I really hope this project actually gets made, even if the trailer makes the plot look a little silly—just a bunch of freaks brawling in some underground scene. I'm crossing my fingers that they manage to weave in a few original MK stories into this modern take, though it looks like the rivalry between Sub-Zero and Scorpion will play out exactly how we saw in the trailer. 😁
And obviously, let's hope they don't skimp on the fatalities by giving us some watered-down PG-13 treatment!

We're all rooting for that!! Honestly, if they include the Mortal Kombat theme song, I'll be in heaven. 😁

It sounds perfectly fine—though his comment about not cramming too many characters into the script is noted—and it seems they'll be steering clear of everything shown in the first two installments. That said, having more than just Sonya would be pretty great; maybe Kitana or Mileena?
The second one had some sort of connection to Baraka—who, if I recall correctly, was some kind of monster or skull-faced freak under the mask—and she was also meant to be part of that group. 😂

Gregory Wood41 said:So, here we go again. Mortal Kombat is getting that whole "gritty reboot" treatment. 🙂

Look, just to set the record straight, that video isn't a trailer and there isn't a movie actually in production right now. It was basically just a proof-of-concept short that director Kevin Tancharoen put together to pitch his specific vision for an R-rated Mortal Kombat film to Warner Bros. As of today, the studio hasn't greenlit anything, so we don't actually know if a full-length version will ever happen. Still, if they did pull the trigger, it would be pretty cool to see.

I'm with you on that.
It’s way too early to be hunting for a real trailer, let alone a teaser. We’re looking at a three-year window before this thing even hits theaters. Filming hasn't even kicked off yet.
I'm a massive Mortal Kombat fan, so honestly, no matter how this turns out, I’ll still sit down and watch it. Even if it ends up being hit or miss, it'll be worth my time.

Rebecca Foster said:We’re all holding out hope for this one! Seriously, if they actually throw in the Mortal Kombat theme song, I’ll be in absolute heaven. 😁

Yeah... that theme song is incredible. It fits the vibe of Mortal Kombat perfectly. 😁
Mortal Kombat just wouldn't feel the same without him.

If they actually pull any of this off in the movie, I’ll be more than happy.

He confirmed that fatalities are officially making the cut. His plan is to weave them into the tournament naturally, rather than just forcing them in for shock value. I actually appreciate that approach—it makes sense if you want the story to feel like it has some actual weight behind it.

I’d absolutely have to throw in "Get over here!"—you can't have anything involving Mortal Kombat without that iconic line. It's non-negotiable.

Michael Jai White plays Jax Briggs in the short and he'd definitely be a part of the feature.

Look, I’m just going to say it: Scorpion is the villain, and he’s staying that way. People love to try and spin him into some tragic hero or a misunderstood anti-hero, but let’s be real. At his core, he's driven by vengeance, and that kind of darkness doesn't just evaporate because you give him a little backstory. He’s a bad guy through and through, and trying to force a redemption arc on him feels cheap. It's better if they just lean into the aggression and leave the moral complexity out of it.

I’ve already been hearing whispers that a new Mortal Kombat movie is in the works, and man, I am absolutely stoked about it! 👍

I’ve been a massive fan of the Mortal Kombat games and movies for ages, and honestly, if this turns out even half as good as I hope, it’ll easily land in my top 5 films that I'm most hyped to see between 2011 and 2015.

But hey, I’m a bit confused—some of the posters are throwing out a 2011 release date, yet IMDb 2013 says otherwise... so does anyone actually know when this thing is hitting theaters?

2013.... don't hold your breath on that happening anytime soon.
Regarding those posters claiming they're from 2011, they aren't official... those are just fan-made designs.

Man, both the movie and the game are coming out at the same time.😁

This concept trailer—or whatever you want to call it—is decent, but honestly, I wouldn't want them heading down that path. I want it more serious, sure, but I'm not interested in some grounded, realistic take on Mortal Kombat. I want Goro, "get over here," fireballs, iceballs, Raiden's lightning, brutal fights, decapitations, and everything else that actually defines the MK universe.

I totally get where I'm coming from. Some guy higher up in the thread was talking smack, saying if they made something like the first game today, it would just be straight-up trash. But honestly? I think you’d lose half the damn magic if you went down that route. To me, Mortal Kombat just wouldn't feel like Mortal Kombat without that specific vibe. Trying to force it all into "real life" feels pointless—like, why bother making Reptile a freakish mutation who eats people in the middle of a suburban street? I'd much rather see Outworld. The whole game and the lore were built for a world where this crazy stuff actually makes sense. Dragging it into our reality feels unnecessary and just kills the story. Is it more "realistic"? Sure, maybe. But turning it into a gritty grounded drama isn't Mortal Kombat. It's a whole different genre.

The producer and the director behind this promo basically said the exact same thing.👍

Here’s the breakdown from his interview...

They knocked out that short film in just two days using two RED cameras.

We kicked things off in early April and spent two full months grinding through post-production. Most of the crew basically donated their time to make it happen. All in, we put together the short for about $7,500.

He knew that if he ever wanted a shot at directing a major genre flick, he had to prove he could carry one solo. This is basically his card for a chance AT Making The next Mortal Kombat feature film and IT ’ S his Vision for How He ’ d do IT.
He's got a shot at making the next Mortal Kombat feature film, and it’s his vision for how he’d do it.

Not a single soul at the major studios even realized he was filming that short.

Oren Uziel directed the short. According to IMDb, he's actually got a card for a chance AT Making The next Mortal Kombat feature film and IT ’ S his Vision for How He ’ d do IT over at Warner Bros.

He’s aiming for a flick that strikes a balance between reality and that mystical, superpower vibe. Basically, he compares IT to The way Harry Potter exists in Two Worlds.
It’s like how Harry Potter exists in two different worlds at once.

He confirmed fatalities are definitely happening in his movie. His plan is to weave them into the tournament naturally.

They’d have to include "get over here"—it's a total classic.

White plays Jax Briggs in the short and He ’ d definitely be a part of The feature.

Scorpion is the villain, period. That's not changing.

They only had a four-hour window to nail that massive fight sequence.

Why wait so long for an announcement? I mean, this isn't exactly some massive bombshell we were all sitting on the edge of our seats for... 🤷

Still haven't heard anything new regarding the actual movie, aside from what was posted on Rotten Tomatoes:
The movie is essentially a revamp, and that’s about all we know for sure. Word is it’ll feel similar to the first one, but they’re finally going in the direction they originally intended—which means things are getting pretty dark.

If they stick to the vibe of the original, I think we're in good shape. Honestly, though, hearing that they're leaning into a darker tone than the first one? That's a massive plus in my book.
