on its own. You should be able to bump an old thread if there's a legit reason, but if someone's just bumping stuff for no reason? Yeah, they deserve a ban.

I'm down. This idea actually isn't half bad, and a subforum like this could totally take off.

Honestly, I bet it would get slammed with traffic.

It’d basically be like having our own little news outlet right here... just with us users acting as the editors and commentators.

Whatever, we might as well give it a shot. Nothing to lose, right? 👍
